And the abilities of lead Dreya Weber are vast, as we should know from her 2006 aerial extravaganza The Gymnast. Weber, who will be in attendance at this screening, plays Alexandra, a decorated officer to returns to her small town where she is quickly recruited to help a troubled teen in boot camp. When the real reasons for her return start to surface, however, both are put in a precarious position. Continue reading »   'Die Schwestern' or 'The Sisters' 6:30pm @ Living Room Theaters – I Killed My Mother 7pm @Cinema 21 – We Have to Stop Now Almost all of us have needed to see a therapist at some point in our lives and their help can be essential. Nonetheless, in the spirit of the phrase “Physician heal thyself” therapists also have a reputation for being some folks in most need of help. Enter the romantic dromedy We have to Stop Now, which follows a successful lesbian therapist couple on the dawn of their book release How to Succeed in Marriage Without Even Trying. They’ve come to discover that not only do you have to try, but sometimes trying isn’t enough as their relationship begins to fail. They are secretly in couples counseling and have a sister crashing on the couch when a documentary film crew descends to film their perfect marriage. Continue reading »   'I Killed My Mother' Saturday Oct 2nd 3:30pm @ Cinema 21 – Shorts series 4 short films kick off the post-party day after, so it’s a good mix to start festing. My Name is Love follows two men who share the same secret and the dangerous liaison it produces. Titillating. Gayby follows the straight girl fantasy of having a baby with her gay best friend of college by actually getting to bed him. Good luck with that one. Go-Go Reject delves into the fantasies of a frozen yogurt slinger who aims to be the naked boy version of Jennifer Beals. Queer Pet Adventures has got to be the gayest movie ever… 5pm @ Cinema 21 – Assume Nothing In a most Portlandesque love of gender query Assume Nothing examines what it means to inhabit a gender that is neither or both “male” and “female.” Focusing on the art, photography and performances of five “alternative” gender artists of Maori, Samoan-Japanese, and European descent, AN blurs all kinds of lines while it entertains. The gathering butchies celebrate a vast array of identities.
This convention is part party, learning experience, performance and part art. It opens tonight with a A Taste of Butch Flavor art exhibition at the Q Center (4115 N Mississippi) with live music featuring a reunion of Portland’s all-womyn percussion troupe, The Rhythm Givers, with special guests. Continue reading »   Aaron Tveit as Peter Orlovsky and James Franco as Allen Ginsberg in 'Howl' Portland’s celebration of all things queer and filmic, well one of them (don’t you love this town?) is here once again to usher in the season of popcorn and snuggling. This year the Portland Lesbian and Gay Film Festival takes over Cinema 21, Living Room Theaters, and The Hollywood Theater starting with the Allen Ginsberg beat biopic Howl. Now in its 14th year, PLGFF, has grown out of the struggling film festival that could into a vibrant week and a half long celebration that has already sold out VIP platinum passes. Artistic Director Gabriel Mendoza says of the progression, “In earlier days, simply finding queer films was a challenge…[Now] the challenge is whittling the selection down to what will work best in Portland.” Continue reading »   Dexter Flowers and Cooper Lee Bombardier perform Sunday at Not Enough! Festival Thursday Bollywood Bike In with Qurbani – Giving Portland a little much needed cultural flavor local DJ Anjiali and Kid Sister are showing classic Bollywood films outside the Q Center (4115 N Mississippi) all month long. This week features Qurbani and I’m excited to see a South Asian take on the 80s… Ratatat afterparty with Rude Dudes – Ratatat are not a gay band but they’re hipsters and isn’t that about the same thing in Portland these days? Don’t worry, they’ve teamed up with “Rude” homos for a spanktastic dance party and DJ set. This might be the most mellow Thursday I’ve seen in awhile. Friday Mendy’s Big Gay Boat Party – Do you need an excuse to bust out those Top-Siders and sailor hat? No, you don’t. But in case you want to fool around with others in sea garb this is your chance.

Whip Cream Olympics at Red Cap – Yet another Red Cap party that some will be titillate some and disgust others, this is a week long championship of feats of athleticism involving that sweet, fluffy treat. Friday Pre-funk with DJ Lunch Lady – Low key Killingsworth coffee shop red e (1006 North Killingsworth) is one of my new favs, (even though I also love the nearby CoffeeHouse 5) and DJ Lunch Lady will be at the helm for an early evening art opening. I heard that his inaugural Cafeteria party at Vendetta was off the chain, so combine that with free alcohol and it’s the perfect start to your weekend. Continue reading »   Film still for 'Field Guide to November Days' In Portland the queer community and the bike community are inextricably linked. Arts, culture, and film overlap with both. So the latest project from Sampo films, run by Nick Peterson and openly queer partner Mary DeFreese is quintessentially west coast LGBT. Championed by prominent gay filmmaker Gus Van Sant, the duo’s first several films were shorts that, at 20 to 40 minutes, were difficult to place in either the short or feature space. But soon they brought their cinematically beautiful films, all shot in 16mm to the feature space with 2006’s Yellow. Based on the same characters A Field Guide to November Days is a very different film although co-producer Mary DeFreese says that this time they intended to put splashes of red into every shot. This experimental project features very little dialogue, instead focusing on the intensity of silence and the power of color. It was also filmed almost entirely by bike. Continue reading » |
