Contribute your comics to Prism in time for the Queer Press Grant deadline

Prism Comics is proud to announce that submissions are still being accepted for the 2010 Prism Comics Queer Press Grant, with a deadline of September 15th, 2010. The QPG was established by Prism to assist in the publication and promotion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender comics.

“The Queer Press Grant continues to be one of the most significant grants dedicated to supporting independent comic books,” says Justin Hall, Prism’s Talent Relations Chair. “The Grant is given to a cartoonist, comics writer/artist or team working on a project with LGBT characters or themes, to assist them in publishing a new project or expanding an existing one. Since 2005, the annual Grant has provided recipients with a substantial sum of money, which has varied according to our fundraising efforts; for the past two years, we have awarded $2000, our highest Grant amount, and hope to continue to increase the amount with the generosity of our donors.”

Disko Warp kicks off Kumoricon at Ground Kontrol

How did I not know about the queer contingent of Kumoricon, Oregon’s largest anime convention?

Anime may not be my most watched television or read comics but I am geeky like that, so thank you Ryan Prado at Just Out for clue-ing me in to tonight’s opening celebration at Ground Kontrol (511 NW Couch) for the gays put on by Disko Warp Records.

That party also doubles as a […]

Labor day weekend picks for the 'Mrs.' first time, frozen t-shirt's last time, and Static's good times

Kaj-Anne Pepper hosts the first Mrs.

As much as I love you all, I can’t say I’m sad to leave town, which is currently raining and may be one of the shortest summer’s I’ve ever experienced in my many PDX years, this holiday weekend. But there are a few eclectic first and last times that are worth checking out if you are braving the local weather for that last sprint of summer good times…

Thursday

TJO’s solo show :::VERTIGINOUS VESTIGES AND OTHER PROOFS THAT IM PHYSIOLOGICALLY INCAPABLE OF BEING A REALIST::: a doodle book – Tara Jane O’Neil is most known for wielding the musical axe but she’s also an avant garde visual artist. Her doodle book selections whimsically incorporate the elements of Dada and Primitivism into a contemporary comic book sketchpad. Food from Dovetail bakery and dykes making music. Oh and likely the best underground art at First Thursday…or at least the most Basquiat.

New queer foodie show 'Put it in your mouth with Wyatt Riot'

'Put it in your mouth' with Wyatt Riot

For awhile there was a Facebook group trying to get local queer foodie Wyatt Riot his own show on Logo. I don’t think it got very far. But Wyatt doesn’t need MTV networks to make homos in PDX want to know about the best food carts and places to put it in your mouth. I mean, Portland was recently voted #1 by CNN above Thailand for our street food.

So, instead he launched his own show Put it in Your Mouth along with Wolf and Owl Productions. And I’m sure we owe a lot of the cooking and the eating to the gay munchers.

Brand spankin' new and old 'Pony' favorites, a 'JunKtion' of stuff to do this weekend

Sword and Fern's Mt. Saint Helen's Necklace and Same Dream Necklace

Um, so gee, we’re late this week. I hope that doesn’t mean you missed the 2nd installment of the new queer night Cafeteria at my local Vendetta last night. I sure didn’t. While I didn’t see any lunch trays (get on it boys! Atmosphere!) I saw plenty of crunk gays getting down on that tiny dancefloor. The music was a great mix of oldies, 90s, and today…but mixed way more elegantly than an adult contemporary radio station.

But hey neighbors…can we please keep the patio open just one more hour? As soon as everyone arrives just before 11 the doors shut and it becomes a familiar oven. Someone really needs to develop the technology to harness the energy greated from the body heat of club kids. It’ll be cleaner than coal. I promise.

Casting call for FTM actors

Are you an aspiring actor who is also trans? Well, you might have a sound your niche already. Award-winning trans director Rhys Ernst is looking for some fine young gentlemen to audition for the lead role in his upcoming MFA thesis comedy Tristan and Zooey. He describes the character as a transitioned 20-something boy-next-door type.

SYNOPSIS: Gender, cats, and mythical roadside attractions are at the center of a tumultuous […]

Some words from the 'Real L Word's Mikey Koffman during her Portland visit

Mikey takes part in the "gun show" at Dingos

The Real L Word just presented its finale with a Portland appearance by co-star Mikey Koffman the recent weekend of the 15th  and I’m all kinds of ambivalent and intrigued.

Firstly, many Portlanders may not have tuned into the show at all, seeing as Los Angeles seems so different from us, even if we do share a sexuality. Autostraddle gives a really good critique of the show’s shortcomings while at the same time giving some background and advice for ways to grow.

And then there’s Mikey herself. I have not had the chance to meet her, as the interview below was via email, but there are two very distinct impressions as far as I can. First is the egotistical shade-wearing alpha-bitch as presented by one unhappy E-Room attendee on Mikey’s Official Fan Page that has since been deleted. And then there’s the gregarious and down-to-earth woman that comes across in this ShewWired interview from early in the season.

Melissa Etheridge at Spirit Mountain Casino

Melissa Etheridge

Has it really been so long that the iconic lesbian folk-rocker Melissa Etheridge is already relegated to the casino circuit along with oldies station hits? Does that happen in less than two decades? Apparently the answer is yes, as Etheridge takes stage at Spirit Mountain Casino (27100 SW Salmon River Highway, in Grande Rhonde) tomorrow Tuesday the 24th.

But that doesn’t mean she isn’t still rockin’. This show may be out of town but it is sold out. Despite a recent divorce and battle with cancer the butch blonde heartthrob has had a Broadway debut, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and her new album Fearless Love is getting damn decent reviews.

Snapshots from last night's Portland Lady Gaga show

Little Monsters Brooks and KT

Because qPDX was unable to make it to last night’s Lady Gaga show, we asked several of our friends to give us their highlights of last night’s show at the Rose Garden as well as agreeing to show us their amazing costumes in this Portland does Lady Gaga photo gallery. We encourage you to tell us about your experience in the comments below, and if you have pictures you want posted send them my way! (alley@qpdx.com)

Here’s what they said.
