A weekend of galas, launches, anniversaries, a return to SugarTown

The legendary Bob Mould performs at Q Center's annual Winter Gala Saturday

Thursday

PQ Monthly launch party – A new publication is in town and tonight is the night both the print and web versions launch. We are excited to share resources and have even more reason to make sure local queer coverage is comprehensive and thought-provoking. Oh yeah, and an excuse to party.

Friday

SugarTown queer soul – The best queer homage to 60s and 70s soul in town is finally back after a brief hiatus. The new venue of the Spare Room has a great space, cheap drinks and will be a refreshing change to the usual old haunts. And this special return also features this week’s DJ profile for Freaky Outty. Plus where else can you get sweet treats by Emily Franco in addition to a drink? It’s a killer comeback you won’t want to miss.

DJ of the Week — Freaky Outty

DJ Freaky Outty

Every week (or so…) we introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.

Freaky Outty is a fixture in queer and mainstream scenes alike. He plays club stompers to sweet sweet soul and lots in between. You can catch some of the latter during the return of one of the best new club nights, the themtastic early soul of SugarTown, this Friday at the Spare Room.

When and how did you get started DJing?
I started collecting records about 10 years ago, and gradually started dipping my toes into house parties and little outdoor raves around the last year of high school. After I’d lived in Portland about a year I managed to get a regular weekly gig at a club that forced me to really start taking the hobby more seriously and step my game up. I learned a lot on my feet at that job since I totally wasn’t prepared for it! They never should have hired me, but I lucked out and became a better DJ because of it.

This weekend welcomes back Homomentum, celebrates 4 years of Fat Fancy and gets some Easy Moustache Madness

Gillicorn Blessing is going to make you believe in myths and legends. Photo by Erika Stanley.

Thursday

Start your weekend right with 2 great neighborhood favs Dirtbag and Sweet Tea. Just a heads up for the newbies cuz the rest of you all should know this.

Friday

Homomentum presents Myths & Legends – That gayest of vaudeville drag revivals (I think that was redundant but, really, it’s that gay) returns fora 3rd year running to give you some of the weirdest, wildest, and hottest dance and performance art in queer Portland (yeah, pretty gay). Opening month will feature epic tales and fantastic journeys re-imagined through drag and debacuherous storytelling. And who better to tell this story than one of the featured performers, Gillicorn Blessing (did you know that a group of unicorns is called a blessing?), who I hear will also be debuting a new member.

DJ of the Week — Action Slacks

DJ Action Slacks. Photo by Annie Maribona

qPDX is starting a new feature! Every week we will introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.

This week’s DJ of the Week is something like a repeat. This is for two reasons. Firstly, I’ve had a busy week and a bit under the weather. More importantly, however, DJ Action Slacks‘ profile was one of the most popular so far and definitely the most shared when it was originally published. This weekend she’s at the helm of a bigger night. Only in its third incarnation, SugarTown queer soul party is the best new queer night with a distinctly non-pop music focus.

As I said previously the Slacks distinct music and fashion sense is pretty much my favorite right now and I have a sneaking suspicion that this party might turn out to be 2011?s best new night.

Head on down to SugarTown tonight, PDX’s sweetest new queer soul dance party

Welcome new contributor Heather Hooks!

Sugar Town, the latest Queer soul dance night brought to you by DJ Action Slacks, is certainly the sweet spot to be this Thursday night. For its second installment, DJ Action Slacks has combined forces with Portland’s own soul superhero, DJ Beyonda, and San Francisco’s consistently sold out Hard French […]

Portlandia is also SugarTown, Gaycating, Glowing and checkin’ out some Lez Stand Up

Thursday

SugarTown Ice Cream Soul-cial – Last month’s very first ST was a sweet sweet success. Despite the sound trouble early on this celebration of sweetness and soul left a pleasant taste on everyone’s tongue. The music was fun and a nice respite from the usual club fare, the sweet treats for sale were cheap and delicious and there were just enough people to create plenty of opportunities mingle and dance without that claustrophobic and intense heat sometimes generated by popular nights. Sweet Thursday perfection. *

Friday

Crave presents “Glow” – Crave’s annual black light party is always a messy success. And as the creators are moving on to that bigger glow stick coast city Los Angeles, it might also be your last chance to feel the dark light love. This is your chance to relive your raver days or revel in what you missed for those of you in your 20s.  But get there early cuz this tiny space fills up fast with females, and besides, they have killer drink specials before 10. *

Slutwalkers, link arms and head down to Sugar Town, a jock auction, a porch parlor, and the waiting arms of Lady Bunny this weekend

The infamous Lady Bunny performs Friday at Red Cap

Thursday

Sugar Town queer soul night – Rotture’s soul night has become a staple in Portland nightlife both gay and straight. But as with many popular nights the douchebags inevitably catch on, and it can be even worse at a “straight” night. I’m not sure if this happened to the beloved soul night, but it was time for us to have our own anyway (Pansy Soul is great but Sloan’s is more for hanging out than dancing). Anyway, all of this to say I’m more than a little excited that one of the best dressed butchies I have ever seen, DJ Action Slacks, will lead us all in a little soulful 70s love starting this Thursday, and hopefully forever more. It’s free but donations for Q Patrol are welcomed.

Cafeteria turns 1 – Oh my god Freshman year is over! Now we can give swirlies to all the new queer club nights in town. And guest DJ Girlfriends will be spinnin’ in your parents’ back yard (i.e. the Vendetta patio) ’til 11, just like at the popular kids’ parties. We’ve made it folks. Sophomore year is gonna rule.

Michelle Machete brings the pansies some soul

Michelle Machete keepin' it real

With new nights at Mississippi Studios, Saratoga and more it seems Monday nights are coming back as a night for queer fun. One particular night is taking a genre that has gained some mainstream ground and bringing it to our community and our hood. Not brand new, DJ Michelle Machete‘s Pansy Soul is bringing the jive to Sloans (36 N Russell) this Monday and it’s worth checking out.

I haven’t had a chance to really check it out myself so I wanted to get some insight from the Machete herself on what’s so great about Pansy Soul.

qPDX: When did you start PS and why?

Michelle (Machete) Garcia: I stared PD last Summer. After I started my radio show “Turn Down the Lights.” Langano Lounge needed a DJ for Sunday nights. I feel a lot of the queer music scene is saturated with a lot of poppy dance music and top 40; new and commercial. When I say queer music scene I mean dance parties I frequently dance at and have a great time. Just wanted change it up a bit and bring some California Chicano influence to the scene.
