Pro soccer player, David Testo comes out publicly

Major league soccer player David Testo came out publicly this week

The latest news in the intersectional world of queer people and sports is that American soccer player David Testo has come out. Testo played D1 college soccer at the University of North Carolina as well as at the University of South Carolina, and has played in the NASL and USL (lower-level pro leagues) and in MLS.

After being released from the Montreal Impact about a month ago, Testo publicly came out. He was already out to his friends and family as well as to his teammates and coaches.

Testo’s coming out is kind of a big deal for a lot of reasons.

A weekend of art and music with lesbian softball stories, Fruitillion, the Bathers, Tender Forever, Mattachine and more

Wayne Bund's photo series 'The Bathers' opens Saturday at East End

Check back for our preview of Siren Nation festival, which will encompass the entirety of the weekend. As if you didn’t have enough to work with below.

Thursday

Thursday may not see a whole bunch of new nights but there’s always the stellar, incredibly danceable and Smiths-loving Dirtbag! at the Know (with special guest DJ Ill Camino) and the mellower Bobby Jo Valentine just down Alberta street making his Portland debut and the popular St Johns Thursday night gay hangout Sweet Tea where you can drink in southern style for only 4 bucks.

Friday

Deep Cuts – Only in its second iteration, DP has already become a music conisseurs good time. Good music without pretentiousness this party is hip and fun without being the kind of hip and fun that makes you uncomfortable, nervous and…no fun. I think that’s proved well enough by this week’s DJ of the Week, which profiles Cuts’ special guest DJ L-Train.

Soccer hottie Hope Solo poses nude for the ESPN body issue (photos AND video)

Hope Solo poses nude for the ESPN Magazine Body issue out today

I may not be much of a sports buff, but when jock ladies are actually in the buff that’s a while different matter. And actually I’m riding the wave of women’s soccer enthusiasm too, just because we kick so much ass. So I may be a sports fan yet. It certainly helps when America’s favorite (lesbian, though not officially out I suppose, though I get so tired of the distinction when they’re really pretty much out) goalie, Hope Solo, poses naked for ESPN.

Solo is one of 22 athletes featured in ESPN The Magazine’s third-annual Body Issue, on stands today. She is currently in the spotlight on two fronts,  starting goal keeper for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team and current competitor in this season’s Dancing with the Stars on ABC. Who do we root for? Chaz or Hope?! Oh, the important questions in life. Well, the shallow part in me definitely says Hope after seeing these shots…

This weekend Touch Your Woman, be it with shopping, soccer, drag, music or Blow Pony

Soccer stars Abby Wambach (L) and Hope Solo of Team Lez (I mean USA)

Thursday

Momma’s Boyz | Kaylah Marin – The wide base of Bay area drag king competition leaves room for some breadth. So expect a nice dip into some old school hip hop and an urban vibe. And forget the usual lip syncing role. These Mommas Boyz belt it out of their own mouths. Add in guest San Francisco House Music Phenom, DJ Gstar and you’ve got yourselves a party.

US Womens National Soccer Team vs Canada – Did you see that Women’s World Cup Final that we so narrowly lost to Japan? It was the best game we could have lost. No one could begrudge the earthquake/tsunami ravaged country their victory but the USA played a truly incredible game. I am by no means a jock but I was glued to my live ESPN 3 stream (me and the Obamas) for every amazing second of Abby Wambach head-butting it in or Hope Solo diving for the save. So when these ladies, some lesbians some not, come to town you better believe the ladies, football fans and anyone than cares about international sports is going to be at this game. It’s practically inconsequential who the US team is playing against. This is basically a victory lap, a chance to see our stars in action, and ample opportunity for Team USA to get laid.

Rose City Open XXI

The U.S. Open may be in New York, but here in PDX we have our own annual tennis tournament — the Rose City Open. The RCO has a few things going for it that the U.S Open does not — 1. It’s gay! An entity of Team Portland Tennis, an lgbt tennis organization here in town, to be specific. 2. It’s for a great cause! All proceeds from the […]

This weekend it’s time to be a Hot Mess as you say goodbye to Doll House and indulge in (Del Shores) Sordid Confessions

Del Shores shares all his 'Sordid Confessions' Sunday at Red Cap

Thursday

Hot mess talent contest – The first week of the up-and-coming local talent competition. Can we beat Tyra in snarkiness or Simon Cowell in cruelty? Well it’s time to find out.

Streateaters, Mishaps, Fucking Lesbian Bitches – Goddamn dyke punk ok?

The Cafeteria – Summer school’s in session so it’ll be all the bad girls and boys in class this week…

Slutwalkers, link arms and head down to Sugar Town, a jock auction, a porch parlor, and the waiting arms of Lady Bunny this weekend

The infamous Lady Bunny performs Friday at Red Cap

Thursday

Sugar Town queer soul night – Rotture’s soul night has become a staple in Portland nightlife both gay and straight. But as with many popular nights the douchebags inevitably catch on, and it can be even worse at a “straight” night. I’m not sure if this happened to the beloved soul night, but it was time for us to have our own anyway (Pansy Soul is great but Sloan’s is more for hanging out than dancing). Anyway, all of this to say I’m more than a little excited that one of the best dressed butchies I have ever seen, DJ Action Slacks, will lead us all in a little soulful 70s love starting this Thursday, and hopefully forever more. It’s free but donations for Q Patrol are welcomed.

Cafeteria turns 1 – Oh my god Freshman year is over! Now we can give swirlies to all the new queer club nights in town. And guest DJ Girlfriends will be spinnin’ in your parents’ back yard (i.e. the Vendetta patio) ’til 11, just like at the popular kids’ parties. We’ve made it folks. Sophomore year is gonna rule.

PSU’s Sherri Murrell sets an example for gay coaches and athletes

As we’ve mentioned here before, high-level athletes and team personnel have been coming out more and more lately. While this is of course great news (understatement), it’s hard not to notice that basically all of the stories we’ve been hearing are about dudes.

On the flip side of that, we have a true pioneer in terms of queer women in sport right here in Portland. Sherri Murrell, the head coach of PSU’s women’s basketball team, is the only openly gay division 1 basketball coach in the country. The Oregonian ran a profile of Murrell earlier in the week — front page, above the fold. It’s a great article, but it would be even greater if being gay and having a successful sports career didn’t constitute major news.

A Snarky(er) recap of the Womens World Cup

Abby Wambach gets the second point for the USA with her head in yesterday's Women's World Cup final

Most people will tell you I’m not much of a sports person, and watching on TV rather than playing or watching in person even less. But I watched yesterday’s Women’s World Cup from beginning to end in rapt attention, as evidenced by my play-by-play tweeting. It was a ridiculously exciting game, and even though we lost we played like champs and no one can begrudge tsunami ravaged Japan their victory celebration.

As for USA players, early scorer and youngest team member Alex Morgan was a star and lesbian (though not officially out, but not particularly closeted either) Abby Wambach, who scored our second goal with her head, was the player to watch. Indeed, I know you’re all search for the picture of her head-butting it in, so I’ve included it here.
