  Today is the 22nd Annual World AIDS Day, a time for communities to come together to ensure we not only that we recognize the 25 million individuals lost to HIV and AIDS, but the 33 million global citizens living with the HIV virus today.
In the US, there are over 1.1 Million Americans living with HIV and more than 20% of those infected do not even know they carry the virus. It is estimated by the CDC that 56,000 new infections are occurring annually, that’s one new infection every nine and a half minutes in the US due to a disease that is completely preventable.

Thousands of people turned out for this year's AIDS Walk to support the efforts of Cascade AIDS Project.
Yesterday morning crowds gathered in Pioneer Square to walk in solidarity for Cascade AIDS Project’s annual AIDS Walk. Teams and individuals raised enough funds to meet CAP’s financial goal for the event (total funds are still being tallied and will be available here by Oct. 13th).

This is gonna be a busy weekend.
 Some bear denizens lounging at BEARTOWN's "Underbear" underwear party. Just to recap this last week, the bears partied hard, Mayor Sam Adams and newly appointed Police Chief Mike Reese swooped into the Q-Center to announce new measures to bring safety to the queer community, and gays gathered to sell their goods at a bar.

Mayor Sam Adams descended into the halls of the Q-Center to announce the newest steps the city and Portland Police are taking to promote safety for the queer community. The celebration was preceded by several well-attended events including an evening of poetry, music, and dance at the Miracle Theatre as well as a literary event drawing on the talents of special guests from NYC: Charles Rice-González and Charlie Vázquez at Aura Nightclub.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community and friends are invited to participate in a Portland Plan town hall event on April 12, 2010. Mayor Sam Adams will lead the discussion, which is co-facilitated by Jeana Frazzini of Basic Rights Oregon, Kendall Clawson of the Q Center, Michael Kaplan of Cascade AIDS Project, and representatives from the Sexual Minorities Youth Resource Center (SMYRC).

 Sam Adams Here at qPDX we really do like to have fun. That often means that our coverage is entertainment and event heavy. But 2009 saw plenty of news headlines as well. I’m sure it will come as no surprise to anyone what scandal fills the top spot, but let’s run down 4 more items as well before we repeat the obvious.
5 – Media drama, deaths and rebirths
In the beginning of 2009 the implosion of Oregon’s first and only LGBT print publication, Just Out seemed imminent. They had just made an unpopular recommendation to oust the sex scandal embattled Mayor Adams followed by the departure of several important art and editorial staffers over pay disputes. But the publication survived, albeit with a much tinier staff. Despite a so-called dying journalism industry several new local queer publications started up around this time. Indeed, though qPDX has was created in 2005, we, too, had to reinvent ourselves following my layoff from OregonLive.com. And I think independence suits us.

The general consensus is that 2009 has been a tough year. No one knows that better than the sex scandal embroiled Mayor of Portland Sam Adams. But unlike cynics like Just Out and I, Adams exits the year on a positive video note. Oh, you bouncy bicycling optimists…is it teenage sex that makes you cheery?
