DJ Alicious
qPDX is starting a new feature! Every week we will introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.
First on the docket is DJ Alicious, most known for Crave, Doll House and other Mirage Entertainment productions. You can catch her this Saturday at their Doll House farewell at Hamburger Mary’s.
When and how did you get started DJing?
Music has always been a huge passion of mine. I used to sit in my bedroom for hours on end as a little kid and craft what I would consider to be the perfect mix tapes! As I got older, I would be the go to person for music. In college I hosted many parties and always provided the music. As for getting started professionally, I officially started deejaying back in February, 2010 for Crave’s “Gold Masquerade Party”. I have continued to spin for every Crave since then. It’s so exciting to be a contributing factor in making people dance, smile, and have a good time =)

Portlandia: sexy, geeky, gay. Promiscuity was a dream of the 90s wasn't it?
Ok Cupid is a dating site that has love for not only the gays, lesbians and tragically hip but also for the stats and geekery (see: tragically hip) and they have just named Portland, a lover of all those things as well, the most promiscuous city in the USA. So I guess we “love” each other a lot as well with Time magazine calling us “Oversexed Oregon.” In general the “liberal media” was more congratulatory than chastising and the Huffington Post has some great cityscapes of the winners as well as sex-related infographics (talk about hipster geekdom), and the Village Voice was just jealous.

Crave producers MJ (L) and DJ Alicious at last year's Glow party. Photo by OSI Photography.
Thursday
SugarTown Ice Cream Soul-cial – Last month’s very first ST was a sweet sweet success. Despite the sound trouble early on this celebration of sweetness and soul left a pleasant taste on everyone’s tongue. The music was fun and a nice respite from the usual club fare, the sweet treats for sale were cheap and delicious and there were just enough people to create plenty of opportunities mingle and dance without that claustrophobic and intense heat sometimes generated by popular nights. Sweet Thursday perfection. *
Friday
Crave presents “Glow” – Crave’s annual black light party is always a messy success. And as the creators are moving on to that bigger glow stick coast city Los Angeles, it might also be your last chance to feel the dark light love. This is your chance to relive your raver days or revel in what you missed for those of you in your 20s. But get there early cuz this tiny space fills up fast with females, and besides, they have killer drink specials before 10. *

Little Tommy with one of this weekend's hosts ChiChi
In case you haven’t heard former Tuesday show, Peep Show, outgrew it’s weekday shortpants and has moved to a coveted Friday slot because it’s so damn good. qPDX took a minute to sit down with one of the show’s producers Little Tommy Bang Bang so find out some of the dirt behind the move and catch a glimpse of what might be in store for us this Friday.
qpdx: So what prompted the move to Fridays? I assume it has gotten quite popular. Were there other reasons?
LTBB: The reason for the move to Fridays is simply that we outgrew Tuesdays. After over a year of successful “first Tuesday” shows, the Red Cap agreed to let us have a better night for our show. Keeping in the Portland tradition of monthly events, we are now officially booked for “third Fridays”.

Darcelle, aka Walter Cole, in and out of drag. Photos from KGW.
Sorry for getting this news out to y’all a little late but I was out of commish all weekend. However, last Thursday night 80-year-old drag performer (and Portland institution) Darcelle, also known as Walter Cole, was arrested for allegedly assaulting two Oregon Liquor Control Commission officers. Although the charges have since been dropped an investigation into whether the club Darcelle XV, has been serving minors, is still under investigation.

I totally got this picture of Melody Awesomazing off Facebook.
OMG, I am so ready. The video below is just the preview and I’m already laughing my ass off. You know me, I tend to be verbose and want to comment on everything but this pretty much takes my speech breath (and, um, typing I guess?) away. I mean I don’t really know what to say about the new Melody Awesomazing Facebook talk show except, it’s awesome…awesomazing. SO thanks to Melody and co-producer Anthony Hudson.

Bacon Salt man at last year's Portland Baconfest. 2011 version takes place this Saturday on E Burnside
Thursday
Q center open house – Come say hi to the new Executive Director, Barbara McCullough-Jones while you check out featured art on the history of Portland drag from photographer Greg Pitts.
Kerry Hallet @ Alberta Pub – The pub may be eclipsed by its newer hipster neighbors across the street but it’s still got amazing fries and damn good acoustic music sets, like this one by local Kerry Hallet.
Friday
Bent featuring Jeau Breedlove – This months gay ass dance party up north features the homo hop stylings of Jeau Breedlove. The name will probably get old quickly but I heard the cat at the Queer Music Fest the rhymes are pretty dope.
