Homomentum is back with a bang (photos & live review)

Doriloves Youall and Puppetrator X perform at Homomentum. Photo by Ty Chance. Do not use without permission.

Friday’s re-introduction to Homomentum with its third season opener, Myths & Legends, was quite possibly the best one yet. The stellar lineup surprised and delighted finding new energy in performance artists we’ve seen grace their stage before, as well as creative first timers. It was a fairly lengthy show, and yet I was never bored.

Glitterfruit started the show with an inspirational and beautiful protest song that had emcee Max Voltage in a slightly more serious (dare I say butch?) outfit that transitioned perfectly to the be-maned and sparkly unicorn outfit for the rest of the show. Swagger, the skillful but fun dance and teaching troupe, has reinvented themselves as Compound and were as fashionable and compelling as ever. Felice Shays had a particularly successful comedy routine that eschewed her usual food porn in favor of a more restrained but incredibly hilarious narrative about the rules of polyamoury.

This weekend it’s time to be a Hot Mess as you say goodbye to Doll House and indulge in (Del Shores) Sordid Confessions

Del Shores shares all his 'Sordid Confessions' Sunday at Red Cap

Thursday

Hot mess talent contest – The first week of the up-and-coming local talent competition. Can we beat Tyra in snarkiness or Simon Cowell in cruelty? Well it’s time to find out.

Streateaters, Mishaps, Fucking Lesbian Bitches – Goddamn dyke punk ok?

The Cafeteria – Summer school’s in session so it’ll be all the bad girls and boys in class this week…

Portland Pride 2011 Sunday events

The Dolly Pops perform as part of End of the Rainbow

Oh my god, today is the day! So shake off that 3 day hangover and get your ass to the big Pride ParadeMake it Happen! And check out the earlier route and Waterfront Festival maps in case you’ve forgotten. Gay Standard Time is probably ok but the route is short so don’t miss it! And once you’re done with downtown it ain’t over yet, as there seem to be more Sunday afternoon and nighttime events than ever!

Families of Color Day Out picnic – Sunday is a perfect day for winding down and slowly easing yourself out of Pride weekend. I’ve often gone to informal friend BBQs but people of color might want to consider the larger group gathering in North Portland’s Kenton Park. SO grab the hot dogs and the ribs and show your out of town guests what a NW picnic in the shadow of the big Paul Bunyan statue really means.

7th annual Pride Block Party – Today’s the day when Stark Street really is gay again as Red Cap/Boxes closes down the triangle to outsiders in favor of colorful tents that contain some of the best daytime dancing and performance I’ve seen. Hosted by San Francisco’s Trannyshack momma Heklina, the block party, open mere moments after the parade at 1pm, features performances by the Rose City Sirens, ChiChi and Chonga, and (can it be?) all the Miss Thing winners of 2010.

Portland Pride 2011 Friday events

Legendary sissy bouncers Katey Red (L) with Big Freedia

Full list of Friday night events: https://archive.qpdx.com/events-this-week/2011-06-17/

Get Primped for Pride – A pre-funk where the goal is to get girly before you go out. Sexy beats by RoyGBiv and manicures from Nailed by Ally at the Eclexion Boutique (825 NW Glisan).

T*Party picnic – This family friendly event is actually one of my faves and a perfect mellow beginning to the weekend. Fill your belly with real food before entering the liquid diet phase amongst trans family and allies. There’s nothing cuter than little kiddos in drag, trust me.

Poison Waters & friends Happy Hour show – Another earlier in the day events means you can cram even more Pride into your Friday as legendary drag diva Poison Waters presents sequins, rhinestone’s, feathers and heels and laughs.

Q Center Concert series Pride edition “Hip to be Q” – Forget square, in this town it’s hip to be queer and this all ages event has an incredible lineup that will surely last hours upon hours. So here’s to hoping the kids these days have attention spans long enough to catch performances by singer/songwriter and rock icon Kaia Wilson, stoner drag twinsies ChiChi and Chonga, sexy Rose City Sirens, and flamboyantly dirty Fannie Mae Darling among others.

A week of Burlesque with ‘Dangerous Curves” & the ‘Rosehip Revue’

Dangerous Curves

Portland is good at a few things: brewing beer and coffee, paving the way for bicyclists, and performative sex. By that I mean that we have some of the highest per capita strip clubs in the nation, as many would put it. But we’re way better than that even. Because we have nuanced and artsy, but no less sexy, burlesque performances that go way beyond any mere striptease. And this week we’ve got 2 big ‘uns.

Dangerous Curves this Wednesday at Red Cap (12th and Stark) is bringing the nation’s premier touring burlesque troupe to our fair city featuring the likes of Anita Cookie, Clams Casino, Darlinda Just Darlinda, GiGi La Femme & Minnie Tonka, who have been called everything from “mastermidn fo bizarre extravaganza” to “charmingly inebriated, hilarious and sizzling hot.” Their Brooklyn flavor will be a lovely balance to our Northwest palettes, represented by Baby Le’Strange, Hai Fleisch and ChiChi and Chonga.

St Patty’s Day weekend includes a ‘Gaycation’ of ‘Chocolate Cities’ and ‘Jelly Rolls’ and lots of bands

Hot gay leprechauns...

Thursday

Happy St Patty’s Day y’all. I know many of you will protest that the “snakes” Patrick was driving out were peace-loving pagans, and yet others of you may be flashing the Protestant orange. Either way I’m not a huge St Pat celebrator but I’m down to drink a green beer and and get pinched with the best of ’em. It is not political for me (easy to say from my comfortable west coast seat eh?). So that’s the spirit of this Irish tinged weekend picks. But feel free to discuss more important matters below.

No cover St Paddy’s at Flipside – Salem’s hottest q party is offering to let you get down sans door cash. More to spend on Irish whiskey. But sure if I’d trust the dollar wells though…who am I kidding, of course I would.

Burlesquire makes for an early weekend but don’t forget to ‘Drop Shop’ it, bend it, ‘Stain’ it, (Dirt)bag it and get some ChiChi and Chonga

Burlesquire performs monthly at Burlesque in Boyland

Tonight

Burlesque in Boyland with BurlesquireThe weekend just keeps getting earlier! Forget that I’m currently missing out on both Peep Show and Gay Survivor at the moment, tomorrow ushers in the inaugural boylicious burlesque show with Burlesquire. Though there may be male strippers aplenty no one has the sexy shakin’ it skills like these boys. They are loved by lesbians even. Which is why it is so appropriate that they bejoined by Rose City Siren Delilah Sinn and a host of varied sexy-as-hell genders.

Thursday

Welfare AIDS film premiere from ChiChi and ChongaThese amazing drag queens have exploded onto the scene in a mere few weeks. I’m already overwhelmed by their amazing performances and hotness. And they’ve already got a film premiere! Shit! It’s also a benefit for AIDS Walk Portland and oh so many drink specials…

Drop Shop afterparty – Don’t worry if the drink specials have you blazed already, just keep on keeping on at Red Cap for Drop Shop right after the film premiere. A combination of Portland favorites strippers and queer DS is helmed by DJ Mani who drops the booty shakin’, ass bouncin’ beats of Nola and the dirty dirty south. Or as close as you can get in this town. Plus pole dancing lead by DQ extraordinaire Exstacy Inferno. Hot.

Pride Saturday...keep it comin' queers

It's Kaj-Anne Peppar vs Blow Pony...who's gonna win?

I know yer tired…so am I…but we persevere…cuz it’s Saturday night y’all

The Dyke(ish?) MarchDespite all the confusion and disorganization the Dyke March will trudge on in 2010. But be careful because it’s an hour earlier this year! Gathering at 5pm with a 6pm step off this parade of “dykes” is really more about celebrating Portland’s appreciation for and power of otherly gendered peoples, women, dykes, transpeople and other non-conformers. So what if it’s run into your ex-girlfriend march. You live in Portland. Get over it.

SMYRC’s Gayest Day of the Year Bike Ride – We get so wrapped up in our alcohol-fueled debauchery that we sometimes forget that wholesome activities that include youngsters can be just as amazing and Prideful. Not that I’m always so innocent when astride my trust lavender Bridgestone roadie Lola, but at least I can pretend.

Pride Pet paradeI’ve never been a good lesbian, as I have never owned by own dog or cat, (I mean, I’ve walked a dog so that cute girls will talk to me) but a queer lubba puppy and a cuddly kitteh so you know the folks will be out. Even if my favorite happen to be the Prideful goats, one of whom won the Just Out Pet’s category that I helped judge (oops! Is the cat out of the bag?)

Don’t shade your eyes for Peep Show

Sally Ingus Wilder

Variety shows, drag and performance art in Portland can be hit or miss. For as many mind-blowing acts, there are long drawn out talent shows featuring more talking than artistry. But local (and NICE) drag diva Artemis Chase has hit on something fabulous with this year’s Miss Thing so I have no doubts that tomorrow’s Peep Show will be equally worth seeing.

I was […]

Homomentum's Gaycademy Awards

We can be disappointed by the real Academy Awards but Portland is great at making shunning the mainstream in favor of our own winners. Homomentum‘s Gaycademy Awards will be just such a show.

We have all been enthralled by the last five boldly themed shows and Saturday should be no different with a double dose of surprise out of town guests Jukie Sunshine and Alysia Angel as well as […]
