Eminent Portland Drag Emcee Poison Waters. Photo by Mike Burt

Yours truly, along with contributing photographer Mike Burt were in attendance at Red Cap Garage for last night’s Portland Drag Race finale. The night went a little slow, as Portland performance is wont to do, but it left plenty of time for schmoozing and chatting and a great time was had by all. In case you missed […]

This Friday the Tranny Roadshow was in town and new qPDX photo contributor Clara Rodriguez was there to catch all the action in photos, in case you missed it.

Meanwhile I was around the bend at Crave‘s Purple Rain party which was a royal success. And the Prince-themed party has plenty of photos courtesy OSI […]

A weekend for ladies, menz, and everything in between

Tahoe Jackson will perform Saturday at the Red Dress fundraiser. Photo by Wayne Bund

This beautiful spring day has all the local queers riled up and ready to mingle. And we have many opportunities to do so. The weekend kicks off tomorrow not only with the Tranny Roadshow but with Crave for the ladies Menz Room and Red Cap’s official Red Dress Pre-Party for the dudes, and Cuda Cabaret for the artfags.

The qPDX sponsored Crave brings the ladybeat back to Crush (1400 SE Morrison) with a Purple Rain theme that will have your doves crying and your feet dancing. DJs Alicious and Boy return to the decks with some 1999 love for your dripping purple heart. Oh and did I mention that Go Go Girls will bring out squirt guns to get the sweaty crowd into the wet, rainy spirit?

Trans Sri-Lankan hip-hop artist D’Lo at Reed

D'Lo

Every bit as hot and talented as fellow Tamil MIA, political theatre artist/writer and music producer D’Lo unleashes his spoken word and hip hop act on the students on Reed tonight at 7pm in the campus chapel and tomorrow in Winch Hall at 1pm for a workshop.

With an interesting combination of pure Los Angeles street knowledge and a BA from UCLA in Ethnomusicology and a graduate of New York’s School of Audio Engineering, D’Lo brings important political and ideological discussions to a genre that needs an infusion of the genuine. This “…hella well-rounded G” tries to explain his synthesis of the disparate by saying,

Homomentum’s end (or at least break) is nigh

The performance hilarity and audacity of Pants Off Production‘s Homomentum series kept our cockles warm through the winter. Alas, and the trees begin to bud and queer nightlife is taking off with a host of new nights popping up it is time to bid our familiar pal a farewell.

The season-ending theme of Leather & Lace gives ample opportunity to take advantage of our spring awakened hearts yearnings with sensual performance art. With acts such as Beefcake Burlesque, Felice Shays, Celestial Creatures and a special homo-lay-dancer filled extravaganza lead by Katrina O’Brien I have no doubt the ‘momentum will go out with a bang.

An Artsy Party this Friday

DJ Permanent Wave, aka Jenny Hoyston at last month's Art Party

Newly launched artfag club night Art Party is back for the third time this Friday the 2nd at Branx (315 SE 3rd). Hosts DJ Gottesfinger and Permanent Wave aim to bring a combination of experimental music and performance art to an often pop music focused club scene. Their solution is to bring their artrock sensibilities to the dancefloor and Friday’s will be a soiree not to be missed.

Noted experimental musicians Tunnels (Nick Bindeman, he of Jackie O Motherfucker and Eternal Tapestral),
and White Rainbow (local stalwart Adam Forkner, he of too many experimental projects to name) will be
performing alongside Sexual Champions, an all improv, all female brass ensemble headed by Jenny Hoyston
(she of Erase Errata, and too many other musical projects to name).

Interview with Heather Cassils, andro Lady Gaga prison kisser

Heather Cassils

Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s “Telephone” music video, epic for both its overabundance of pop culture reference as well as its 9 minute running time, has officially reached 1 billion internet viewings but many of those eyes were focused on the very queer intro, featuring genderqueer stripping, kissing and dubious acting in the County Jail, Prison for Bitches.

The most interesting interaction during this extended intro comes from relative unknown bodybuilder and performance artist Heather Cassils, who has no qualms about sitting herself next to Gaga and capturing her in a naughty embrace.

But Cassils is better at more than just making out. The Los Angeles based personal trainer and performance artist is fascinating for her ideas on art, gender, popular culture. Here are some of her answers to the most pressing questions of her wide-eyed watchers including upcoming projects, perspective her own personal gender identity, and presentation, and even a glance into her love life.

Portland (lay) dancers needed for gaytastic Homomentum performace

Come on Portland dancing queens!

Come on Portland dancing queens!

Gay, lesbian, queer dance-fans, listen up! Katrina O’Brien, local Portland dancer and choreographer is looking for 5+ fun loving queers to join a low-key, non-professional lineup of dancers for a one off performance at the last ever (sad!!) Homomentum next month.

No particular skillset needed – you don’t have to be a “dancer” to join, but you do get to work with some talented (Katrina) and funny people (me, for example) who are all very good looking. Super!

More infos under the cut.
