 'Precious'
So, 2009 wasn’t a huge year for film but we do have a couple Oscar hopefuls. It may not be the shoe-in that we all thought Brokeback Mountain would be, but perhaps a little less drama is ok.
5 – Big Gay Musical
It’s big, and gay, and a musical. That alone gets it 5th place. Slow year…
4 – Hannah Free and Patrik Age 1.5
A Swedish gay couple who expect to adopt a toddler and instead get a teen and a May/December affair starring Sharon Gless make a sweet little heartwarming duo at the number 4 spot. Gayness and family struggles are a worldwide phenomenon.

'Glee's openly gay character Kurt in football uniform
It would be tough to beat last year’s lineup of LGBT on TV but 2009 has some decent contenders. Alas, none of them have the same newsy sex appeal as last year’s winner Rachel Maddow but how often does a butch hottie grace our anchor seats?
5 – The sci-fi outbreak of Heroes, Stargate Universe, and Virtuality
Sci-fi can often push the envelope more easily by creating gay metaphors in addition to all the present day issues they address with fictions of possibility. In the past couple years, however, we are getting some actual queer characters. Claire the cheerleader had some sapphic love on Heroes, Stargate Universe features two ongoing gay characters and Virtuality, though unlikely to be picked up featured a gay couple in addition to the hotness of Clea DuVall.

 Lady Gaga
Many of us have been traumatized by the year 2009, and we are happy to leave the aughts behind in favor of a brand new decade. And this is probably why it has taken me so long to will myself to look back at the good times. So now, in the slow news months of late winter I am finally getting around to profiling some of last year’s best music, movies, and television.
First up, the Top 5 Gay Albums of 2009. Stay tuned for some of the last decade’s bests towards the end of the month.

HEARTTHROB: gay people throb and have hearts too, you know
We all know that valentines day is a bunch of silly stuff, sillier than silly string, not quite as silly as, say, Tiger Woods text messages or Donald Trump’s toupee but still, pretty silly.
It’s still an exceptable excuse for a party though, so a local hero DJ squad consisting of, wait for it, Lifepartner, Freddie Fagula, Girlfriends and Gottesfinger are getting together to bring you HEARTTHROB: A HOMOEROTIC VALENTINES. Yay! Sounds heartwarming.

Ingrid Elizabeth of Coyote Grace will be performing solo this weekend in Seattle.
The first time I ever heard Coyote Grace, I asked them if they would play at my wedding. A friend took a group of us to see the show at a downtown pub when I was living in Flagstaff, AZ. It was one of those experiences that takes you by surprise: I wasn’t expecting to discover an extraordinary “acoustic downhome due” on such a mediocre downhome Sunday afternoon. I wasn’t expecting to get tipsy either, but what else can you do on a warm weekend day when surprised with the kind of music that shifts your entire perspective?
Before Coyote Grace kicks off their 2010 Southwest tour, Ingrid Elizabeth—the soulful, sultry bassist of the duo—will be featured in an event a little closer to home, in Portland’s neighboring town, Seattle. XOXO: Love Notes From the Margins (or, A Queerly Crumbled Valentine’s Evening) is the third show produced by TumbleMe Productions. After its initial two sold out shows, “TumbleMe is proud to bring the perfect date night or anti-date night for Valentine’s lovers and haters alike, in one of Seattle’s most intimate venues.”
On an unseasonably warm Portland afternoon, I caught up with Elizabeth on a lawn in Northeast Portland to talk about her solo performance, the up-coming Coyote Grace tour, and what music she’s been delighting in lately.

Aw, Valentine’s Day can be so cute you throw up in your mouth a little. And who knows what to expect from those freaky performance artists at Homomentum when they take on the pink and red clashing holiday. Puke is not out of the question, especially when organizer and emcee Max Voltage makes the claim that this month’s Love Bugs has the biggest lineup yet with Under the Radar, […]
Queer Agenda vodcast #2 is a little late folks but all the more timely, perhaps, as the big blokes get a clothing swap this Thursday, so too, can the plus sized ladies have a store their very own when we visit the girls at Fat Fancy. Check out their website at http://fatfancyfashions.com/
We also check in with local queer aerosol artist Rai Villanueva as she prepares for her shows up now at Tiger Bar (317 Northwest Broadway) and the Diesel Store (30 Northwest 12th Ave).

You wouldn't believe how tough it is to find pictures of famous fashionable fat men...
This month’s video podcast features plus size fashion shop Fat Fancy and the trend is quickly taking hold of the Rose City. But men, dykes, and masculine identified individuals of all sorts are also getting into the fashion game. And though there is some men’s duds at the FF plus sized gentlemen still have few options besides the big and tall section of the Men’s Warehouse.
This Thursday begins concocting the remedy with the Husky Clothing Swap / Bear Bowl at Interstate Lanes (6049 North Interstate Ave) starting at 6:30pm.

 'Caprica'
As gayness becomes increasingly familiar in our lives, so it is reflected on the small screen. And despite that the American TV-watching population was most likely watching one of the straightest (well, if you don’t account for subtext) television events yesterday, there were most definitely some queer weekend highlights.
Firstly, let me indulge my obsession with science fiction. Though not nearly as epic as the recent SyFy hit Battlestar Galactica, new series Caprica is pretty interesting. This week they very nonchalantly introduced a gay couple as part of the tough-as-nails and mob-like Adama family. Ain’t no Tauron sissies in this touching family scene.

…with tales from the dark side of dating. It’s Not Me, It’s You takes place tonight at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne) and celebrates all that is awkward, bad and downright shameful about dating. An antidote for the upcoming V-Day or a reason to be grateful for your perfect little love muffin, these storytellers have some real tales to spin. And they are all devastastingly true. Even better, I make a brief appearance in one. Let’s see if you can guess which…
We’ve all had them: dates that go terribly awry. An evening of personal stories told live onstage, unscripted, just telling you the painful truth. You’ll leave either feeling grateful for your current relationship or with the realization that being single isn’t so bad after all.
