A couple of queer video game tidbits

Though I have an entire category dedicated to geeky things not limited to sci fi, technology, comics, video games etc, I don’t get to cover it nearly enough. This is a shame since I’m a pretty out nerd myself. So today I just want to clue you in to two bits of gay gamer news and up the geek cred of this site.

Mass Effect 3's Commander Shepard

Firstly, a new choose your own adventure called Mass Effect 3, has given the player both homo and hetero love options for the main character Commander Shepard, including a  kiss in a nightclub and a topless bedroom scene. You can check them both out below.

The game’s developers told Kotaku that it’s not a political statement, but as part of a role playing game, it makes sense for gamers to choose their character’s sexual orientation.

Ray Muzyka co-founder of Mass Effect studio BioWare, also said, “We let players take on a role and really immerse themselves on how they feel they want to be playing the game. Be true to that. Be true to your ideal of a game of choice.” Fellow BioWare founder Greg Zeschuk added, “If there’s a political bent to it, it’s very Libertarian. It’s like… yeah, we make the choices available. You decide what you want to do. We’re not pushing any particular direction with most of our stuff.”

2 Girls, 1 Podcast ep#13 talks with Glitterfruit’s Max Voltage

This week Lyska and I talk to Max Voltage of Glitterfruit and Pants Off Productions (the folks behind Homomentum, Homo’s Got Talent etc) who will be performing at a free, all ages concert for the culmination of the 31st annual Lewis and Clark Gender Studies Symposium. […]

Lewis and Clark brings its Gender Studies Symposium for a 31st time around

For those of us no longer ensconced in the world of academia but who want the opportunity to have thought-provoking discussions on gender and sexuality the annual Lewis and Clark Gender Studies Symposium is the perfect opportunity. This three day exploration, now in its 31st year (whoa, that’s a long time, longer than I’ve been alive) takes place this Wednesday through Friday. (Complete schedule linked below)

The 2012 […]

Technology companies support gay marriage

Several corporations signed on to support Washington's recent passage of gay marriage

Attitudes toward gay marriage have rapidly progressed in the last two decades, especially on the U.S. West Coast. Since the majority of large-scale American technology companies are headquartered in California and Washington, CEOs and other corporate leaders in that industry have acclimated to the trends. Today, software giants like Microsoft, Amazon and Apple are loudly voicing their support for equal marriage rights.

Same-sex marriage has been a newsworthy issue since 1996, when the Republican-led U.S. Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), legally defining “marriage” as a union between a man and woman. The following decade witnessed a shift in public perception of gay marriage, particularly on the relatively liberal Pacific Coast—though, the movement yielded few legislative changes. Instead, courts continued to reinforce the theory that same-sex marriage was unnatural and unconstitutional, in such federal cases as Citizens for Equal Protection vs. Bruning (2005). Those interested in learning more about this case should consider exploring this site for online universities where they can learn more about human and civil rights cases in our nation’s history.

Apple introduces iPhone 4S

So, all of us geekoids were glued to our live gdgt feeds today (apparently it was the only one that didn’t crash) to watch the saga of Apple’s “Let’s Talk iPhone” announcement unfold. Now in the several years I’ve been writing this blog I have followed pretty much every excitable Cupertino announcement, but I have never written about any. I figured tech geeks are so all over it there’s no point in coming here. So why now?

  1. I’m not really going to do much of the covering myself. I’ve been inspired by meeting a few other queer tech bloggers so I’m totally going to link to them. Woohoo!
  2. The new CEO of Apple is a big ol’ power gay, Tim Cook. This was his first keynote as CEO. @ouroboring and I even had a conversation on Twitter during the event commenting on those fancy Swatch-esque watch functions for the iPod Nano wherein she said: “@qpdx yeah! now officially endorsed by Tim Cook, Powergay.” So yeah, perfect opportunity to highlight powerful ‘mos, talk fashion, and promote my Twitter feed all at once.

Ok Cupid names Portland the most promiscuous city

Portlandia: sexy, geeky, gay. Promiscuity was a dream of the 90s wasn't it?

Ok Cupid is a dating site that has love for not only the gays, lesbians and tragically hip but also for the stats and geekery (see: tragically hip) and they have just named Portland, a lover of all those things as well, the most promiscuous city in the USA. So I guess we “love” each other a lot as well with Time magazine calling us “Oversexed Oregon.” In general the “liberal media” was more congratulatory than chastising and the Huffington Post has some great cityscapes of the winners as well as sex-related infographics (talk about hipster geekdom), and the Village Voice was just jealous.

Wuvable Oaf gay bear comic creator in Portland tonight

Creator Ed Luce in front of his oafy posters and products

I love geeky stuff and yet feel like I don’t get to combine, let alone report on, the intersection of queerness and geekery enough. So, though it’s last minute, I’m pretty excited to blog about this graphic novel creator I found randomly on Queerty this morning.

Ed Luce pens Wuvable Oaf, the story of a “gay, cat-obsessed, Morrissey-loving, hairy giant.” Queerty goes on to say this about the character:

A whole lotta dancin’ this weekend with the likes of Cock Block, LA Kendall, Notorious Neon, Bearracuda’s 2 year anniversary and more

Seattle's LA Kendall will make a PDX appearance Friday at Bent

Thursday

Sweet Tea – Sounds like the perfect summer refresher for those St Johns gays.

Dirtbag! – Your stellar dance party with the Smiths happy ending (is that an oxymoron?) takes up residence at my favorite Alberta dive once again.

Friday

Bent with special guests – Lifepartner will be at the decks along with Seattle superstar LA Kendall who rocks not just the dance floor but the business end, booking successful parties and performers alike. She’s also a producer/performer in her own right as one half of electro-pop-raptresses Luxury A.K. Bent is always a good time but this one will be a night to remember (or, perhaps, forget…).

Gaga marketing trades Target for FarmVille

When I got this press release in my inbox I thought, at first, it was a spoof from The Onion or something. Not so. Glitter and glamor will, indeed, be coming to your virtual farm. I don’t really know what to say. But my mom will be happy…they’re two of her favorite things…

Anyway, I just thought this was too weird not to share:

Lady Gaga and Zynga today announced a partnership to launch the mega-artist’s new album Born this Way. Launching May 17, the first-of-its-kind program gives “little monsters” throughout the world a first listen to exclusive un-released songs from the upcoming album when they visit GagaVille, a uniquely designed neighboring farm in FarmVille (There will be unicorns and crystals. Enough said.).
