  There have been a lot of changes in the queer community recently. This week, Q Center and SMYRC announced that they will join forces. SMYRC is a non-profit Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center that provides counseling and other services for queer youth.
Previously, a program of Cascadia Behavioral Health Care, SMYRC served between 700-1,000 youths a year. SMYRC’s current location will close down and all programs will continue through the Q Center. According the the Q Center’s website, this merger will strengthen the center’s youth and adult programs while still providing stability for SMYRC affairs. So far feedback has been positive although some have raised concerns.

  Ethos, a Portland non-profit organization, recently announced its new Executive Director. Jedidiah Chavez, who is also a known artist,has worked as the Ethos development director since 2008. Since then, Chavez has increased revenue by 30% and secured 1.5 million for capital improvements to the North Portland locations. Ethos currently operates three facilities in Portland. The after school program operates in 34 urban elementary and middle schools. Being the largest community music school in Oregon, Ethos is able to reach out to both inner city and rural youth-providing quality music education.
Chavez, a gay Latino, has not only done an amazing job with Ethos, he is also known for his personal work with-in the community. Chavez coordinated the Safe Schools Inititave, which is a statewide effort to reduce bullying and harassment in Oregon Public schools as marketing and major gifts officer for Equity Foundation. He has also held leaderships positions with the YMCA’s Jack, Will and Rob Center, the University of Western States and also Gertrude Press.

 Oh Oscar! Being 30, I have been able to witness our generation of queers and queer friendly people evolve and accomplish. It is amazing how far Hollywood has come. Trans America and Brokeback Mountain seems to have only been the beginning. I never thought that I would see the day where gender-bending roles and other homo-centric roles would be up for an Oscar.

  K.D. Lang Living in Portland? Is it True?It is no secret that Portland is known for having some celeb guests. Rumor has it that K.D Lang has recently called PDX her home. That’s right, K.D. may just be living right around the corner from you! According to an inside source of Byron Beck, a popular gossip blog, Ms. Lang is now an Oregonian.
What better place for a vegan, lesbian musician to live? So keep an eye out fellow homos, because you know if she is here, you are bound to see her popping in places like The Bye and Bye and Portobello. To the younger generation, she might just blend into the crowd of typical Pacific North West lesbians. She ain’t no hipster!

  Feminist Agenda PDX Launches Party Jan. 26 Calling all Feminists! The Girls from In Other Words, Katie Carter and Amber Rowland have officially launched “Feminist Agenda PDX” and want to celebrate. They are hosting a FREE all-age, family friendly event at Mercy Corps., January 26th.There will be short films on media literacy by the Reel Grrls (all girl camp in Seattle) and a screening of Miss Representation. There will be an after party celebration for those of you over 21 at the Beauty Bar; drink specials included.
The two started Feminist Agenda PDX in hopes of bringing the Portland Feminist community together as well as promoting the work of different feminist, queer and radical organizations. Beside the website-which includes a directory of over 30 groups and organizations, the Feminist Agenda PDX has a monthly newsletter to help promote different future events and volunteer opportunities.  Q-Center's Winter Gala Feb. 18th, 2012 Earlier this week, Q-Center announced the 4th annual Winter Gala. The Gala will be happening February 18th at the Y.U. Contemporary Art Center.This event is to celebrate our community and also serves as the main fundraiser for the Q-Center. We can expect to see some awesome live entertainment.
Hal Gerard, the Ohio native and singer/songwriter will be gracing the stage with his guitar skills. Bob Mould, who was recently on Conan with the Foo Fighters, will also be playing. Aaron Altermose will also be showing his amazing talent on the piano. Don’t forget the gal power with Lisa Mann, who won the 2009 Cascade Blues Association Muddy Water’s award for best voice, and Amaya Villazan who is an artist known for her debut in “Clean House”.

Is this Goodbye?
Congressman Issa, R-CA (one of the richest men in Congress) has proposed to end Saturday delivery of mail. As a result to Issa’s proposal, there will be jobs lost and hours cut for the postal employees. There has been public outrage from many different states. Rep. Green, D-TX announced that he found a particular pattern of targeting the low-income neighborhoods for closures.
Every single facility mentioned is located in a lower income and predominately minority neighborhood. Nearly 30% of the all the postal facilities listed for consolidation are located in five states, with Texas leading the way at 222 potential closures. Almost without exception, this pattern holds for our nation’s other great cities as well.

 The December “scandal” of the Clark County Chamber of Commerce has re-surfaced. (Covered in December) The Executive Director of Q-Center, Barbara McCullough recently attended a business mixer in Vancouver in which Izad Khormaee (Director of Chamber of Commerce-WA) was a guest speaker. McCullough publicly spoke about her account.
