Afresh with new album The Gossip returns to Portland Saturday

The Gossip

The excitement was palpable when Southerners turned Portlanders The Gossip started to really make it big with their last release Standing in the Way of Control. It’s hard to believe that was three years ago. In the interim frontwoman Beth Ditto has become a spokeswoman for chub love and queer rights and culture, appeared naked on the cover of two magazines, started her own plus-size clothing line, and in general burst onto the international stage as a powerful, innovative and inspirational rock goddess.

With this year’s release of Music for Men there is no doubt that the world is has heard the bold and beautiful voice of Ditto and is responding in a big way. Saturday they bring the sound home for those of us who have been appreciating the no-nonsense flamboyancy for a decade.

‘Original Plumbing’ inaugural issue showcases FTM sexuality and culture

op

Editors Amos Mac (L) and Rocco Kayiatos pose with the first issue or 'Original Plumbing'

Lesbians used to have On Our Backs and gay men have Butt. Now, Original Plumbing, a “quarterly photo and interview-saturated magazine dedicated to the culture and sexuality of FTM transsexuals” is the new Playboy for the genderqueer generation. Sure, there’s all kinds of hot naked spreads, but you actually can genuinely say you read it for the articles with a “straight” face.

Just a warning, the website (linked above) features many NSFW photos.

The inaugural “bedroom issue” has just been released, and is already on independent bookstore shelves. Release parties continue to soldier on, including stops in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Seattle.

Van Sant’s next movie, ‘Restless’ will film in Oregon

Local filmmaker Gus Van Sant will be feaured Oct. 30th

Local filmmaker Gus Van Sant will film 'Restless' locally

Local filmmaker Gus Van Sant has, no doubt, made it big. But though the native portrays Portland and the Pacific Northwest so elegantly on screen, not all his filming is done here.  So for a local film industry that struggles at the best of times it is most certainly welcome news to hear that Van Sant’s next film, Restless, will be filmed here in Oregon.

Saturday Night Live takes on the subject of gays in the military

snl-gaySome of my favorite comedic uber-gays have always been SNL‘s gay couple from New Jersey. Apparently, however, it was not a successful enough skit to make it to online video. But when Don’t Ask Don’t Tell so much in the news and even of the tip of President Obama’s tongue the dynamic duo have been brought back to Weekend Update with a gloriously military themed sketch.

It’s ok for me to make fun of Jersey, my family and I hail from there.

Zombies and bears and dancing…oh my!

BearPortland

Bearracuda returns to Portland Saturday

The beginnings of autumn may have put a slight lull into Portland’s queer nightlife as we all toyed with the idea of staying in, cuddling our snuggies, but I assure you this was a temporary lapse in judgment. We are still two weeks out from Halloween and already the weekend is packed with dress up dance parties.

Tonight’s monthly lady party, Crave, at Crush (1400 SE Morrison) sports a hot zombie theme with go go dancers, fog and strobe lights. Visceral Visuals will be on site projecting horror video imagery on the walls and the Molotov Dolls, Portland’s newest burlesque troupe, will have a sexy scary Halloween themed debut. DJs Mani & Monika.Mhz (top 40s, electro, house, hip hop) on the decks.

Fruitcake Photos

Max Voltage in costume promoting Homomentum

Just a few from Oct 9th w/ DJ’s Nolita, Gottesfinger and Girlfriends.

Were you out and about last weekend? See if you got shot by qPDX in our Fruitcake photo gallery.

More Gloss, more Fame

glossBy now you already know that hump day is a lot more happenin’ than it used to be. Whether drinking and dancing will help you make it through the week or hinder your productivity, enjoying the midweek pleasures has become a queer necessity.

Guest DJ Yo’Malley will be spinnin’ 80’s, new wave and pop, uptown with some gay pizza slices at Fame (5262 N Lombard), but the bigger bash will be downtown at Invasion’s (412 SW 4th) Gloss.

Photos from the first Homomentum: Freakeasy Speakeasy

The photos are up from Homomentum‘s debut performance Freakeasy Speakeasy last Saturday, October 10th at the E Room. Thanks to new contributor Erin Rook for capturing the imagery.

Homomentum‘s first performance in the aptly named E Room Tomb was a dark Halloween success. Fall has seen a slowdown in the queer nightlife calendar, but by shortly after 8pm the Tomb was filled with bright eyed audience members. Clocking in at just an hour it left us wanting more, which, luckily, we only have to wait a month for.
