Best new club nights of 2010

ChiChi and Chonga at Cafeteria's Jocks and Nerds Edition

If there’s one thing we do well here at qPDX it’s partying. And 2010 has just blown us all away, and damaged our livers beyond repair, with its bursting-at-the-seams burgeoning club scene. Dancing isn’t just for downtown anymore. Nopo has emerged as a queer nightlife hotspot alongside the already club-friendly inner Eastside. There’s something for nearly everybody, and I did my best to make an appearance, at least once, and each of them.

5 – Do the Dark/JunKtion tie

Both laid back underground neighborhood parties both Do the Dark and JunKtion had welcome breathing room in contrast to the packed parties elsewhere. But the music was excellent and the venues, Tonic and Local Lounge, were friendly and comfortable with good dance floors and chat areas alike. Oh yeah, and they always had good cheap drink specials.

‘Homomentum’ is back so grab your ‘Cub’ and get ready to ‘Do the Dark’

Riley and Flo sport matching denim onsies at Dirtbag

Thursday

Weekly or monthly, neighborhood or downtown Thursday is a night for favorites Dirtbag! and Drop Shop. I’ll be swillin’ at the perfect little party that could in one of my favorite just big enough locations on Alberta St. Of course, don’t forget the first night of artsy schmoozing at the exciting and all ages Siren Nation festival, which continues all weekend.

Friday

Homomentum: Rebels & OutlawsThe monthly variety show of thematic queer fabulousness is back from summer break with more mayhem and a new location. Downtown’s Fez Ballroom (SW 13th and Stark) should be a much better venue with more room for watching than last year’s now defunct E Room. I have been especially devoid of Catitude in my life lately and I can’t wait to see what they do with such a rebellious theme. Little Tommy Bang Bang & Slim Pickins, Swagger and the long missed All of the Above, should also have some hilarity mixed with hotness that I just can’t wait for.

You know...weekend fun stuff, like Blow Pony, No Shade, Do the Dark and gay river times

Let's have a gay ol' time at the Washougal River!

Tonight

Do the DarkYes, do it. Guest DJ Nolita (Fruitcake) is in town from Oakland and it’s gonna be sick. Oh yeah, and weinie roasting on the back deck. What more could a summer queer ask for? If you don’t already know this party you should.

Friday

Need and Bangs reunion benefitI know a lot of you will be here earlier in the night, but you can still dance it up after right?

No ShadeYes, just keep going. No drama-rama party with a great mix of fabulous peeps. And I really love that they include some mixes to get you in the spirit. I’d totally play it at the pre-funk. Oh yeah, and in case you didn’t have enough Nolita already, she’ll be here too. And you can never get enough.

Last night's Gender Bender-fit and Do the Dark

DJ Freddie Fagula at Do the Dark

Why are we constantly plagued with camera issues? A curse on both our houses? qPDX needs an equipment sugar daddy y’all…But for reals, I did at least get a few crappy shots from last night’s Gender Bender and Do the Dark. Even if I am more excited to see the portraits from Wednesday’s Gay Pizza, taken by the lovely Deya Card. Put ’em up girl!

Pride countdown begins with the weekdays

Rai Villanueva will help kick off Pride with Thursday's gay ass Diesel party

Recently added events starred like so*

Truthfully, I think I’ve been putting off the Pride 2010 calendar because there’s do damn much to do that I’m overwhelmed. So let’s take this piece by piece. First, there’s plenty to do before we even get to the weekend. Workin’ stiffs, of which I now be one, gird your loins and take one for the team. It’s gonna be a busy week.

Tonight

Pride Pub quizDid you know that it’s the 40th anniversary of the first Pride parade commemorating the June 1969 Stonewall riots? That’s why June is Pride month kids. Do you know about Harvey Milk day and Anita Bryant, Lon Mabon and the OCA? Have you ever been to the Lesbian Herstory Archives? Well, gear up your uber gay trivia because this pub quiz is gonna be both fun and educational. I’m putting on my hot librarian glasses cuz the competition is gonna be stiff…

*Gay Pride Kickoff Gay Skate!
Strap on some rollerskates and go kick it with the gays at Oak’s Park. A great way to roll into pride.$6. all ages, bring food donations for Esther’s Pantry. More

Do your weekend right

Meghan Mayhem at last month's Cuda Cabaret

Besides the all weekend long Circus Artemis, which you absolutely should not miss, there’s plenty of other queer happenings worth dancing it out to this weekend. These are what I’m considering…

Tonight

The Gong ShowBad Scene Productions brings you a 70s game show redux for the 2nd time to benefit outside in. Judged by The Mercury’s Wm. Steven Humphrey & Marjorie Skinner and William Batty & Sadie LaGuerre of Wanderlust Circus there’s bound to be nothing appropriate of the former Sissyboy members performing as KD Rang and Mami Tsunami hosted show.

But I’m especially excited to see openers Hammercise with members of the Sprockettes bringing you a whole new way to exercise for summer getting in shape.

Check out a video recap below for a taste:

Start your weekend off right, Do the Dark, No Shade, Blow Pony

Rev your engines. The weekend begins tonight with the Do the Dark, my favorite new Thursday night hot spot with just the right size dance floor and cheap tequila drinks to feed my addition. Ill Camino, Trans Fat and a slightly wounded organizer Freddie Fagula will not disappoint no matter what.

Friday, you must emerge from the darkness into a stark No Shade policy. Brought to you by DJ […]

Spring Fever begins at Thursday's 'Do the Dark'

Special appearance by DJ Beyonda

Though we’ve actually gained an hour of light at the end of our sunny spring days, dusk is still the witching hour for frisky queer gatherings. Organizer and DJ Freddie Fagula is feeling the spring fever, categorizing the beginning as last week’s Bent. With a crowded, sweaty dance floor and hot homos sidling up to one another I can’t say I disagree.

He aims to keep that party vibe going with this Thursday’s Do the Dark Spring Break Edition at the Tonic (NE 31st and Sandy).
