Last year's Gender (Free) For All march. Photo by Heather Smith
Gender (Free) For All recently changed its name to TransEnough, and it looks like the group may have many transitions on its plate, even in the midst of a summer full of Pride. This year’s gathering, which already splintered off from June’s Pride celebrations last year, has not been widely publicized and will not include a march at all.
This isn’t to say you shouldn’t go. At tomorrow’s rally in Unthank Park elected officials will assure us of their support and hopefully, give us examples of what they’ve accomplished and Amy Ruiz, LGBTQ Liaison from the Office of the Mayor, will read a proclamation establishing August 1-7 as Trans Week of Celebration. The lineup also includes speakers from Q Patrol, much loved Katie Carter and Amber Rollins from In Other Words, and comedy from Belinda Carroll.

Winner Kaj-Anne Pepper struts his stuff
The 2nd Annual Homo’s Got Talent competition took place this year in the courtyard of the Jupiter Hotel, a big improvement over last year’s confined space. And though the program was long, and the exquisite winning performance by Kaj-Anne Pepper and crew at the very beginning, there were some real quality acts, and some even better costumes. You can relive, or […]
Mendi tabling for Butch Voices at Latino Gay Pride
This is the big call for ButchVoices’ 2010 Saturday night showcase performance! The show will be on Saturday, Oct. 2nd. Come be part of the action! This is an evening to celebrate people who identify OR perform on the butch spectrum– trans-masculine, studs, aggressives, bois, shy soft butch, genderqueer, androgynes, etc.
We welcome all submissions for performance– anything goes that can happen on a stage. Ensemble dance, performance art, drag numbers, film/video presentations, music performance, comedy, hand whistling, spoken word– show your manly, boyish, tranny, genderqueer stuff to a big queer PDX audience. We welcome you to interpret the labels of “butch” or “masculine” in a creative way; we hope for the evening to be engaging, challenging, and even a bit controversial. The Saturday showcase is open to anyone, with a regional focus on the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada.
Already booked for Saturday’s show is Ivan E. Coyote, famed queer storyteller & writer. For more information about Ivan’s work, go to http://ivanecoyote.com/about.

Sam DJing at Bearracuda
I did not personally know Sam Storicks, the popular Bearracuda DJ was a much loved member of our community. And certainly my heart goes out, especially, to his partner Gregg Kerr in these difficult times following his passing. A close friend, Bennie Tan, posted a heartfelt piece over at Fabulous PDX and I have included some of it here.
Numb. That is what I’m feeling right now. I’m sitting here on my bed at 2:21 am on July 24th thinking, “What the FUCK just happened?!” I was going to try and get some sleep but I can’t. Sam Storicks, one of the most fantabulous people I’ve ever had the pleasure to know, passed away at 10:00pm last night, July 23, 2010.
I’ve been trying to process what just happened this past week. From him being found unconscious on Monday, July 19th to the recent, sudden turn for the worse…

Let's have a gay ol' time at the Washougal River!
Tonight
Do the Dark – Yes, do it. Guest DJ Nolita (Fruitcake) is in town from Oakland and it’s gonna be sick. Oh yeah, and weinie roasting on the back deck. What more could a summer queer ask for? If you don’t already know this party you should.
Friday
Need and Bangs reunion benefit – I know a lot of you will be here earlier in the night, but you can still dance it up after right?
No Shade – Yes, just keep going. No drama-rama party with a great mix of fabulous peeps. And I really love that they include some mixes to get you in the spirit. I’d totally play it at the pre-funk. Oh yeah, and in case you didn’t have enough Nolita already, she’ll be here too. And you can never get enough.

Mosquitos are in attack mode right now
Time for a little public service announcement. Not a queer issue per se, but definitely local! If you’ve hit up Sauvie Island or many of the other local beaches lately, you’ll have noticed that the mozzie population is intense and hard to discourage even with bug spray. Sauvie’s is especially bad. Even a few minutes exposure […]
Hmm, looks familiar
According to a study released today and published across the internet on blogs and sites such as this one, you’re in good shape. Why? You positively represent the findings of said study, which let a homo know that we are comparatively more likely to read blogs on a regular basis, which is awesome. Shameless plug: It’s also a perfect reason to consider advertising with us. You can find out more about that here).
No news on bisexual, trans identified, or low income folks as per usual (or combinations thereof), and obvs they don’t tell us how they define “gay and lesbian”, but if you can overlook that then it is actually kinda interesting.

DirtBag at The Know, Portland
Ok, so Thursday isn’t technically the weekend yet, except when it is! Last weekend the hottest weather we’ve had here in fair gayPortland, and plenty of us used this opportunity for suntan catchup, chillin’ at the beach. Here a little weekend review in case you missed some of it..!
Thursday saw the premiere of DirtBag! at The Know, which has moved from the Blue Parrot / Foggy Notion due to the recent change of hands. 2/3rds of qPDX.com stopped by after a gay old time at the Sandy river in all our sandy, sunburnt glory. This DirtBag was also a fundraiser for TuffLuck, the trans-owned and operated coffee shop located inside In Other Words bookshop, a fact that sadly was not as promoted as it could have been, but still had plenty of folks in attendance.

Q Patrol Portland
Q Patrol, a local initiative started in the wake of recent attacks on LGBTQ Portlanders has announced that they will be holding their first training session at the Q Center. According to the founders, the first training session will focus on” responsibilities, duties, and organization–and there will be a brief question and answer session following the training presentation”.
The organization is queer-run and affiliated […]
I had this foggy notion i went BENT at faggy nation!
It hasn’t been long since the Blue Parrot first fluttered it’s way into many a Portland gay’s party calendar. A little off the beaten track and tucked away pretty far up north, no one could predict that this local neighbourhood bar would turn into the party location motivating deepest SE bound queers (me) to hoof on up north. (Which is kinda the same thing we all said when gay pizza started happening.)
But: The Blue Parrot’s basic charms of queers, gritty music, tons o’dancing, cheap drinks and a little backyard, along with two of the most promising recent gay, lesbian and trans party upstarts, DIRTBAG! and BENT, made this diamond in the rough shine on hard, bright and crazy.
