Project Mayor-Man winner "SamDroid"Mayor Sam Adams is a good sport. Portland is irreverent and expects its mayor to match our weirdness step for step. So when Stumptown Comics hosted a contest to dress up the Mayor as a superhero he was all about it. He’s just thankful to be fully clothed, even if it does mean several layers of spanks. Not sure that’s something I need to know about our city-leader-in-chief but there you have it. Continue reading »
Teacher’s pet, I wanna be teacher’s pet… The school play is a vehicle for her true feelings...Mädchen in Uniform, one of the most important films of all time, is lesbionic. Made in 1931, it’s an artistic commentary on fascism and queer love. The movie is set in Prussia, and illuminates a young lady name Manuel, who is a new student at the world’s harshest all girl’s boarding school. On her first day, she is stripped of all her personal possessions and bullied into her appropriate place on the food chain. Continue reading »
Rainbow Noise artists Cee, Loco Niinja, Jay Squared , Stud PhamousGays in hip hop has always been a complicated subject. It’s no longer completely unknown, Cazwell has stormed the scene, Lady Sovereign is big in the UK, Katastrophe and Athens Boys Choir are constantly touring favs, and there’s dozens of smaller queer hip hop acts both local and national. But much of mainstream urban music can still be homophobic and there’s still a hunger for more positive representations of LGBT MCs and DJs. And a big project just emerged from right across the river called Rainbow Noise Entertainment.
RainbowNoise is an entertainment company that specializes in marketing lesbian and gay talent to mainstream audiences without compromising the artists’ individual style or gender presentation…From conscious rap to old school and party hip hop styles, RainbowNoise artists cover it all. The keen focus on production quality and lyrical strength sets them ahead of many independent labels in their class.
This is a worthy project that is interesting enough for it’s goal but there’s even more compelling aspects. Continue reading »
If you’re a football fan living in Portland, you may feel a little bereft right now. While the Ducks captivated the nation this fall, Eugene’s kind of far away; Seattle, home to our nearest NFL franchise, is even farther — and besides, it’s the off season for both teams (and with a lockout looming, the Seahawks will be out of play for even longer than usual).
The good news is that there’s a football team right here in Portland in season right now! The Portland Shockwave compete in the Independent Women’s Football League, and they are the real deal. After narrowly missing the playoffs last year, the Shockwave are off to a great start, having soundly beaten the Seattle Majestics 21-0 in last Saturday’s season opener.

More than 20,000 students are registered and hundreds of thousands more will participate at middle schools, high schools and colleges from every state in the country in GLSEN’s National Day of Silence on Friday April 15th by taking some form of a vow of silence to raise awareness about anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) name-calling, bullying and harassment.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the first Day of Silence, held at the University of Virginia in 1996 by students who wanted to call attention to anti-LGBT bullying on campus. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) became the official sponsor in 2001, and participation has grown to include students from more than 7,500 middle and high schools-10% of schools nationwide–last year and hundreds of colleges. In the early days of internet at my high school Net Nanny programs handily blocked many of my tame searches for the likes of “gay pharoah” or “breast cancer” (yes, breast was blocked in the 90s). Not someone who regularly works with teenagers I don’t really know how restrictive today’s internet is in secondary schools. But one thing is becoming fairly clear, not all access is created equal.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has launched a project that asks public high school students to inform them if their school blocks access to pro-gay websites and doesn’t anti-gay websites. Continue reading »
Trees can be evil! It's Bright? It's Wonderful?  Well, this blog was late. Really late. I have some excellent excuses, though. What kind of proper queer would I be, if I didn’t have some awesome excuses? Thank you, San Francisco, for being a little too much fun this weekend. So, let’s dry out, and take a wholesome journey together to appreciate a Disney Classic. Continue reading »
Dangerous CurvesPortland is good at a few things: brewing beer and coffee, paving the way for bicyclists, and performative sex. By that I mean that we have some of the highest per capita strip clubs in the nation, as many would put it. But we’re way better than that even. Because we have nuanced and artsy, but no less sexy, burlesque performances that go way beyond any mere striptease. And this week we’ve got 2 big ‘uns. Dangerous Curves this Wednesday at Red Cap (12th and Stark) is bringing the nation’s premier touring burlesque troupe to our fair city featuring the likes of Anita Cookie, Clams Casino, Darlinda Just Darlinda, GiGi La Femme & Minnie Tonka, who have been called everything from “mastermidn fo bizarre extravaganza” to “charmingly inebriated, hilarious and sizzling hot.” Their Brooklyn flavor will be a lovely balance to our Northwest palettes, represented by Baby Le’Strange, Hai Fleisch and ChiChi and Chonga. When I was a rowdy tweenage baby dyke we used to run through the streets of downtown Portland asking strangers if they could define lesbian sex, a question that often mystified these adults. And though most of us have it often enough (hopefully anyway) there still isn’t a strictly agreed upon definition.
But while this sexual fluidity and lack of sexual definitions is familiar to the ladies (even straight ones, just watch Clerks or ask Bill Clinton) gay men are more well known for having rigidly defined roles. One of the most important bedroom roles has been whether you’re a top or bottom. But what happens if you don’t even particularly like anal sex at all? Is that the only way to be gay? 365 gay columnist Michael Corvino not only asks that question but answers emphatically no saying, Continue reading » | |
