Basic Rights Oregon recently produced a great ad campaign called “Marriage matters to me” featuring several Oregon couples both gay and straight. Four of these couples will get coverage on CNN this Valentines Day as part of Freedom to Marry‘s newest national campaign.
Via press release, BRO executive director Jeana Frazzini lauded the decision to show the ads on Valentine’s Day of all days.
“Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love and commitment, and that’s true for all couples, gay or straight,” said Frazzini. “We’re reaching out to Oregonians to talk about the reasons we all want to get married: we want to publicly affirm the commitment we’ve made to the person we love.”
You can see the video below and more at a statewide themed website Marriage Matters Oregon.

Labworks with video by D4N30V3R – PDX can be a really packed for the queerion and we can often feel sucked into the scene vortex. So bust out this Thursday with some beats that you can dance to sans pop. Queer DJ Sappho is a wicked spinstress worth the trip to straightland.
Friday
Bearracuda Scruff Night – I’m sure there are plenty of well groomed chubby cubbies out there, but this night is for roughnecks. So let that 5 o’clock shadow turn into a Portland hipster beard and let your Sunday morning outfit out to play. And even when the parties over you can find your scruffy puppies through your smartphone. Oh what a brave new world.

Thought-provoking and avant garde video and installation artist Gia Goodrich is looking for a diverse array of individuals for her next pieces. Not for the faint of heart, her last show at Disjecta featured some disturbing self-choking imagery as well as some comedic, but still very naked and raw, video installations. So here’s the pitch if you’re so bold.
My name is Gia Goodrich and I am a graduate student at PNCA working on my thesis project. The following is a call for participation for my thesis work. The first iteration of the piece will be showing in the MFA central gallery at PNCA in March. This will be a show documenting the process. The second will be the final piece that will show as part of the MFA Thesis exhibition in May.
This piece is dependent upon involvement from individuals of the queer community in Portland its surrounding areas.

CAP Archives Grand Opening and Exhibit – AIDS has been a part of our culture for 30 years now but CAP has been with us for almost as long. Celebrating its 25th anniversary CAP presents an exhibit of activist art and ephemera that will tug on your heartstrings at the same time as making you laugh at past marketing campaigns and images. It is a night of community remembering that will survive the ages long after our hangovers have left us forgetful.
Dirtbag and Drop Shop – Two of the dirtiest, funnest parties in town. Make Thursday dive night to start your weekend right.

Dolls from this Saturday's 'That's So Gay' in Bend, Oregon
This weekend saw some action in Oregon’s outlying cities (although Portland did celebrate a huge Q Center Gala at which Just Out’s Marty Davis was able to catch a bunch of great shots). Although I was not able to attend, Melody Awesomeazing, who performed with CJ and the Dolls, was able to catch some great moments at […]
  Aubree Bernier-Clarke
Local filmmaker and musician Aubree Bernier-Clarke (who you might recognize from her former band Swan Island, or more recently her cameo in Portlandia‘s “Dream of the 90s“) has been churning out the videos for queer muscians. She recently teamed up with Toronto based queer folk chanteuse Emma McKenna to direct the music video for “Run With It” and the Corin Tucker Band (Sleater-Kinney) for their song “Riley.”
Filmed partially in a tiny and quaint practice space the CTB vid also shows of some of Portland’s best features, including a nice segment on the Skidmore Bluffs. Their new album, 1000 Years, didn’t initially excite me very much, at least not in comparison to Tucker’s rockin’ roots, but it’s grown on me enough that I named it as one of 2010’s top ten queer albums.

Catherine Opie,'s portrait of model/actress Jenny Shimizu - Jenny (Bed), 2009. Courtesy Gladstone Gallery
Thursday
Catherine Opie talks about her current exhibition Girlfriends – Everyone loves a portrait they can relate to. For the queer community Opie’s work is the perfect synthesis of artistry and familiarity. Our very on heartfelt Annie Leibovits-style gaylebrity photographer. She pushes the envelope while making us queerdos feel uniquely at home.
Cafeteria – Hot lunch is back on the dance floor with this tiny bar crowded school daze celebrating gay night. Really great gender mix. You know this one.

In the spirit of new contributor’s Nicole’s piece earlier today on GLAAD’s Media Award nominees I’d like to give a nod to all the Academy Award noms that represented for the homos this year.
Especially exciting are two nominations in the Best Picture category for Black Swan, a pyschosexual thriller which stars Natalie […]
