‘Queer Gaze’ photography exhibition at Fontanelle

queer-gaze

Work by Amos Mac

Every Women’s Studies 101 class had to read that Laura Mulvey article on the cinematic “male gaze” which described voyeurism and objectification of a female by a heterosexual male viewer. And then Cindy Sherman turned the theory of the gaze on its ear with her “Untitled Film Stills” and other eclectic self-portraiture.

Now Queer Gaze opening Thursday at Fontanelle Gallery (205 SW Pine) aims to explore the gaze from woman to woman or queer to queer, as well as the way that many photographers use their own visage or that of their friends to subvert traditional expectations of portraiture.

The Gossip

The excitement was palpable when Southerners turned Portlanders The Gossip started to really make it big with their last release Standing in the Way of Control. It’s hard to believe that was three years ago. In the interim frontwoman Beth Ditto has become a spokeswoman for chub love and queer rights and culture, appeared naked on the cover of two magazines, started her own plus-size clothing line, and in general burst onto the international stage as a powerful, innovative and inspirational rock goddess.

With this year’s release of Music for Men there is no doubt that the world is has heard the bold and beautiful voice of Ditto and is responding in a big way. Saturday they bring the sound home for those of us who have been appreciating the no-nonsense flamboyancy for a decade.

qPDX on gaycation

team-dresch

Team Dresch

I hate to do this to you folks. I’ve been a bit frantic of late in general, my co-editor has become entrenched in the wilds of Reed College and the newbies are most certainly not yet up to speed. And yet, this is the time I choose to leave you, unattended, for 10 whole days. Now behave while I am away, and I will try to post little bits of my gaycation ephemera but who knows when I will see an internet cafe in the wilds of the jungle. So I make no promises.
