uNumbered by TJ Norris

Milepost 5 (900 NE 81st Ave), an “intentional community centered around creative individuals” is already a striking art projects in Portland’s Montavila neighborhood. One building, the Lofts, is already finished and another, the Studios, is in the works. The 51,000 square foot Studios building is phase 2 of Milepost 5; formerly the Baptist Manor Retirement Home, which was built in stages between 1928 and 1956.

Beginning today a 10 day art and music extravaganza will introduce the burgeoning building a help bring Milepost 5 to the forefront of Portland’s creative consciousness. Over 100 artists have been invited to turn the yet-to-be-renovated rooms of The Studios building into three floors of installations and exhibits. The fest includes live music by local bands, theater and performance art, artist round tables, and daily guided tours of the 100+ exhibits.

Fruitcake and Gaycation queer dance off

fruitcakeI hate it when this happens. Portland is so gaymazing that some of the best events must overlap. But still I know these folks all know each other. We couldn’t make one dance night on Saturday? Nevertheless, you should try to make it to at least 1 of these fantastic events.

The competing club nights Gaycation at Holocene (1001 SE Morrison) and Fruitcake at Rumpspankers (700 NE Dekum) are both great alternatives for those of us who couldn’t make the trek down to Homo A Gogo.

‘Imagine’ a new underage nightclub

imagineWhen I was a wee gay in the 90s I assumed every sizeable city had an all ages queer nightclub. Alas, as shady at the City Nightclub may have been I should have been more appreciative of its dark hallways and raucous drag shows.

Indeed an incarnation of this club still exists today. It has moved to a much cheerier and open (with windows!) location on SW Park Avenue and changed its name (after a series of missteps) to The Escape.

Saying Goodbye to Kick/Ball/Change

Catitude at the last Kick/Ball/Change

This Sunday saw the final installment of the queer dance extravaganza, Kick/Ball/Change. The performance, which included regulars such as Untrained, I, Catitude, and Beefcake Burlesque, also featured newcomers Under the Radar and a sexy solo by Carlee Smith. And though there were moments of hilarity and fabulousness, the performance was also tinged with sadness. And now we must be in mourning.

Lubing it up for charity

Lube Job at Red Cap Garage

We here at qPDX have already sung the praises of Red Cap’s (1035 SW Stark) Wednesday night Lube Job party, but there are a few things you might not know that will make attending tomorrow’s hot summer night essential.

Wrestling in a kiddie pool full of slippery stuff might be fun, but it has a purpose as well.Hundreds of dollars have already been raised for local organizations and there’s plenty of room for more. All you have to do is send a slick representative.

New music video for The Gossip’s “Love Long Distance”

I’m not exactly sure what balloon-headed, unitard-wearing, rollerskating has to do with love, but the video for the Gossip’s most recent release “Love Long Distance” (from the brand-spanking new album Music for Men) is charming and wonderful nevertheless. It’s worth watching for the keytar alone, but really the animated floating heads of Beth Ditto, Brace Payne and Hannah Blillie are ridiculously cute.

Love Long Distance […]
