A weekend of ‘Candy’, ‘Culture’ and ‘Gaycation’

Little Tommy Bang Bang host Mrs Sloppy Seconds

Thursday

Culture Machine @ Disjecta – That oh-so-hip warehouse art space by the Dancin’ Bare and the Paul Bunyon actually is as cool as it seems. It certainly doesn’t hurt that one of our head homos, Kaj-Anne Pepper, will be part of the invading troupe. Culture Machine is a dance performance (and research tank) that is performed and created by Tahni Holt along with Kaj-Anne Pepper, Robert Tyree, Sallie Garrido-Spencer, Thomas Thorson, Suzanne Chi, and Dicky Dahl. It’s like a big queer DJ combined with a Reed thesis expressed through dance.

Drop ShopSultry new queer/stripper love hip hop night goes around for its second week. Was there any booty bouncing last week? Cuz I’m in the mood to shake my laffy taffy.

Labor day weekend picks for the 'Mrs.' first time, frozen t-shirt's last time, and Static's good times

Kaj-Anne Pepper hosts the first Mrs.

As much as I love you all, I can’t say I’m sad to leave town, which is currently raining and may be one of the shortest summer’s I’ve ever experienced in my many PDX years, this holiday weekend. But there are a few eclectic first and last times that are worth checking out if you are braving the local weather for that last sprint of summer good times…

TJO’s solo show :::VERTIGINOUS VESTIGES AND OTHER PROOFS THAT IM PHYSIOLOGICALLY INCAPABLE OF BEING A REALIST::: a doodle book – Tara Jane O’Neil is most known for wielding the musical axe but she’s also an avant garde visual artist. Her doodle book selections whimsically incorporate the elements of Dada and Primitivism into a contemporary comic book sketchpad. Food from Dovetail bakery and dykes making music. Oh and likely the best underground art at First Thursday…or at least the most Basquiat.

Photos from the 2nd Annual Homo's Got Talent

Winner Kaj-Anne Pepper struts his stuff

The 2nd Annual Homo’s Got Talent competition took place this year in the courtyard of the Jupiter Hotel, a big improvement over last year’s confined space. And though the program was long, and the exquisite winning performance by Kaj-Anne Pepper and crew at the very beginning, there were some real quality acts, and some even better costumes. You can relive, or […]

Gay Garage Sale graces Vendetta (PHOTOS)

One person’s trash is another person’s outfit.

Hipsters, dragsters, gays and queers flocked to Vendetta on Sunday to peruse through people’s goods and trash for the 2nd Gay Garage Sale. Blessed with non-raining weather, the surroundings of the Northeast bar Vendetta saw hordes of gays and those who flock to gays. DJ Lunchlady rocked jams in the front room while Dirty D hosted the patio through numerous illicit offers and costume changes.

I walked away with two old school lights that look like something out of a Skate World estate sale.

Check out all the pics on the photo page.

Kaj-anne Pepper wins May's Miss Thing

Winning contestant Kaj-anne Pepper with backup dancer Robert Tyree

Monthly drag competition Miss Thing at the Fez has quickly become the show to experience the breadth of Portland drag as well as a who’s who of almost every queer circle. And indeed, that night competition was just as fierce as we have come to expect.

Nonetheless, no one was surprised when the incorrigible and amazing Kaj-anne Pepper took first place with his ironic, satirical and beautiful medley of both Gaga and Madonna. With live vocals and backup dancers perfectly exemplifying the Gaga aesthetic it was a no-brainer, despite the quality of all the acts.

The ultra-gay theme, Lady Gaga vs. Madonna, produced a host of great performances starting with judges, including winner of last month, Bulimianne Rhapsody, who performed her own rendition of Paparrazzi instead praising the joys of wino-loving Carlo-Rossi.
