Hello Sailor! 'Maggots and Men' screens Thursday at the Hollywood Theater

Thursday

Beartown 16 goes all weekend long with an array of amazing events. Perry has some highlights in an earlier post. She was particularly excited about massages but I’m kinda down with the UnderBear Dance Party and how fun it would be to traipse Mississippi with a clan of cubs.

Maggots and Men: Queering History/Revisioning Utopia – This film revisions post-revolutionary Russia with a sailoriffic genderf***ed twist. I love how awesome and weird we can be sometimes. The historic Hollywood Theater is the perfect place to indulge in this film. Fleetweek here we come!

Purple Rhinestone Eagle

Thursday

Purple Rhinestone Eagle‘s Bad Dream Tour kickoff with Fucking Lesbian Bitches“I don’t compromise. I’m metal..” And with hot local ladies making it you don’t have to. Seriously fuzzy riffs and bold but not scratchy vocals combine the best of 70s hard rock with punk and blues undertones. PRE’s new album The Great Return is out now and they’re ready to take their act on the road. Joined by FLB for their hometown farewell helps prove hardcore punk’s not dead, nor are ironic band titles with the word “lesbian” in them.

Hustle: A trans top surgery benefit dance party – It’s time to dance your boobs off with DJs Kinetic (Blowpony), Trans Fat (Maricon, Blowpony, Cafeteria) and Roy G Biv (Bent, Blowpony). Good cause and there’s bound to be trannies and chasers so take your pick.

Corvino asks, “Is there only one way to have gay sex?” Take the qPDX poll

When I was a rowdy tweenage baby dyke we used to run through the streets of downtown Portland asking strangers if they could define lesbian sex, a question that often mystified these adults. And though most of us have it often enough (hopefully anyway) there still isn’t a strictly agreed upon definition.

But while this sexual fluidity and lack of sexual definitions is familiar to the ladies (even straight ones, just watch Clerks or ask Bill Clinton) gay men are more well known for having rigidly defined roles. One of the most important bedroom roles has been whether you’re a top or bottom. But what happens if you don’t even particularly like anal sex at all? Is that the only way to be gay? 365 gay columnist Michael Corvino not only asks that question but answers emphatically no saying,

A sex poll for the ladies in advance of ‘sex talk with 2 homos’

Only the classiest...

Earlier this week I came across a very brief and slightly bizarre little article on The Advocate’s website discussing female proclivities towards anal sex. It starts out with the ubiquitous stats on how women are more sexually fluid than men, yada yada yada. Nothing new there. But it goes on to say that:

Among lesbian and bisexual women, the study shows that 48% reported having anal sex with a man, compared to 33% of heterosexual women. Additionally, bisexual women report having more vaginal sex with men than women who say they are completely straight.

OSU cancels visit from sex-positive speaker Tristan Taormino

Tristan Taormino

Well known sex writer, columnist, and pornographic film director Tristan Taormino was scheduled to be the keynote speaker at Oregon State University’s upcoming Modern Sex Conference in February. Taormino is the well known author of such books as The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women and the series editor for fourteen volumes of Best Lesbian Erotica.  She is also an advocate of non-monogamy and has written the book Opening Up: Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships.

However, just last week OSU cancelled Taormino’s visit to the school because the school administration said it wouldn’t pay Taormino to come speak because she is a pornographer.

Money to pay for Taormino’s visit, (about 3,000 dollars) came from the school’s general fund which is public money paid into by statewide taxpayers.

Lucky ‘Buckhunters,’ Gaycation with Katastrophe, Her HRC and ‘dancing on your own’ with Gula Delgatto this weekend

Katastrophe performs Saturday with Athens Boys choir at Gaycation

Whew! So one small weekend of only a few events and we’re back to the melee of 20 million dueling events. Here’s what you got to choose from.

Thursday

Triskaidekaphilia (Just My Luck)Former Just Out arts writer Jimmy Radosta hasn’t had the best of luck. But his loss is our comedic gain with his one man show that highlights his growing up in Salem and other gay misfortunes. Billed as  blending the dry wit of David Sedaris with the political humor of Jon Stewart and the cheeky musical stylings of “Weird Al” Yankovic, this love of 13 is surely a good luck charm for the rest of us.

Radical Act at the Reel Music FestivalRadical Act may have been made in 1995 but women in rock still have a glass ceiling. The film screened at Outfest in Los Angeles and appeared in 1999 as part of Miranda July’s “Break My Chainletter” collection, and now it’s being revived at the Reel Music Festival.

Last of the best of 2010

Best Pride backup crew! Photo by Diana Edwards

So it’s been quite a week of reliving 2010. Truthfully I’m a little burned out. But before you shed all your summer skin and head into the depths of 2011 fresh and new here are a few last looks back at some of the “best” random sh** of the year…

Most asked question

What time is the dyke march? (A wink and a nod to the amusing insights of Katey Pants).

Best LGBT quote of the year

“You know if I could go back in time, I would lez it up 24 hours. Believe me, one thing I would not miss? Balls. Terrible little things.”
