Dolores Huerta Supports the Freedom to Marry

As you might have noticed, Basic Rights Oregon is hard at work on a freedom to marry campaign.

This week, labor leader and activist Dolores Huerta stated her support for marriage equality in a powerful video.

In this video, Dolores Huerta says supporting the freedom to marry is “so important” because “it’s a human right.” Ms. Huerta has spent more than a half-century advocating for human rights, […]

Midweek fun includes ladies arm wrestling for a cause, ga(y)me night and queer country dancin’

Can you be this tough for In Other Words?

Hump day in PDX is happenin’! So yeah, the actual cause for this Wednesday’s Ladies Arm Wrestling tourney is to raise funds for one of the country’s only remaining feminist bookstores, In Other Words, but it’s really a benefit for all of us that like to show of and/or swoon over some nice guns. The event is open for anyone who is woman-identified. Everyone is invited to watch. But I can’t decide whether I’m more excited to watch or perform. Story of our queer lives right?

Competitors are encouraged to issue “personal challenges” to one another. It’s a great way to get that beef taken care of before it erupts on Facebook right? Adoring fans can also place “bets” on their faves.

Strait-Jacket, a Joan Crawford Masterpiece

Feminism? Not sure... but satisfying? Definitely.

Warning! This movie depicts ax murders! Warning? More like Welcome! Why stay satisfied with Faye Dunaway’s impersonation, “Christina, bring me the ax!” Instead, you can watch a movie where the actual Joan Crawford swings one around. It’s Joan playing a woman named Lucy, and Diane Baker as her daughter. Also, Lee Majors makes his first on screen performance as her murdered husband. Lee went on to become very famous, for among other things, starring in “The Six Million Dollar Man”.

The Ethical Butcher presents the Northwest Farm & Table Project

From Berlin’s EB blog:

As local produce begins to fill our farmer’s markets and grocery stores once again, I am announcing a brand new project! Both the Bacon Gospel and Heritage Breed Supper Club will continue to preach the local meats truth later this year, but The Northwest Farm & Table Project drives the message home in a whole new way!

Some of you may recall those raging community dinners I was doing last summer with Tressa Yellig of Salt, Fire & Time. One plate dinners overflowing with local meats and produce had people lining up all the way to the sidewalk! Others have attended my more formal dinners and bacon tastings or that big bash last fall for Primal Cuts. My style is about making this amazing, local food accessible to more people. So, as the farm season gets going, I have been planning this year’s list of events and could think of no better way to take the
conversation to another level than to bring the message home! To your  home, that is.

The Northwest Farm & Table Project runs from April 22nd (Earth Day) to May 20th!

National online gay news publication Queerty shuts down operations and other queer media struggles

I've always loved their tagline

I just heard yesterday that one of my favorite sources for national/international LGBT news, Queerty, ceased to exist with only the vaguest of explanations. This is what they say on their site:

After more than five years of serving the LGBT community with news and entertainment, Queerty has come to a close. The decision to shutter the site was not an easy one to make, and it is with great pain that we say goodbye to our loyal readership. From all of Queerty’s writers and contributors, from our first unto our last day, thank you for spending some time with us.

Today I found some explanation from 365’s Jennifer Vanasco, who reblogs from Queerty (and Jossip) founder David Hauslaib:

Local attitudes in Oregon shape risk of suicide attempts among lesbian, gay youths, study shows

You can go ahead and mark this in the “duh” category but a new study, conducted in Oregon, suggests that gay youth are more likely to attempt suicide in homophobic environments.

The study, in the journal Pediatrics, scored the social environment in 34 Oregon counties using five criteria, including the share of schools with anti-bullying programs and anti-discrimnation policies that cover sexual orientation. The findings suggest that expanding these programs to more schools could substantially reduce suicides and suicide attempts by young people.
