Red Dress pics

We here at qPDX were not able to attend the season’s reddest fundraiser of the year, but tons of pictures were taken of 2010’s RedRum themed Red Dress. Just Out’s Marty Davis has a Red Dress Gallery 1 and 2. Local gossip blogger Byron Beck also has almost 200 images of the rouge frocks. And […]

A weekend for ladies, menz, and everything in between

Tahoe Jackson will perform Saturday at the Red Dress fundraiser. Photo by Wayne Bund

This beautiful spring day has all the local queers riled up and ready to mingle. And we have many opportunities to do so. The weekend kicks off tomorrow not only with the Tranny Roadshow but with Crave for the ladies Menz Room and Red Cap’s official Red Dress Pre-Party for the dudes, and Cuda Cabaret for the artfags.

The qPDX sponsored Crave brings the ladybeat back to Crush (1400 SE Morrison) with a Purple Rain theme that will have your doves crying and your feet dancing. DJs Alicious and Boy return to the decks with some 1999 love for your dripping purple heart. Oh and did I mention that Go Go Girls will bring out squirt guns to get the sweaty crowd into the wet, rainy spirit?

Husky boys clothing swap and Bear Bowl

You wouldn't believe how tough it is to find pictures of famous fashionable fat men...

This month’s video podcast features plus size fashion shop Fat Fancy and the trend is quickly taking hold of the Rose City. But men, dykes, and masculine identified individuals of all sorts are also getting into the fashion game. And though there is some men’s duds at the FF plus sized gentlemen still have few options besides the big and tall section of the Men’s Warehouse.

This Thursday begins concocting the remedy with the Husky Clothing Swap / Bear Bowl at Interstate Lanes (6049 North Interstate Ave) starting at 6:30pm.

Photos and recap from the Winter Gala

After interviewing Kendall Clawson about the details of the 2nd annual Q Center Winter Gala, I just had to go check out the event myself. My girlfriend and I scrounged our closet and multiple thrifts stores in efforts to find outfits suitable to wear to a black tie affair. It was a daunting task considering my part of the closet consists mostly of converse and tattered t-shirts, but it all worked out nicely in the end and we enjoyed an exceptional night out on the town. Take a peak into the event with our Winter Gala photo gallery. (All photos taken by Ashley Bedford).

Was it all it was cracked up to be? Basically! Everything was gorgeous, and yes, extremely glittery. The 6th floor of the Nines hotel was packed with fabulous looking, borderline-celebrity queers and political figures, all who had jazzy cocktails in hand. The VIP room (which I tried to sneak into but was reminded by my virtuous girlfriend that that wasn’t the best idea) looked abuzz and downright fun.

A Third Sex reunion show with The Haggard and Kaia Wilson

The Third Sex from their 7" "Mombies" cover

Anyone who is roughly my age and experienced Portland at the height of its dyke rock 90s knows the The Third Sex. Indeed my newly out 14 year old self swooned over the dreamy screamy vocals of Trish Walsh and Peyton Marshall.

For most of the length of their pop punk career I snapped photos, carried around around one of their 2 CDs in my Discman, and, eventually, played a show with them. Commemorated by their track “Maul 10.09.97″ on Back to Go, a final show at a tiny club on 14th and Alberta, back then not the gentrified arts magnet it is now, was one of the most emblematic, not to mention punk rock, Third Sex memories. And this tiny club, with leaking ceiling and cramped stage felt like the beginning of the end of an era.

Sunday night, that era will live again at Rotture (315 SE 3rd Ave).

Conversations from the Gayborhood

Kendall Clawson, executive director of the Q center, has been referred to as Gay-prah—aka the gay Oprah—by Portland gossip extraordinaire Byron Beck. After meeting her myself in her cozy corner office at the Q, I am compelled to second that notion….to an extent.

Without a doubt, she radiates an Oprah-esque charisma, resolve and allure. But the conceitedness and ostentation? It just doesn’t exist in Clawson, whose primary concern is the LGBT community, not her own self-interest. The minute I met her, I suspected I would spend the next hour of my time doing two things: laughing and learning. And I wasn’t let down.

My chat with Clawson was so rich with info that I’ve divided the interview into two parts. This week, Clawson talks with me about the Winter Gala (pronounced GAY-la for this occasion), her favorite Portland personalities, and which character she would date from the L word.

The last Fruitcake ever is tonight

DJ Nolita is leaving us!

We all knew that Fruitcake was struggling when it lost its Northeast Portland venue to the lures of medical marijuana, but the final death throes came when founder DJ Nolita announced she was leaving Portland for the wide open sea of San Fran. Not only will she be missed, but so will the insiders night that quickly became a Nopo favorite. Our only consolation? A grand farewell tonight at Portsmouth Pizza (5264 N Lombard).

Queers and local organizations respond to catastrophe in Haiti

Please support our brothers and sisters in Haiti!

Please support our brothers and sisters in Haiti!

After Pat Robertson degraded himself even further by referring to Haitians as being “cursed” after entering a “pact with the devil” responses are pouring forth in support of Haiti and in opposition to religious wankers like Pat Robertson.
Also, many websites and organizations are offering opportunities to donate money and support Haitian rescue efforts, some of them local, and some of them LGBTQ specific. Please donate – these people need our help.A massive 7.2 earthquake has virtually destroyed Haiti, leaving thousands dead and missing.
