Another take on the disturbing brief that was issued by the US Department of Justice in support of DOMA. It compares same-sex marriage to ” marriages between cousins or an uncle and a niece” and that as a result, they do not have to be recognized.
Rachel Maddow commented on this in her show, and you can watch it here.

 SuperGay stampedes for Rainbow Truth
Wow, thats all I can say. Wow 1: I can still come up with a meaningful alliteration after this weekend, and wow 2: Portland Queer Pride 2009 was AMAZING.
A year of firsts: The first time QPDX.com has had their own parade “float”, the first year there has been 110+ groups in the parade, the first time SuperGay had a proper outfit, the first time I decided to go for FIVE straight days of Pride partying.
Five days. Five outfits. A kajillion drinks, a million miles on my bicycle, a shit ton of parties, SuperGay jumps, fake beards, hair dying extravaganzas, automation-style condom gluing, flyering, banner making, gender bendering, raindbow deco-ing stampede of gayness. But sadly, on the edge of all the celebrations: tinges of violences, aggression, and disrespect by the police. I’m still waiting for the dust to settle.

Sam Adams' bike contingent at Pride 2009
Now that we are all finally recovered from our hangovers it’s time to reflect on the weekend. It was a wild success that saw the gorgeous Miss Sabel Scities win Portland’s Drag Race, 115 floats, thousands of attendees, very few protesters and about a million parties.
Below are my weekend highlights but we really want to hear yours, so comment below!

Obama – Don't support the DOMA. Equality for queer people NOW
Well…
Backto reality. The comedown is here, personal and political, small scale and large scale. While we are still dealing with the shambles left behind of a fantastic Pride, we are also hearing about gay bashings of queer/trans people here in our fair city and community. And now this- it seems that the Obama administration may be […]
Chastity Bono, who has been out as a lesbian for almost two decades, announces their gender transition. Photo from WireImage/FilmMagic
Just in! A few news sources across the web are reporting that Chastity Bono, long known to friends and family as ‘Chaz’ has decided to start tranisitioning from female to male. Go Chaz! I applaud Chaz’ decision to be honest and to transition – especially in the public eye. (And Cher’s their MOTHER, for crying out loud).

Barbara Walters pictured with Thomas Beatie and his baby daughter Susan Juliette, in November 2008.
Once a headline sensation, Thomas Beatie, the “pregnant man” just had his second child yesterday, and the headlines are nearly buried amidst Pride fervor.
From ABC news:

I have never been a huge military fan myself and have often viewed the unfair “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy as one of the only ways queer lives are safeguarded. But this cheeky attitude is hardly effective in the real world wherein many LGBT individuals wish to serve this country and lead successful military careers openly.

The Portland Trans March, which previously marched alongside the DykeMarch as part of Pride is moving in a different direction and emphasizes this with a name change: The Trans March is now “Gender (Free) For All”, and the march will be taking place on August 1st, outside of Pride.
PDX Trans March changes name, concept to "Gender (Free) For All"
Gender (Free) For All has just launched their […]
As a queer person, and as an immigrant into what is widely known as the “toughest country to get in to” in the world, I am constantly reminded of the inequality people face in this country who are involved in binational same-sex couples.I don’t have a Green Card, I am not allowed to work, I receive no government support, I am constant danger of my visa being revoked. As a student, I am forced to pay extortionate out of state tuition that is three times that of in-state tuition, and even if I were in a committed long term relationship, I would not be able to get a green card through my partner. I am actively discriminated against because of both my citizenship and my sexuality.

Racist, biphobic, inflammatory stickers found on TriMet. Thank you to Keller Henry for this photo.
Just in: Keller Henry, a Portland resident and TriMet user, took a quick snapshot of a sticker found on TriMet.
My thoughts are all in a jumble about this, but I will try and make sense of it the best I can. I am a white, queer European who has been an anti-facist and anti-racist activist since I was a teen. And I love Portland. I love this city. I care about this city, and I care about the things I see on bus stops.
