Delease Carter, a 21 year old student who lives in Northeast Portland and studies at Portland Community College Cascade (my old stomping ground!) is suing the city of Portland for battery and unlawful arrest.

Delease claims Portland Police Bureau officers (we don’t know which) touched breasts and genitals, slammed Delease’s head into the pavement and insulted her, all because she was walking home with friends in the middle of the street.

Now this is the kind of story we don’t really get to feature very often – a quiet story, a story of love, of pain – both physical and emotional, and yet also a story of reconciliation, of perseverance, and joy.

It’s a story about Don’t Ask – Don’t tell, about war, about art, about survival, but also about how sometimes love and happiness find their own unconventional ways into our lives.

Blow Pony and Hot Pink Mass, the weekend in review

The real faces of Blow Pony, Chelsea Starr and Blake Cedric. Photo courtesy Wesley Walton

I have only heard that the weekend started off right with Red Cap’s Bootie mashup party on Friday. Alas, these old bones needed at least one day of rest where I remained in my own neighborhood to attend a mellow house party. But I did make it out the following two nights starting with Portland’s reigning king of mixed queer nights Blow Pony on Saturday.

While I am plenty nostalgic, I have nothing but love for the success of my favorite events. Blo Po has clearly blown up. And while I am very happy for them, their new found fame may have some detrimental effects to my formerly favorite night.

Artemis Chase

Along with the return of popular Logo show RuPaul’s Drag Race, returned Portland’s own Drag Race with host Poison Waters earlier this February. At the end of the series, one contestant will come out on top to claim the grand prize which includes $1,000.00 cash and round trip airfare, lodging, and VIP party passes for 2.

One of the favored contestants, Artemis Chase, is a much beloved local queen who almost made it onto the national show. But today even her race towards the local championship has ended as she has pulled out of the local competition.

The return of Beau Breedlove

Beau Breedlove in a shoot he did for Unzipped magazine

If you thought you heard enough about the mayor’s sex scandal with hottie Beau Breedlove, then you were wrong. Not only is Mr. Scandal back in Portland, after so unceremoniously leaving us for the east coast, but he also has a forthcoming book. The as-yet-untitled tome will be a

…reflection on the events of my life before, during and after the ‘scandal’ surrounding my relationship with Sam Adams…

In addition, the book will cover a broader look at people who have been in similar situations to mine, and how stereotypes both play into the media attention as well as are used as tools against victims. This book is a memoir, and an insight into the change that the GLBTQ community needs to see in the way we are portrayed and represented.

American remake of German gay soap opera to be set in Portland

'Christian & Olli'

Verbotene Liebe (also known as Forbidden Love, often abbreviated to VL) is a Rose d’Or Award winning German television soap opera that has become popular enough for Americans to want to steal.

Like the UK’s Queer as Folk before them, American producers have seen a good Euro idea and adapted it to our very own market. Pittsburgh in comparison to Manchester didn’t quite work. But we’ll see how Portland plays as a gay soap setting.
