Trans Sri-Lankan hip-hop artist D’Lo at Reed

D'Lo

Every bit as hot and talented as fellow Tamil MIA, political theatre artist/writer and music producer D’Lo unleashes his spoken word and hip hop act on the students on Reed tonight at 7pm in the campus chapel and tomorrow in Winch Hall at 1pm for a workshop.

With an interesting combination of pure Los Angeles street knowledge and a BA from UCLA in Ethnomusicology and a graduate of New York’s School of Audio Engineering, D’Lo brings important political and ideological discussions to a genre that needs an infusion of the genuine. This “…hella well-rounded G” tries to explain his synthesis of the disparate by saying,

La Roux here Monday at the Wonder Ballroom

La Roux's Elly Jackson

Famous among lesbians for their lead singer Elly Jackson‘s Annie Lennox-like androgyny, the emo-electronic La Roux make a Portland appearance this Monday at the Wonder Ballroom (128 NE Russell St).

Translating roughly to “redhead” La Roux, although a duo, is quite dominated by the amazing voice of the ginger-haired Jackson. Sporting a goofy and gravity defying Flock of Seagulls swoop atop her head and a consistently serious expression it might be easy to think that La Roux is a gimmick. I assure you, it’s not.

Homomentum’s end (or at least break) is nigh

The performance hilarity and audacity of Pants Off Production‘s Homomentum series kept our cockles warm through the winter. Alas, and the trees begin to bud and queer nightlife is taking off with a host of new nights popping up it is time to bid our familiar pal a farewell.

The season-ending theme of Leather & Lace gives ample opportunity to take advantage of our spring awakened hearts yearnings with sensual performance art. With acts such as Beefcake Burlesque, Felice Shays, Celestial Creatures and a special homo-lay-dancer filled extravaganza lead by Katrina O’Brien I have no doubt the ‘momentum will go out with a bang.

Tegan and Sara bring lezhipsters together at the Keller

Tegan and Sara. Photo by Pamela Littky

Twin hottie hipster folk-rock faves Tegan and Sara will be bringing the ladies down to the Keller Auditorium this Thursday the 8th when they take the stage with openers Steel Train & Holly Miranda. And while the confinement to seats might damper the spirit slightly, there will still most certainly be a plethora of doe-eyed baby dykes swooning over the sounds of the dual talented singer/songwriters.

Though I have sung the praises of both their most recent release Sainthood as well as 2007’s The Con I have never actually gotten to see them live. So this week should be an interesting experience as I finally get to see the pair I have dubbed, “Soulful, skillful, intense and at times downright strange…these girls have somehow managed to capture our hearts in a way that is certainly odd, possibly endearing, and yet a lot less sappy than I would expect.”

Tonight: The last Double Down!?

Kaki's leaving Double Down! Come say goodbye!

Kaki Marshall, River City Rider and club promoter extraordinaire (Double Down, Poptart, LubeJob, etc) , is retiring from putting on Double Down! Double Down is the biggest queer dance night at Holocene along with Gaycation and will be sorely missed – hopefully this will open a spot for another fabulous weekend night – but I’ve also heard that someone else […]

Cherie Currie at Portland 'Runaways' premiere

Movie stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning next to their real life counterparts Joan Jett and Cherie Currie

New tough-as-nails chick flick The Runaways tells the story of Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. It’s already playing in theaters across the country, but PDX will have a special “premiere” to raise money for the Rock and Roll Camp for Girls Monday the 5th at the Hollywood Theater (4122 NE Sandy).

An Artsy Party this Friday

DJ Permanent Wave, aka Jenny Hoyston at last month's Art Party

Newly launched artfag club night Art Party is back for the third time this Friday the 2nd at Branx (315 SE 3rd). Hosts DJ Gottesfinger and Permanent Wave aim to bring a combination of experimental music and performance art to an often pop music focused club scene. Their solution is to bring their artrock sensibilities to the dancefloor and Friday’s will be a soiree not to be missed.

Noted experimental musicians Tunnels (Nick Bindeman, he of Jackie O Motherfucker and Eternal Tapestral),
and White Rainbow (local stalwart Adam Forkner, he of too many experimental projects to name) will be
performing alongside Sexual Champions, an all improv, all female brass ensemble headed by Jenny Hoyston
(she of Erase Errata, and too many other musical projects to name).

PDX Boom caused by homosexuals? #pdxboom

Did collapsing homos cause the PDXboom?

Did collapsing homos cause the PDXboom?

Was the loud boom heard around 8 PM last night caused by Portland area gays and lesbians simultaneously collapsing after a long weekend of partying? Or is it because we’re such sinners or something? (There was a lot of sinning going on at BP. Apparently it was fun to watch, somehow I missed it. I was too busy dancing)

I’m not sure, but if you heard the boom, (I did down at Reed College, it was loud, and stuff rattled), but we have a handy-dandy PDX Boom map link where you can add your boomspot. (look, i’m creating new lingo)

Anyway, the weekend…
