When I see cupcakes and donuts at a size-positive event the stereotype occasionally makes me cringe. But then at about midnight I get the munchies and am super stoked that I don’t have to make my ride stop at a bad 24 hour fast food joint to satisfy my drunken cravings. Indeed, this measure of skepticism, relief and fun were a good characturization of the first ‘Bounce.’

A night of fashion and frivolity, Circus Smyrcus and men’s underwear

A couple of really great events almost snuck by our radar! But we queers can roll with the punches so whether part of the younger crew or the “grown-ups” we’ve got lots for you to do tonight.

circus-smyrcusSMYRC hosts its annual Queer and Trans Youth prom tonight, Circus Smyrcus, at the (for now) SMYRC headquarters (2100 SE Belmont). The alcohol and tobacco free event for the Q set between the ages of 14 and 23, takes place tonight from 8 to midnight and will feature the music stylings of DJ Tara, free food and raffle prizes. And unlike your typical suburban high school you don’t need to buy overpriced, couple-centric tickets cuz this party is free.

Video promo for this weekend’s Strut fashion show

Although they could have culled the 3 minute promo to a more svelte minute or minute-thirty the promo for this weekend’s Strut fashion show, a benefit for Basic Rights Oregon takign place at Luxe Autohaus (410 NE 17th) this Saturday May 16th at 7pm, is still worth watching.

And, according to Byron Beck, RuPaul’s Drag Race: Portland Edition contestants will be “competing” following the the catwalk fest:

weekend’s almost over…but one big event yet to come!

And it’s time for a little half time recap. (well, technically a 2/3rds time recap, but who cares, right?) It’s been a busy few days indeed!

Kick / Ball / Change @ The Someday Lounge

Kick / Ball / Change @ The Someday Lounge

Thursday saw me hit RedCap for a little update on RuPaul’s drag race, which I have been checking in with since my first review, which you can find here. The Portland edition doesn’t have eliminations, so all the girls were still in the race-and had the task of choreographing a dance number to RuPaul’s own “Supermodel” (yes that super gay dance number from the early 90’s). Overall, both teams did well, but Team Alexis sadly took a wrong turn on the costume front, picking lavender onesies that were not flattering at all. Also, their choreo was messy. I had expected more from Alexis. Team Kelly stole the Lipsynch For Your Life trophy with excellent dresses, makeup, and teamwork. Their choreo was sometimes a little flat, but overall well done. Sable Scities is most definitely the strongest dancer in the group, and stands a strong chance of walking away with the prize of being the Northwest’ Fiercest Drag Queen if she can keep up the pace. A great show, with the usual witty banter between Poison Waters and Byron Beck. Sadly, Isiah from Burlesquire should stick to what he does best (and he really does do it very well) – Dancing. Being a commentator or a judge is not your strong point, Isiah.

Red Dress party pics

Unfortunately, once again qPDX was unable to attend one of the it parties of the year, The Red Dress soiree which hosted its “Red Eye” themed soiree last Saturday. Luckily, over 2000 clad in in red gowns were in attendance at the benefit for those living with HIV and AIDS.

From fellow local blogger Byron Beck:

Last year’s RDP was more of a political meet and greet (perhaps that had to do with the fact Chelsea Clinton crashed the soiree), but this year’s party seemed to go back to its roots as a literally balls-to-the-wall blow-out of drunken debauchery (thank god).

kegs, rugby and vagina wigs (a women’s rugby review)

Oy. I am definitely still in recovery mode from my stellar weekend at Maggotfest, the  annual rugby festival in Missoula, Montana. In a 72 hour period, I spent over 18 hours in a car as the gracious DD to a wild and crazy group of ruggers. The drinking started in the car on Friday and didn’t end until we got back into the car Sunday afternoon.

rugby girls know how to get down.

Maggotfest, my friends, is serious business. Serious drinking, costumes, nudity, ridiculousness, and rugby. Ok, so the rugby part isn’t that serious, but it is there–there are actual referees and real teams* and at the end of every game, there is only one winner.

This was my red dress party. Unlike red dress, most of the gay folks at Maggotfest were ladies who could ruck, maul and scrum it like a rockstar. I would argue that Maggotfest was clearly where it was at. It was–in a word–epic.

Facebook rejects lesbian film ad

Like many of you, i’m a facebook addict. I never really got into myspace as much as many did, but I really love facebook. It’s less cluttered than myspace. It’s easy to use. It’s easy to find people.  All my friends are on it. Squabbles over changes in the user agreement aside, and no, I don’t like the new format either, Facebook is still a great marketing/networking tool (and a bit of a timesuck). But this here issue is something that made me pay attention. Apparently, it seems, Facebook has a rejected an ad deemed “too racy” despite the fact that the creators claim many other ads on FB are a lot racier. Is the ad being targetted for being “too gay”? Is FB turning homophobic? Will this be the next AmazonFail?

From the switched.com:

Facebook Rejects Lesbian Film Ad

Facebook Rejects Lesbian Film Ad

We’re not gonna deny that the advertisement to the right would certainly be described as “sexy,” but it’s hardly lewd or inappropriate. So why exactly did Facebook reject this ad for ‘And Then Came Lola,’ a film targeted at a lesbian audience?

Gay monks behaving badly?

Not really a Portland issue per se, but this article about gay monks in thailand being reprimanded for wearing tight clothes and having flamboyant eyebrows made me laugh…

From the BBC website:

A Buddhist preacher in Thailand has announced plans for new guidelines aimed at curbing the flamboyant behaviour of gay and transgender monks.

The “good manners” curriculum – the country’s first – is being introduced in the […]

From Oprah / CNN: Why women are leaving men for women

I just stumbled across this interesting article on why, it seems, apparently, that women are leaving men to pursue relationships with women. Personally, I think this isn’t anything new (insert reference to historical celebrity here) but what definitely seems to be changing is the way the media is dealing with celebrities getting imto homolicious relationships. After the first shock, for example, it seemed that the paps were focusing more […]

Meet me in my beater.

Lately I’ve been munching my way through interesting conversations with straight men calling about my 1980 Datsun 210 wagon for sale. Sometimes the questions about the car become questions about me. “I’m assuming that your husband has a car, too?” “You sound cute. I didn’t realize that you were so young.” Today’s conversation ends with his vadude magnetgue whispery words telling me to call him if I feel like it. It feels like this isn’t even about the car anymore. He’s not even that into my car. My car that looks to me like a Birkenstock and Carhart wearing dykemobile. The sort of thing that one would pack with smelly lesbos and drive to clothing-optional hot springs and women’s music festivals. It is decorated with bumperstickers that say “keep Portland weird” “No on 8” and “well-behaved women rarely make history” for goshsakes. I might as well have a bumpersticker that says “smash patriarchy with me and my hella hella gay friends.”
