Portland’s queer New Year

kelly-moe

Kelly Moe will perform live at Fruitcake's NYE party

The craziness of New Year’s Eve parties, be they gay or less gay, is well established and usually find me in the safe confines of a cozy NE Portland bungalow. You would think that with this year’s economy that would be especially true. But alas, this year I will be swinging down to the inner SE industrial district to partake of some holiday Fruitcake with DJs Nolita, Gottesfinger, Freddie Fagula, Chelsea Starr (Hotpants/SF)  and Yer Mom (Blo Pony).

My favorite NE party that recently succumbed to the Rumpapankers implosion, will see its last foray and one of organizer Nolita’s last sets at Branx (320 SE 2nd Ave). Mix in live performances by The Lovers, Portland’s most ethereal best-new-thing, Kelly Moe, the sensual chanteuse I used to call my video store boyfriend, and Judy!, art-rock extraordinaire, and you have a holiday happening I’ll venture out for.

Do Jump!‘s lesbo-riffic holiday show has always been a queer holiday staple. But this year there is a new kid in town, who promises a slightly edgier fare.

Put on by Collective of Geniuses, Homo for the Holidays, a new annual show for all those who feel the isolation of the comsumeristic holiday “season” this Saturday from 6-10pm at Switchyard Studios (109 SE Salmon St).

The evening will include brand a new clown performance by the CoG Acrobatics; Aerial by Jack StockLynn, Nikita, and Charity McKee; burlesque by Sahara Dunes, as well as performances by Val the Variety Act and many more.

Photos and recap from Homomentum’s Snowpocalypse

tsa

Airport security will never be the same

The holiday season brought us a special Homomentum performance featuring the cold and snappy celebration of all things queer and seasonal. And you can catch just a glimpse of the white winter wonder with our Snowpocalypse photo gallery.

Performances included a very special TSA burlesque from KT Kusmal and Venus Envy, a final performance from drag queen provocateur Champagne, and a rendition of the Tchaikovsky’s Sugar Plum Fairy dance from Catitude.

The penultimate Homomentum takes stage this Saturday with ‘Snowpocalypse!’

edited ice queens webAs the first decade of the millenium draws to a close, so too does Pants Off Productions‘ performance trilogy Homomentum. The December installment of queer variety awesomeness celebrates the cold season with with a frosty Snowpocalypse! theme this Saturday night, 8pm at the E Room (3701 SE Division).

In memorium of last year’s December arctic blast the dancing queers are here to show off their ice princess steps with Snow Queen MC her/himself Max Voltage. But you won’t be cold for long when the heat of burlesque performers Pigeon Von Tramp and Portland’s burlesque diva Sahara Dunes steam up the frosty windows.

‘That’s What She Said’ comedy benefit

Amy Turner and Kathryn Lounsbery of That's What She Said

Good looks are great, but nothing’s hotter than a lady that’s both sexy and funny. And while I have not seen the That’s What She Said duo in person the ladies of comedy have been getting rave reviews. (And I’m a sucker for a puffy rainbow jacket)

This Saturday at 8pm they take over the Q Center (4115 N Mississippi) to benefit Jeff Bader‘s increasing needs for in-home care as he moves forward in life with ALS.

In a town that has great club nights, concerts, food fairs and beer fests comedy is a much needed entertainment source. To find out more about these ladies check out their bio, along with hip pop hilarious U-Haul video below.

Stuff you don’t want to miss this week

santaUnfortunately, I am out of town and will be missing most of these fabulous events. It also means that because of their sheer number I cannot preview all that I would like, but each are in the calendar and I want to give you a quick heads up on the ones you absolutely should not miss.

Tonight

If you don’t already have plans be sure to check out Poison Waters Notorious Noel tonight at The Original (300 SW 6th). Ms. Waters is likely to speak for herself but check out the holiday festivities getting ready photos at Byron Beck‘s blog. I’m sure he’ll recap as well.

Fat Fancy’s Grand Opening and Hairspray dance party

FF-Opening-FINALFor two years Fat Fancy resale fashions for the plus sized set, has labored on weekends out of a basement in Northeast Portland. And though the space was small, deals abounded and you didn’t want to miss any weekend it was open. But now you can rest a little easier because the ladies behind it all have secured a permanent shop space downtown, and it opens this Saturday.
