Interview with Not Enough! festival’s Sheana Corbridge and Edgar Frias

"Not Enough! chimera" painted by Sergio Torres and decorated by Not Enough! volunteers. It is a representation of the Not Enough! chimeric spirit. Disparate heterogeneity united in one. Photo by Mary Christmas.

This weekend sees the second annual Not Enough! Festival, a weekend long event aimed at creating more opportunities for queer art and music in a collaborative setting. The art/music/film/performance festival that showcases, encourages and supports new work by queer folks regardless of experience and/or “skill” level will take place throughout the weekend at Cathedral Park Place.

qPDX sat down with creators Sheana Corbridge and Edgar Frias to talk about what to expect from Not Enough’s sophomore outing and how it came about.

qPDX: What’s your involvement with Not Enough!?

Sheana Corbridge: I started it with Marlena Chavez, Sergio Torres and Edgar Frias last year and the group of organizers has grown to around 10. I mostly deal with music and bands and took the title of Executive Director last year-but we all work fairly equally within the group. I played in a band last year, my first band playing drums and I am playing guitar in a band this year.

qPDX has always had it’s virtual finger on the pulse of gay Portland nightlife, but it’s been almost a year and a half now that I’ve gotten into a rhythm of counting down the Weekend Picks. This rundown, published every Thursday, came about because there’s so much cool stuff to do in this town that I can’t highlight each individually anymore. I am often so overwhelmed by the choices […]

The ass shakin’ you missed at Big Freedia

In case you weren’t at Dante’s on Saturday for what must surely have been a sissy bouncing inferno. I heard that it was off the chain so I figured I’d give us all a taste of what we missed at the MFNW Big Freedia show with DJ Beyonda and CJ and the Dolls.

This weekend Some are Sparkles, some are Gaga, some are just Bent on having a Gender Fantasy

Preview Kaj-Anne Pepper's GenderFantasy this Friday at Bent

Thursday

DJ Challenge and Gaga look alike contest for AIDSwalk – A benefit for the upcoming walk to bring attention to AIDS (cuz the fight is not over my friends) this Gaga look alike contest can also win you tickets to Ke$ha. Gay cliché as it may be I bet there will be many good costumes provoking laughter and gasps alike. And though I don’t know what the DJ challenge entails I’m excited to see Mr. Charming (Gaycation) participate in it. If it was DJ Hero on the Wii I might even give them a run for their money…

Big Eyes, Tacocat, Forever, & Guantanamo BayWatch – Punk rock at the Fleetwood Shac.

Gay favorites at MuscFest NW

Former Sleater-Kinney frontwoman Corin Tucker (center) now leads her own band at MFNW this Wednesday night

Portland’s big music festival, MusicFest NW, begins tomorrow spewing hip PDX-approved music of many genres over multiple days. And though the conglomeration of music love and music snobbery come in all flavors, they are gleefully mixed. So I’d like to shed some light on the performers dear to a gay audience you won’t want to miss as you delve into the fray.

Wednesday

Corin Tucker Band at Mississippi Studios

Well loved as a founding member of seminal OlyWa grrl punk band SleaterKinney, Corin Tucker‘s new project takes stage the first night of the fest at Mississippi Studios. Softer and with more poise and maturity Tucker still infuses her singer/songwriter new work with her signature vibrato and sass.

LaborGay weekend events will have your executive realness in the Werqforce

Melanie Griffith is workin' our her "Executive Realness' too

Laborday is gayborday (or LaborGay, how far can I work this bad pun?) in the hard-workin’ heartland of Portland, so us young retired people are just gonna use Labor Day weekend as an excuse to extend the party…right?

Thursday

Dirtbag! – The workin’ man’s weeknight party, cuz it’s free and awesome. To find out more about the DJ workin’ this event check out yesterday’s profile of DJ Bruce laBruiser.

A painting show from Mason Bondi & I Mirror/Your Mirror art openings – Downtown/Pearl’s First Thursday may have a snootier reputation than the ridiculous and bohemian Last Thursday on Alberta but it’s always been about the art and there’s good art to be had. Here are two examples from experimental artist and former local Sarah Gottesdiener and Mason Bondi, a painter whose images of small figures amidst huge skies are at once whimsical and haunting.

Dress/Undress is a fashion show to raise money for the fund. We took a minute to sit down with EAF volunteer Nicole Boyer to talk about tonight’s event.

What’s your name and what’s your involvement with the PPCW Equal Access Fund?

My name is Nicole Boyer, and I am PPCW’s Volunteer Programs Coordinator as well as a member of our LGBTQI Committee. I’ve been involved with PPCW for 4 years now, and am passionate about spreading the word about our diverse services and patient population. I and many other PPCW staff contribute $ to the Equal Access Fund from each and every paycheck because we feel so strongly about increasing services for our local LGBTQI community.

What made you think of a fashion show as a fundraiser? Do you think a fashion show is even more likely to be interesting to an LGBT crowd?

DJ of the Week – Alicious

DJ Alicious

qPDX is starting a new feature! Every week we will introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.

First on the docket is DJ Alicious, most known for Crave, Doll House and other Mirage Entertainment productions. You can catch her this Saturday at their Doll House farewell at Hamburger Mary’s.

When and how did you get started DJing?

Music has always been a huge passion of mine.  I used to sit in my bedroom for hours on end as a little kid and craft what I would consider to be the perfect mix tapes!  As I got older, I would be the go to person for music.  In college I hosted many parties and always provided the music.  As for getting started professionally, I officially started deejaying back in February, 2010 for Crave’s “Gold Masquerade Party”.  I have continued to spin for every Crave since then.  It’s so exciting to be a contributing factor in making people dance, smile, and have a good time =)
