As a queer person, and as an immigrant into what is widely known as the “toughest country to get in to” in the world, I am constantly reminded of the inequality people face in this country who are involved in binational same-sex couples.I don’t have a Green Card, I am not allowed to work, I receive no government support, I am constant danger of my visa being revoked. As a student, I am forced to pay extortionate out of state tuition that is three times that of in-state tuition, and even if I were in a committed long term relationship, I would not be able to get a green card through my partner. I am actively discriminated against because of both my citizenship and my sexuality.

 Pride season is pretty much upon us. The guides have been printed, the month declared by our president. And this weekend begins the first of the actual Pride celebrations with Latino Gay Pride PDX’s La Lucha, which launches tomorrow, Thursday June 4th, with its opening reception at Miracle Theatre (525 SE Stark).
Friday takes off with VIP and dance parties (to be covered by a brand new qPDX contributor so stay tuned!) and culminates with Sunday’s fest from 4 to 8pm.

My thoughts are all in a jumble about this, but I will try and make sense of it the best I can. I am a white, queer European who has been an anti-facist and anti-racist activist since I was a teen. And I love Portland. I love this city. I care about this city, and I care about the things I see on bus stops.

 Today our newly elected President made an overt statement in support of queer Americans by declaring June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. And actually he is not the first. President Clinton made a similar declaration in June of 2000 (conveniently positioned towards the end of his second term, well after enacting “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”)

 SuperGay was spotted in Portland, OR - who is this queer superhero? It has come to QPDX.com’s attention that a mysterious character known only as SuperGay has been spotted flying around town (and in the bean aisle at Fred Meyer) sporting a rainbow cape and a spandextastic outfit, and campaigning for the rights of queer people everywhere. I caught up with SuperGay on a local rooftop, where zhe was polishing their silver mirrored goggles with their rainbow cape, but before I could ask SuperGay how we can contact them, they just said “Same gay time, same gay channel” (I assume that means logo, but i don’t have cable) and flew off into the sunset with a barbie doll, a GI Joe, and a My Little Pony Unicorn clutched tightly to their chest. (the modern equivalent of riding off into the sunset, with the guy/girl i suppose)

 Dirty Queer Swap and Shop at In Other Words Books, Portland A little late, I know, but late is better than never! It’s time to take a brief look at an event we had in town this past Sunday, the Dirty Queer Swap and Shop. While we all know and love Dirty Queer – The X Rated Open Mic, the swap and shop is a new concept DQ host and founder Sossity Chiricuzio came up with one (rainy, probably) afternoon: An opportunity to support In Other Words by inviting sex toy vendors and the public alike to shop for sex toys, gear and accessories as well as to swap used items no longer needed.

 Fischerspooner's new album 'Entertainment' Originally a duo formed by classically trained musician Warren Fischer and video-artist and experimental theater performer Casey Spooner for an impromptu rendition of their makeshift track “Indian Cab Driver” at the Astor Place Starbucks, the group grew to over 20 performers, most of whom are dancers and guest vocalists. Combining elements performance art, theater, fashion and multimedia Fischerspooner puts on a show that is flamboyant frivolous and avant-garde all at once.
