Get ready for a Gaycation, new Trans(It) night, March Madness and the end of the world

You’re weekend picks for queer Portland […]

A weekend of galas, launches, anniversaries, a return to SugarTown

The legendary Bob Mould performs at Q Center's annual Winter Gala Saturday

Thursday

PQ Monthly launch party – A new publication is in town and tonight is the night both the print and web versions launch. We are excited to share resources and have even more reason to make sure local queer coverage is comprehensive and thought-provoking. Oh yeah, and an excuse to party.

Friday

SugarTown queer soul – The best queer homage to 60s and 70s soul in town is finally back after a brief hiatus. The new venue of the Spare Room has a great space, cheap drinks and will be a refreshing change to the usual old haunts. And this special return also features this week’s DJ profile for Freaky Outty. Plus where else can you get sweet treats by Emily Franco in addition to a drink? It’s a killer comeback you won’t want to miss.

It’s a weekend for Lovers, Lezzers doing stand up, Bears and Booty Calls

Lavender Mirror

Thursday

Lovers benefit show – I love the combination of live music and DJs to begin with but when it’s also a benefit for a community member without healthcare its a triple win. Not to mention the lineup is incredible. Lovers are probably the best Portland queer band at the moment, (their last album was our number 1 of 2010), and Anaturale is some damn good hip hop I haven’t seen around these parts in years. Brittle Bones the q folks behind the decks are also stellar. With such a diverse group how can you not check it out?

Friday

Peep Show hosted by Fannie Mae Darling – The outlandish drag persona of Fannie Mae manages to bridge that drag divide of monstrous and beautiful quite magically. So while it may be sad to lose Peep Show’s usual hosts Darling is the perfect PS insert. Apparently the theme this month is sex, but isn’t always with Fannie? (And with Peep Show for that matter?)

Merry Quistmas Mrs. Twin Peaks, you Superstar Divas, and Stumped noms

The 5th Annual Queer Quistmas is this Saturday at the Q Center

Thursday

Saucy Santa photo ops – Yet another chance to be a Portland sexy weirdo and ask Santa for more than the lump of coal you deserve. Have you made the naughty or nice list this year?

Portland Idol‘s Holiday Harmonies – Get in the holiday spirit with some of P-Town best voices.

Friday

The 1st annual Stumped Awards – This Razzie style award show was dreamed up by the folks behind Peep Show and Genderf***ing Takover. Who will take home the statue celebrating Synciest Lips, Highest Blood Alcohol Content or Most Epic Facebook? This is bound to be the gayest red carpet you’ve ever seen.

Say Yes to a weekend of Shorty Shorts film, a Playboy Club, Peep Show’s Turkey Day and some Sordid Confessions

Carla Rossi hosts the Thanksgiving edition of Peep Show this Friday

Thursday

Lucinda Williams – Singer songwriter loved by the lesbos takes the stage at the Crystal Ballroom.

Friday

Del ShoresSordid Confessions – Del tries to make up for standing us up last time he was in town. The creator of the cult favorite TV series Sordid Lives (starring Olivia Newton-John, Rue McClanahan, Leslie Jordan and Caroline Rhea) is touring his hilarious new standup show. Raunchy, gay and not for the feint of heart, this seems like a delightfully small venue to catch the outrageous one man show.

Peep Show Thanksgiving with Carla Rossi – Little Tommy may be on vacay but there is no lack of talent in this Turkey day celebration of drag and performance. Hosted by wino Carla Rossi you’ll get to see favorites such as Fannie Mae Darling, Georgia Ray Babycakes and Melody Awesomazing while being introduced to some newcomers with fabulous names like Dionysus, ShpongledHoops and Austin Tatious. (Dammit why did I think of that drag name? I ever have an Austin necklace) Also, make sure you fight the tryptophan and wine induced coma to dance afterword with some of your favorite DJs.

Get your raunchy comedy, your Rebel Grrl and your Sass Patrol ready for a weekend of the old and the new, the Bent and the blue

Claw vs. Claw plays Saturday at the 1 year anniversary of Rebel Girl

Don’t forget Electrogals, which continues all week. And check out an interview with founder Heather Perkins from earlier in the week.

Thursday

Fist: Electro queer night – New dance night at a new venue. And we like new and different don’t we? Jams from DJ Hookerface so be prepared. This is an electro night and Hooker and I used to rave a decade ago so shit’s gonna be real, and hella danceable.

Smutty Clown open mic – Here in P-Town we like to make everything dirty. So naturally, we already had dirty poetry, now we need dirty comedy. I’m a huge fan of the innuendo myself, as anyone who has spent time with me after 5 o’clock can tell you. I also appreciate sexy comedians. So who knows what to expect from those signing up but it’s hosted by Whitney Streed and Sterling Clark (basically the template they used for Portlandia‘s “…all the hot girls wear glasses… line) so you know it’ll be off to a good start.

DJ of the Week — Mr Charming

DJ Mr Charming. Ginger Girl Photography / Amy LaBree Ferrell

Every week we introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.

Gaycation is one of the longest running queer nights. It happens this Saturday at Holocene, and has been, for the past 5 and a half years. It’s a damn good night at one of the most interesting music clubs and still as fresh and fun as it always was. At it’s helm is Mr Charming aka Mary McAllister, who knows how to throw a good party, as most of my 20s can attest to. And this Saturday is her birthday, so you know she’s gonna bring it.

She has also come to be a friend of mine, the beginning of which I will mark with a special random video ending for those of you who stick it out through the post. It has nothing to do with anything, other than it’s October and therefore Haunted House time. So let’s view it as something of an outtake circa 2008.

A weekend Gaylabration of peep shows, bears, candy and showgirls (Peaches Christ!)

Carmen Carrera from RuPaul's Drag Race makes an appearance Friday at Peep Show

Don’t forget the biggest fest of the weekend, Not Enough!, preview in this interview with organizers Sheana Corbridge and Edgar Frias.

Thursday

Love Crimes: Faguette Disco – Haven’t seen DJ Girlfriends around in awhile so I’m glad to see him back and teaming up with another of Portland’s great lesbian loving and adorable gay DJs LunchLady. Advertising a cross of pulp fiction and Tom of Finland means a welcome infusion of irreverence to perk up a scene that hasn’t seen a new night in awhile. (Because we have so many good ones currently I know. Just sayin’…)

Portlandia is also SugarTown, Gaycating, Glowing and checkin’ out some Lez Stand Up

Thursday

SugarTown Ice Cream Soul-cial – Last month’s very first ST was a sweet sweet success. Despite the sound trouble early on this celebration of sweetness and soul left a pleasant taste on everyone’s tongue. The music was fun and a nice respite from the usual club fare, the sweet treats for sale were cheap and delicious and there were just enough people to create plenty of opportunities mingle and dance without that claustrophobic and intense heat sometimes generated by popular nights. Sweet Thursday perfection. *

Friday

Crave presents “Glow” – Crave’s annual black light party is always a messy success. And as the creators are moving on to that bigger glow stick coast city Los Angeles, it might also be your last chance to feel the dark light love. This is your chance to relive your raver days or revel in what you missed for those of you in your 20s.  But get there early cuz this tiny space fills up fast with females, and besides, they have killer drink specials before 10. *

A weekend of Jelly Rolls and Chunky Dunks, chicas and chickas (boom), and a badass Booty reunion

Gaycation's Mr Charming performing at Booty back in the day...i comes full circle in the inner SE gay strip...

Thursday

Don’t forget to keep your eyes in Latino Gay Pride all weekend long!

Friday

Poison Waters & friends happy hour show – Good ol’ fashioned drag divaliciousness in the relaxed atmosphere of Al’s Den at the new Crystal Hotel.

Jelly RollThis is billed as a party for fat folkes and allies but I think it’s going to be much more than that. I hear that one of the best dressed backup dancers I’ve ever seen, Melody Awesomazing, will be performing. I can’t think of a better way to start of a weekend of chub empowerment than with her glitter facial hair and neon stockings.

ChickaBoomBoomRecords by ladies, spun by ladies. More info from Lyska earlier in the week.
