World AIDS day candlelight vigil and events

widTomorrow’s many activities mark the 21st Annual World AIDS Day, a time to recognize not only the 25 million individuals lost to HIV and AIDS, but the 33 million global citizens living with the HIV virus today. World AIDS Day Portland lists numerous stories, resources, events and workshops happening throughout the day and for the next week.

To mark world AIDS Day and raise awareness throughout the Portland Metropolitan area, HIV/AIDS service organizations with both domestic and international focus have come together to implement the Nine and a Half Minutes Campaign for 2009. Through this campaign, we envision hundreds of groups – from schools to community-based organizations – to mobilize short actions, events, or campaigns all over the Portland-metropolitan area to raise awareness for 21st Annual World AIDS Day.

Photos from the Gender(Free) For All

Mayor Adams marches at the Gender(Free) For All August 1st

By all accounts I’ve heard so far, Portland’s first independent trans march was a wild success. Though qPDX was not able to make it a Q supporter and friend, Heat Smith, was able to snap a couple good shots (too little too late? Send us more!).

Smith was excited to be next to our intrepid mayor, Sam […]

Letter from Tom Potter concerning Sam Adams recall campaign

Former Mayor Tom Potter sent a letter to Just Out (ostensibly in order to reach the queer community) addressing his support of the Recall Sam Adams campaign.

To my friends in the sexual and gender minority community:

You may have heard that I am supporting the recall of Mayor Sam Adams. Of all the communities affected by Mayor Adams’ actions, this community has deep and personal feelings about the outcome. I know there are strong feelings on both sides of this issue. Because I love this community, I feel it’s important to tell you why I made my decision to support the recall of our Mayor.

More Sam and Beau: Adams recall Breedlove event planning gossip

Photo by Michael Lloyd / The Oregonian

Jasun Wurster (center) filed a petition to recall Mayor Sam Adams this morning. Attorney Erin Fitzgerald accompanied Wurster as they filed the papers with Andrew Carlstrom, left, of the city auditor's office. Michael Lloyd / The Oregonian

We are a bit slow on the uptake, seeing as it was two days ago that Jasun Wurster, leader of the campaign to recall Mayor Sam Adams, officially filed his paperwork. In our defense is was mostly due to technical site issues that barred us from entering anything at all!

Wurster and the rest of the Recall Sam Adams campaign have 90 days to collect 50,000 signatures. They have at least 17,800 so far.

Every time we think this horrific saga might just end, there’s another wonderful wrinkle. Local station KGW aired an interview with Breedlove wherein the young man expresses anger over more of Sam Adams lying and evasion.

Oregon Attorney General John Kroger just released a report today proclaiming that there is not suffucient evidence to pursue any criminal charges against Mayor Sam Adams (PDF).

“We have concluded that there is no evidence to charge, let alone convict, Adams with illegal sexual contact with a minor,” according to Kroger’s investigation.

In addition, the report found no evidence that Adams’ 2008 mayoral campaign violated the law when Adams denied having sexual relations with the young man.

Sam Adams' bike contingent at Pride 2009

Now that we are all finally recovered from our hangovers it’s time to reflect on the weekend. It was a wild success that saw the gorgeous Miss Sabel Scities win Portland’s Drag Race, 115 floats, thousands of attendees, very few protesters and about a million parties.

Below are my weekend highlights but we really want to hear yours, so comment below!

More Beau Breedlove/Sam Adams drama: phone calls and Willamette Week interview

This week has produced some updates in the ongoing Mayor Sam Adams/Beau Breedlove inquiry when The Oregonian published a story chronicaling Adams’ 33 phone calls to the underage Breedlove.

Adams’ phone records show he made most of the calls to Breedlove in the weeks after they met in March 2005. Three months later Breedlove turned 18, the age of consent in Oregon. The records don’t show when Breedlove made calls to Adams…

Sneak peek of Beau Breedlove’s Unzipped cover

Beau Breedlove on the cover of Unzipped magazine

Though the print issue (as if anyone cared…you can print out the picture to put above your bed right?) will not be on newsstands until April 7th, Unzipped has released the cover photo of Portland’s infamous mayor canoodler Beau Breedlove. (Breedlove had an affair with Mayor Sam Adams quite near his 18th birthday, just in case you missed that…) And I gotta say, despite your feelings on the whole debacle, it’s pretty damn hot.
