Thursday: Gender Bender Variety Show @ The E Room

Gender Bender @ The E-Room, Portland, Oregon

Check out the amazing stack of queer performers lined up for Gender Bender @ The E-Room!

This Thursday the yearly spectacle of the Gender Bender Variety Show will be coming to the E-Room! It looks like a spectacle not to be missed. The E Room is usually pretty insular, by this time they have cast a wide net to get  some of the best most innovative queer performers that run the gamut from traditional drag to post-queer performance art to the E Room! It’s going to be hot, queer, and amazing, and for a good cause!

Unity Project’s Portland Black Pride 2009

Black OUT marches in Portland Pride 2006

Black OUT marches in Portland Pride 2006

Though the wrestlers, dancers and Latin hunks were out in full force this weekend, making for an incredibly successful Latino Gay Pride in Portland, our Black Pride, put on by the Unity Project (formerly Brother to Brother) seems to be having more of a struggle.

Amid the scandal of Executive Director Alisa Simmons’ abrupt resignation, and questions about the need for Unity Project to exist, the events scheduled for this year seem a bit pale in comparison to the popular block party of last year.

Tegan and Sara are a tease

When I saw the words “new music video” in my Tegan and Sara Twitterfeed I was pretty stoked. Indeed, here they are in a video with Chris Walla listening to their new music and they’re stoked too! Unfortunately, we only get to hear their exclamations of pleasure and not the actual recorded music itself. Perhaps that’s enough…

new music from Tegan and Sara on […]

Family Pride

familyprideWhy should only grownups get to wear rainbows? Yes, some aspects of Pride are about celebrating our sexuality, but mahy are also about celebrating our identities and communities. Children are a big part of those! So whether Heather has two mommies, two daddies, or thinks she might be a boy, it’s time to get together at the Q Center (4115 N Mississippi) this Sunday afternoon for crafting, music, food and fun at Family Pride!

Dolly Parton covers for a cause

dolly

Dolly still looks fabu in her 60s...

Originally printed in Just Out:

Dolly Parton may not be an out queer herself (though, believe me, the rumors swirl like an overactive hot tub about Parton and longtime pal Judy Ogle), but she’s always been a champion of gay, lesbian, bi and trans causes. In a musical genre so often dominated by gun-toting good ole boys, the buxom beauty is fearless; she’s even received hate mail and threats for her status as a gay icon. What better way to honor her than to recruit some of Portland’s finest musicians while raising money for a diverse celebration of women in music, Siren Nation. The Dolly Parton Hoot Night cover extravaganza takes place at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) Saturday, June 6.

Your Pride schedule is already filling up, I know. But for the furries and and belly-lovers among us you really don’t want to miss this weekend’s BearTown 14: Carnival of Bears put on by the Oregon Bears.

Indeed this celebration, amazingly in its 14th year, has much to much to completely profile but luckily the bears have cooked up some great highlights. (Oh yeah, and to hint yet again at the new qPDXer, and man about town, who will be covering several of these events as well…Is anticipation building yet?)

This Weekend: Gay Mart, Pinker Shade of Gay (Sat, not Fri!!), Dolly Parton Hoot Night…

It’s getting busy, folks. I know this by the fact that I am expected at 5 different events this Friday! Two are private events, but Pride is definitely heating up. We here at QPDX.com are going to try and cover as much as we can…so before you say “Hey! You didn’t mention/cover/go to/take photos of XYZ” remember there is only two of us (Adina is sadly out of town…).
