New restaurant review: Oven & Shaker

The impossibly long bar at Oven & Shaker. Photo from Eater PDX.

The Pearl’s version of a pizza joint, Oven & Shaker, just opened its doors last week. Though the new wood fired and Italian inspired pizza place features the restauranteurs behind Nostrana, Cathy Whims, ChefStable’s Kurt Huffman, and Aviation Gin’s Ryan Magarian, the rising star is Head Chef (and friend to qPDX) Devon Chase, whose oven prowess will surely be Oven & Shaker’s biggest draw.

On the night before its opening, O&S was already packed with press that lingered well past their intended review window and you had to act fast to snag a slice of the signature wood fired concoctions. But bartenders at the restaurant’s endlessly long bar (rumored to be the longest in Portland) were happy to accommodate anxious taste buds with a sampling of introductory cocktails. The Pineapple Trainwreck was front and center with it’s tall green garnish and perfect ice cubes, and though it was tasty I found the ginger a little overwhelming. But the rest of the offerings were just as delicious while being a bit subtler, such as a perfectly blended vintage style Manhattan.

Translady Fanzine, mens baths products and frou frou vodka, a few of my gayvorite things

Zackary Drucker on the cover of Amos Mac's premiere issue of Translady Fanzine

This is something of an addendum to the Holigay Gift Guide. I occasionally get requests to review random products and, as one who loves to try new things, I usually give them a shot. Recently I received a line of mens skincare called Organic Male as well as some new and sweet holiday appropriate vodkas from Smirnoff. I’d also been putting off reviewing Amos Mac and Zackary Drucker’s Translady Fanzine from a couple months back. The procrastination was wholly my own schedule and not due to the amazingness that awaited me in the full color pictoral magazine premiere.

But I did want to eventually visit each of these things. So what’s a queer to do but take a weekend morning (or, let’s be real, midday) to draw a bath and take in all 3 pleasures. And just in time for you to consider buying them for yourself or others, holiday gifts or parties.

Get your raunchy comedy, your Rebel Grrl and your Sass Patrol ready for a weekend of the old and the new, the Bent and the blue

Claw vs. Claw plays Saturday at the 1 year anniversary of Rebel Girl

Don’t forget Electrogals, which continues all week. And check out an interview with founder Heather Perkins from earlier in the week.

Thursday

Fist: Electro queer night – New dance night at a new venue. And we like new and different don’t we? Jams from DJ Hookerface so be prepared. This is an electro night and Hooker and I used to rave a decade ago so shit’s gonna be real, and hella danceable.

Smutty Clown open mic – Here in P-Town we like to make everything dirty. So naturally, we already had dirty poetry, now we need dirty comedy. I’m a huge fan of the innuendo myself, as anyone who has spent time with me after 5 o’clock can tell you. I also appreciate sexy comedians. So who knows what to expect from those signing up but it’s hosted by Whitney Streed and Sterling Clark (basically the template they used for Portlandia‘s “…all the hot girls wear glasses… line) so you know it’ll be off to a good start.

Head down to Hamburger Mary’s for a bite that benefits street rights

Support the Sisters of the Road by eating at gay-friendly Hamburger Marys

Well, maybe street rights isn’t quite the right way to phrase it, but do hop on down to gay friendly Hamburger Mary’s in Old Town this Wednesday for a good cause that helps some of the city’s most disadvantaged citizens.

The venue, host to lesbian/queer dance nights such as Dollhouse, are donating a portion of […]

Baconfest, Bent feat Jeau Breedlove, Mrs HoMotown, Chunky Dunk and and Q Center open house make a summer weekend

Bacon Salt man at last year's Portland Baconfest. 2011 version takes place this Saturday on E Burnside

Thursday

Q center open house – Come say hi to the new Executive Director, Barbara McCullough-Jones while you check out featured art on the history of Portland drag from photographer Greg Pitts.

Kerry Hallet @ Alberta Pub – The pub may be eclipsed by its newer hipster neighbors across the street but it’s still got amazing fries and damn good acoustic music sets, like this one by local Kerry Hallet.

Friday

Bent featuring Jeau Breedlove – This months gay ass dance party up north features the homo hop stylings of Jeau Breedlove. The name will probably get old quickly but I heard the cat at the Queer Music Fest the rhymes are pretty dope.

Market Q just got a little bit sweeter with free brunch

Vegan cheese from Heidi Ho Organics

I’ve applauded the effort of the newly formed Market Q, a community farmer’s market on busy Mississippi Ave lovingly presented by the Q Center, Ali Williams and the LGBT community. Whether because of the cool, rainy summer (I have yet to see tomatoes in my yard or in my neighborhood)  the produce offerings have been slim, but the prepared food delicious. […]

Wanna make Mayor Sam Adams sing? Donate to Basic Rights Oregon

Tina Kotek offers up a challenge on the mic

Oregon State Representative, and out lesbian, Tina Kotek is a good sport. She wants to help raise money for Basic Rights Oregon as part of their summer organizing campaign. So here’s to hoping that our Mayor Sam Adams is also a good sport (and from what I’ve seen I think he is), because Kotek has thrown down the gauntlet, saying,

…I’ve decided to up the ante. I’m laying down a challenge – if you help raise $7,500 by next week, I will challenge Mayor Sam Adams to a Karaoke contest at a Basic Rights Oregon summer garden party!

It’s a lofty goal for 7 days or less to be sure, but even meager contributions help get us on the path to 7500.

Bites for Rights this Thursday

Portlanders gay and straight alike are fond of their food. They’re also fond of their politics so what better way to combine those joys than to eat your way to a better world for gay, lesbian and transgender rights.

The 12th Annual Bites for Rights event is Thursday, June 23rd! For one day only, fair-minded restaurants, coffeehouses, bakeries, bars and food carts across the state will donate a portion of their proceeds to Basic Rights Oregon. Bites for Rights is a fundraising event that supports Basic Rights Oregon’s work to ensure equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Oregonians.
