Continue reading »   Winning contestant Kaj-anne Pepper with backup dancer Robert Tyree Monthly drag competition Miss Thing at the Fez has quickly become the show to experience the breadth of Portland drag as well as a who’s who of almost every queer circle. And indeed, that night competition was just as fierce as we have come to expect. Nonetheless, no one was surprised when the incorrigible and amazing Kaj-anne Pepper took first place with his ironic, satirical and beautiful medley of both Gaga and Madonna. With live vocals and backup dancers perfectly exemplifying the Gaga aesthetic it was a no-brainer, despite the quality of all the acts. The ultra-gay theme, Lady Gaga vs. Madonna, produced a host of great performances starting with judges, including winner of last month, Bulimianne Rhapsody, who performed her own rendition of Paparrazzi instead praising the joys of wino-loving Carlo-Rossi. Continue reading »   D'Lo Every bit as hot and talented as fellow Tamil MIA, political theatre artist/writer and music producer D’Lo unleashes his spoken word and hip hop act on the students on Reed tonight at 7pm in the campus chapel and tomorrow in Winch Hall at 1pm for a workshop. With an interesting combination of pure Los Angeles street knowledge and a BA from UCLA in Ethnomusicology and a graduate of New York’s School of Audio Engineering, D’Lo brings important political and ideological discussions to a genre that needs an infusion of the genuine. This “…hella well-rounded G” tries to explain his synthesis of the disparate by saying, Continue reading »   Heather Cassils Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s “Telephone” music video, epic for both its overabundance of pop culture reference as well as its 9 minute running time, has officially reached 1 billion internet viewings but many of those eyes were focused on the very queer intro, featuring genderqueer stripping, kissing and dubious acting in the County Jail, Prison for Bitches. The most interesting interaction during this extended intro comes from relative unknown bodybuilder and performance artist Heather Cassils, who has no qualms about sitting herself next to Gaga and capturing her in a naughty embrace. But Cassils is better at more than just making out. The Los Angeles based personal trainer and performance artist is fascinating for her ideas on art, gender, popular culture. Here are some of her answers to the most pressing questions of her wide-eyed watchers including upcoming projects, perspective her own personal gender identity, and presentation, and even a glance into her love life. Some of the most memorable shows in my La Luna-laden high school experiences were the ones featuring uber-dyke band Tribe 8. They were punk-as-f*ck and gave off so much energy my teenage heart nearly exploded. Alas now the 90s are gone and I am grown. So too have the members of Tribe 8 grown into more complex artists than they were before.
