A year of getting Bent, and ‘lions and tigers and bears oh my!’ with Mrs and Bearracuda this weekend

Purrrfect Brandie hosts Mrs Pussy Poppin' Friday night

Thursday

Don’t forget the jam packed 30th Annual Gender Symposium at Lewis and Clark going all week long and continuing into Thursday and Friday. An extra special highlight will be Homomentum‘s foray into the all ages space. Minors get ready for a raucous good time!

Trans Life open house – Every Thursday is a chance for trans folks to get together and find out about the programs, support groups and social outings that the Q Center has to offer. This night, allies, friends and partners can also get in on the cross gender fun. Great day for tranny chasers.

First Thursday, Kate Bornstein, Nautical (and plenty of other) Nonsense in a pre-Mardi Gras weekend

Special thanks go to Comcast this week. Technical difficulties made it impossible for this post to get done last night and this weekend is front loaded with goodness. So as soon as you’re done reading this, go out and get the party started!

Thursday

Summing at the Parts – new works by Gia Goodrich – Installation art provocateur Gia Goodrich is back. This time she explorers the self-creation of gender as it relates to queer identity using a very (pseudo?) intellectual scale she designed herself called the Gender Perceptivity Scale. I’m sure there will also just be plenty of hotness to perceive.

‘Forgive me Father,’ it’s a ‘Cafeteria’ ‘Blow Pony’ weekend!

Saturday's 'Blow Pony' features Serendipity Jones

Thursday

Forgive Me Father at Pivot – I have no trouble reconciling my hedontistic, panganisitc spiritual desires with my homosexual ones, but many of those who hold more subdued beliefs do. This night is for them. There’s quite a movement incorporating faith with gay liberation and this is just the function to explore that.

The CafeteriaVendetta is a small venue but this school themed night has it bursting at the seems. And don’t think you’ll be safe by showing up at 9. The door gods take station at the early work time of, like, 8 or something. Thank god it’s worth it.

Gula Delgatto covers Robyn’s ‘Dancing On My Own’ (video)

Gula Delgado

Gula DelgadoI was in attendance last Saturday (the night of wildly competing queer events) for drag raunch queen Gula Delgado aka Eric Sellers‘ video release party. Held at Maricon at the Matador, the tiny dive bar west of downtown, the space was incredibly packed and difficult to navigate but the drinks were cheap and everyone was friendly despite (or perhaps because of) the lack of personal space.

A brilliant rendition of Robyn‘s Dancing On My Own, Delgado’ not only donned the parody outfit but actually sang the tune herself in the video directed by Devon McGrath. It wasn’t quite as out there as one might expect after seeing Gula do some really nasty things on stage, such as the sex, drugs and scattalogical references during her ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas performance but it was satisfying and easy to dance to. Some fans thought this might be an attempt not to completely scare the mainstream (or Marty Davis, who has already admitted her fear).

Last of the best of 2010

Best Pride backup crew! Photo by Diana Edwards

So it’s been quite a week of reliving 2010. Truthfully I’m a little burned out. But before you shed all your summer skin and head into the depths of 2011 fresh and new here are a few last looks back at some of the “best” random sh** of the year…

Most asked question

What time is the dyke march? (A wink and a nod to the amusing insights of Katey Pants).

Best LGBT quote of the year

“You know if I could go back in time, I would lez it up 24 hours. Believe me, one thing I would not miss? Balls. Terrible little things.”

Keep up your ‘Homomentum’ this weekend through ‘Thick & Thin’ with Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers is in town Saturday and she is indeed a piece of work!

Most of us are likely tired (and perhaps a little wounded) by a night out ringing in the New Year but there’s no rest for the wicked. This weekend might be a tad slower than usual but there’s plenty of not to be missed gay weekend events.

Thursday

Review (and photos) of Monday night’s Queer Quistmas with Fannie Mae Darling

Fannie Mae Darling hosts. Photo by Marty Davis / Just Out

In Portland’s world of on-the-fly and occasionally inebriated performance world, Fannie Mae Darling managed to keep the local theme alive while providing a quality holiday drag, theater and music extravaganza. In constantly rotating dresses Darling kept the crowd engaged and giggling through over two and a half hours of stage antics. Yes, while drunken.

Just Out’s Marty Davis has all the photos to prove it was a spectacularly successful Quitsmas blend of talent on her Facebook page.

Big Freedia will make sure the azz is ever'where on Friday

Thursday

Claudia Meza presents New Musics: A Night of Modern Classical and Avant Garde ExplorationExplode Into Color’s Claudia Meza helms this foray into experimental musical hipsterdom. Can queer drummer extraordinaire usher in Portland’s own version of a John Cage era? Tomorrow’s first night of acts including bearded electro-knight Copy, internationally renowned and absurdly prolific sound artist Daniel Menche, and Classical Revolution PDX, who will tackle Philip Glass’ dizzying String Quartet No.5 suggests so.

Cabin Project CD release party – Two experimental music happenings in one night? We are a blessed city. The yearlong “cabin project”  comes together this night to showcase the amazing congregation of cello, synth, drums, banjo, violin, and lots of voices.

Portland’s official holiday drink presented by Darcelle

Well, it looks like Darcelle may be P-Town’s (drag) Queen of the Holidays. She’s already appeared on daytime television explaining how to stuff a bird and now she’s back to present us with our official drink of the season.

Watch as she joins Clyde Common‘s Jeffrey Morgenthaler as he makes her a drink she has named the Darcelle Holiday Delight. Recipe below.

Thanksgiving holiday weekend happenings

Milk-n-Hunny Saturday at Red Cap

Whether you are with your biological family or a chosen one, I hope all have a day full of food to be thankful for. I know I’m certainly thankful to live in a city with so much to do, even on a holiday weekend. So use those extra days off!

Wednesday

Lez Stand Up with Kupp! – One of the funniest ladies I know is Kirsten Kuppenbender, with just enough energy to be entertaining without seeming like many ADD-addled comedians.  And when do you need a little humor more than the eve before a day of family gathering with wine-induced arguments and narcoleptic tryptophan napping. With 7 or 8 performers including Nicole Georges and Whitney Streed along with the smooth stylings of DJ Party Martyr this is a night of jokes and stories that will be way better than Grandpa’s.
