Looks like Portland has lost its ability to boast the largest city with a gay mayor. In a fairly conservative Houston, Texas city controller and openly lesbian Annise Parker was elected Mayor this Saturday night.

Though this news has a lot to do with a fellow Democratic competitor, it is still quite exciting and surprising. Parker also seems to have a sense of humor about it, bragging that she was the first graduate of Rice University to be elected mayor (and indeed she is) before continuing on to serious topics in her acceptance speech.

Lady Gaga’s Barbara Walters interview

barbara-walters-lady-gaga

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (L) aka Lady Gaga with Barbara Walters

I know that probably too much space is devoted in this blog to Lady Gaga but she is my favorite artist and musician right now (she’s so hot right now), she’s incredibly talented and envelope-pushing and she’s absolutely forthright in her interview with Barbara Walters. Sot it’s worth showing here.

Highlights include openly admitting bisexuality, feeling like a freak as a child, and wanting to be an inspiration to fans and young people, even if she doesn’t fit the role model mold.

str8 cologne an issue of h8 or just annoying?

It's the only way, apparently

STR8's the only way, apparently

A brand of cologne called “STR8” as been fluttering around the internet for a little while – complete with seemingly homophobic tagline: “STR8. There’s no other way”

What is this? The work of another group of religious nuts? Scientology side-income? No – seems like a hungarian/polish perfume company making a quick buck on the back of good-old american wistfulness for the great beyond.

World AIDS day candlelight vigil and events

widTomorrow’s many activities mark the 21st Annual World AIDS Day, a time to recognize not only the 25 million individuals lost to HIV and AIDS, but the 33 million global citizens living with the HIV virus today. World AIDS Day Portland lists numerous stories, resources, events and workshops happening throughout the day and for the next week.

Through this campaign, we envision hundreds of groups – from schools to community-based organizations – to mobilize short actions, events, or campaigns all over the Portland-metropolitan area to raise awareness for 21st Annual World AIDS Day.
