2 Girls, 1 Podcast ep#7: well groomed and dangerous

This week 2 Girls, 1 Podcast records from the bar which makes us even more ridiculous in our commentary, like bringing up the lack of Grindr for women (“um, lesbians invented grinding”) and the already escalating gay gang war. […]

It’s a weekend for Lovers, Lezzers doing stand up, Bears and Booty Calls

Lavender Mirror

Thursday

Lovers benefit show – I love the combination of live music and DJs to begin with but when it’s also a benefit for a community member without healthcare its a triple win. Not to mention the lineup is incredible. Lovers are probably the best Portland queer band at the moment, (their last album was our number 1 of 2010), and Anaturale is some damn good hip hop I haven’t seen around these parts in years. Brittle Bones the q folks behind the decks are also stellar. With such a diverse group how can you not check it out?

Friday

Peep Show hosted by Fannie Mae Darling – The outlandish drag persona of Fannie Mae manages to bridge that drag divide of monstrous and beautiful quite magically. So while it may be sad to lose Peep Show’s usual hosts Darling is the perfect PS insert. Apparently the theme this month is sex, but isn’t always with Fannie? (And with Peep Show for that matter?)

Femme2012 conference call for submissions

Femme2012: Pulling the Pieces Together is a multi-threaded conference and forum for those who think about, talk about, and create Femme as a queer gender and identity.

Following our Femme2006, 2008, and 2010 conferences in San Francisco, Chicago, and Oakland, where hundreds of femmes and allies gathered for workshops, panels, films, visual art galleries, and performances, we again invite femmes of all kinds and their allies to continue the conversation by participating in Femme 2012 as presenters and participants. We are invested in having Femme2012 continue to reflect the diversity and complexity of femme gender, identity, and contributions. We hope for this conference to be a community-building event, as well as an exploration and celebration of what it means to build and live queer femme identities.

LIPDX, the New Blog That Will Showcase Portland’s Queer Female Community

LIPDX Team

A new soon-to-be-addictive tumblr blog, Lesbians in PDX, is launching this Wednesday, January 18. LIPDX, as it’s called, is run by Portlanders Alex, Rachael, and Ashley, who have brought the fun of the already popular Lesbians in San Francisco up north to our lovely queer city. To get a glimpse at what’s to come, check out lesbiansinsf.tumblr.com, and just imagine how great it will be when it’s our own community showcased.

I had a chance to speak with Alex from the LIPDX Team about the blog and its upcoming launch.

qPDX: What is lesbiansinPDX all about?

Alex: LesbiansinPDX will be a tumblr blog that showcases the real and diverse queer women of Portland.  It works through community participation. Those who want to be on the blog contact us and we set up a photo shoot. All we ask is for 3 fun facts.  It is a great way for the community to get to know one another.  It’s a fun way to show the world what lovely queer ladies there are in the beautiful city of Portland.

No Saturday Mail? Portland Marches for USPS.

USPS March January 3, 2012

Is this Goodbye?

Congressman Issa, R-CA (one of the richest men in Congress) has proposed to end  Saturday delivery of mail. As a result to Issa’s proposal, there will be jobs lost and hours cut for the postal employees. There has been public outrage from many different states. Rep. Green, D-TX announced that he found a particular pattern of targeting the low-income neighborhoods for closures.

Every single facility mentioned is located in a lower income and predominately minority neighborhood. Nearly 30% of the all the postal facilities listed for consolidation are located in five states, with Texas leading the way at 222 potential closures. Almost without exception, this pattern holds for our nation’s other great cities as well.

Getting back to it (together but apart)

Right before I leave Captain’s place in Portland, I start revving up for my return to Brooklyn.

It’s been something I’ve consistently done, not exactly consciously, but as I sit on his couch at my laptop thinking about how in a few days I will be back across the country, I want to start scheduling time with people and activities. It sort of eases the pain and separation anxiety of saying good-bye.

I’ll be the first to say being in a bicoastal relationship can be weird. It’s strange to spend almost all your time with someone for a couple of weeks at a time and then separate and get back into a rhythm of e-mails, texts and Skype dates.
