Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss introduce new musical project Wild Flag

Wild Flag

Although many of us that came of age in the ’90s and early 2000s can point to several riot grrl and dyke punk influences, few bands that celebrated queer women’s music made it to the mainstream. Sleater-Kinney was one band that was able to cross that divide. So when they played their last shows in August of 2006, we all mourned their indefinite hiatus.

The three ladies have not been idle of the past four years, either concentrating on family or non-musical projects, but finally two-thirds have reemerged with a new band with former Helium member Mary Timony. Out singer/guitarist Carrie Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss are members of the new supergroup Wild Flag, which also features the Minders’ Rebecca Cole.

Be an old school OQ at the Original Queer Night tonight

I did a search for queer 90s and this came up. Pretty emblematic now that I think about it…

We all know by the trail of dead nights (RIP Market and Castro, Manic Mondays et al) how tough it can be to get the queers out on a Monday night. But back in the days (you know, the 90s) were we had to beg venues for a […]

The weekend is ‘Not Enough’ even with ‘Virgo Madness,’ ‘Gaycations,’ ‘Candy Shop,’ and boat shoes

Dexter Flowers and Cooper Lee Bombardier perform Sunday at Not Enough! Festival

Thursday

Bollywood Bike In with QurbaniGiving Portland a little much needed cultural flavor local DJ Anjiali and Kid Sister are showing classic Bollywood films outside the Q Center (4115 N Mississippi) all month long. This week features Qurbani and I’m excited to see a South Asian take on the 80s…

Ratatat afterparty with Rude DudesRatatat are not a gay band but they’re hipsters and isn’t that about the same thing in Portland these days? Don’t worry, they’ve teamed up with “Rude” homos for a spanktastic dance party and DJ set. This might be the most mellow Thursday I’ve seen in awhile.

Friday

Mendy’s Big Gay Boat Party Do you need an excuse to bust out those Top-Siders and sailor hat? No, you don’t. But in case you want to fool around with others in sea garb this is your chance.

Forsorcerers with Hooray for Everything and Don’t
– Didn’t think Portland could get any weirder?  How about a queer fantasy metal band? Despite the schtick, hoever, Forsorcerers are incredibly talented drum and guitar heros that will aurally rock you into remembering why you love the rough stuff.

Rufus Wainwright reigns this weekend along with TBA ‘Art Parties’, women in uniform, parkside talent shows and ‘Dirt’y, skanky ‘Bent’ up favorites

Rufus Wainwright plays tonight as part of the TBA Festival

Tonight

Rufus Wainwright with the Oregon Symphony – Portland’s yearly Time Based Art festival is pretty epic and pretty gay in and of itself. But tonight’s opening act is sure to be one of the more memorable musical collaborations. This celebrated male vocalist has had immense success as a pop star but easily scored an entire opera, Prima Donna, as well. On the last stop in his North American tour Wainwright will entries from his latest opera, performed by local soprano Janis Kelly as well as some “classical” Rufus that will showcase the composer’s own vocal range when he sings two concert pieces by French composer Hector Berlioz.

Dirtbag Jenny Bruso’s Alberta queer non-poppy sweat dance party this week with guest DJ Lick My Battery. It’s real. It’s raw. And it’s damn good.

Gay days at MusicFest NW

Big Freedia gets the sissies bouncin'!

Besides books, bikes and beer Portland, Oregon is also known for its local music. And the space between summer and fall is when we choose to put it center stage with MusicFest NW starting today and running through the 12th. There’s a smorgasboard of both local and out-of-town bands, DJs and performers and no lack of queers among them. Here’s where to find the gays amidst all the action.

Thursday the 9th sees sissy bounce New Orleans based Big Freedia self-dubbed queen diva, dick-eater, and late night creeper. The culturally queer, hot dirty south bounce has been called rap goes drag by Vanity Fair and is one of the most exciting things to happen to dance music disco. PDX could use an infusion of booty and color and I’d personally be excited to have other bounce-able bums at my back. This may be the most exciting performance of the entire fest.

Labor day weekend picks for the 'Mrs.' first time, frozen t-shirt's last time, and Static's good times

Kaj-Anne Pepper hosts the first Mrs.

As much as I love you all, I can’t say I’m sad to leave town, which is currently raining and may be one of the shortest summer’s I’ve ever experienced in my many PDX years, this holiday weekend. But there are a few eclectic first and last times that are worth checking out if you are braving the local weather for that last sprint of summer good times…

Thursday

TJO’s solo show :::VERTIGINOUS VESTIGES AND OTHER PROOFS THAT IM PHYSIOLOGICALLY INCAPABLE OF BEING A REALIST::: a doodle book – Tara Jane O’Neil is most known for wielding the musical axe but she’s also an avant garde visual artist. Her doodle book selections whimsically incorporate the elements of Dada and Primitivism into a contemporary comic book sketchpad. Food from Dovetail bakery and dykes making music. Oh and likely the best underground art at First Thursday…or at least the most Basquiat.

Brand spankin' new and old 'Pony' favorites, a 'JunKtion' of stuff to do this weekend

Sword and Fern's Mt. Saint Helen's Necklace and Same Dream Necklace

Um, so gee, we’re late this week. I hope that doesn’t mean you missed the 2nd installment of the new queer night Cafeteria at my local Vendetta last night. I sure didn’t. While I didn’t see any lunch trays (get on it boys! Atmosphere!) I saw plenty of crunk gays getting down on that tiny dancefloor. The music was a great mix of oldies, 90s, and today…but mixed way more elegantly than an adult contemporary radio station.

But hey neighbors…can we please keep the patio open just one more hour? As soon as everyone arrives just before 11 the doors shut and it becomes a familiar oven. Someone really needs to develop the technology to harness the energy greated from the body heat of club kids. It’ll be cleaner than coal. I promise.

Melissa Etheridge at Spirit Mountain Casino

Melissa Etheridge

Has it really been so long that the iconic lesbian folk-rocker Melissa Etheridge is already relegated to the casino circuit along with oldies station hits? Does that happen in less than two decades? Apparently the answer is yes, as Etheridge takes stage at Spirit Mountain Casino (27100 SW Salmon River Highway, in Grande Rhonde) tomorrow Tuesday the 24th.

But that doesn’t mean she isn’t still rockin’. This show may be out of town but it is sold out. Despite a recent divorce and battle with cancer the butch blonde heartthrob has had a Broadway debut, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and her new album Fearless Love is getting damn decent reviews.

Lady Gaga Concert: A supernova of faggitude

Lady Gaga Concert: A supernova of faggitude

To say Lady Gaga rocked Portland is an understatement.

She exploded into a supernova of faggitude. Her pro-gay, pro-freak, pro-throw-your-tampon-at-high-school-bullies shook the very foundations that upholds Portland as the “keep-it-weird” center of the world.

Playing to over 20,000 adoring fans at the Rose Garden, Lady Gaga shot her Monster Ball tour like hot liquid into the laps of all the weirdoes and lovers last night. Her high-octane, multi-media, electronic heavy performance charmed the audience at every set movement and dance move. Averaging a costume-change about every three songs, there was an endless supply of spectacle and wonderment. To see photos of last night’s concert, look here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/38163303@N04/sets/72157624768788628/
