a little red dress review

The Red Dress Party is an annual charity event whose proceeds go towards supporting gay youth, and helps friends, neighbors and family members living with HIV/AIDS and other serious diseases.

It’s an annual event here in Portland, and in 2009 over 2000 people attended (according to their website) Sadly, No one from QPDX.com could make it, but in tried-and-true Portland DIY style, I decided to quiz one of my favourite barmen, the lovely Steve from Crush, about his experiences at this year’s Red Dress Party, and luckily he obliged me!

Facebook rejects lesbian film ad

Like many of you, i’m a facebook addict. I never really got into myspace as much as many did, but I really love facebook. It’s less cluttered than myspace. It’s easy to use. It’s easy to find people.  All my friends are on it. Squabbles over changes in the user agreement aside, and no, I don’t like the new format either, Facebook is still a great marketing/networking tool (and a bit of a timesuck). But this here issue is something that made me pay attention. Apparently, it seems, Facebook has a rejected an ad deemed “too racy” despite the fact that the creators claim many other ads on FB are a lot racier. Is the ad being targetted for being “too gay”? Is FB turning homophobic? Will this be the next AmazonFail?

From the switched.com:

Facebook Rejects Lesbian Film Ad

Facebook Rejects Lesbian Film Ad

We’re not gonna deny that the advertisement to the right would certainly be described as “sexy,” but it’s hardly lewd or inappropriate. So why exactly did Facebook reject this ad for ‘And Then Came Lola,’ a film targeted at a lesbian audience?

don’t call it a comeback, err, upgrade

over the next week you, loyal reader, may see a bit of a slowdown in blogging due to the absence of 2/3rds of PDX. While Alley is busy networking in NYC and Adina is busy getting scrummed in Missoula (rugby!) I will be blogging as much as I can and also working on a bunch of technical stuff regarding the site.

Pardon the dust while we remodel, etc. Hopefully, […]

Gay Square Dance @ The Village Ballroom!

To be honest, my first reaction when my friend asked me to come to gay square dancing with them was amused disbelief. Square dancing? Isn’t that a country thing? With queermos? In Portland?

Square Dancing @ The Village Ballroom

Square Dancing @ The Village Ballroom

I felt way to British (read: stiff-upper-lip) to be seen howdying around to country music, but, if ever learned anything, getting over myself sometimes is a good thing. Rejecting everything outright isn’t very sexy. It’s also not the foundation for diverse journalistic coverage of this awesome town! So although I skipped the cowboy boots, I did go to the square dancing, and although I didn’t get to dance (I can be shy, and my shoulder is out of order) I did make a promise to try it next time!

Gay monks behaving badly?

Not really a Portland issue per se, but this article about gay monks in thailand being reprimanded for wearing tight clothes and having flamboyant eyebrows made me laugh…

From the BBC website:

A Buddhist preacher in Thailand has announced plans for new guidelines aimed at curbing the flamboyant behaviour of gay and transgender monks.

The “good manners” curriculum – the country’s first – is being introduced in the […]

From Oprah / CNN: Why women are leaving men for women

I just stumbled across this interesting article on why, it seems, apparently, that women are leaving men to pursue relationships with women. Personally, I think this isn’t anything new (insert reference to historical celebrity here) but what definitely seems to be changing is the way the media is dealing with celebrities getting imto homolicious relationships. After the first shock, for example, it seemed that the paps were focusing more […]

A quiet weekend, G Spot at Crush, E Room

Last weekend was intense. I went to FAME on wednesday, the RedCap for RuPaul’s drag race on Thursday, Crave and Portland is Burning on Friday, and Gaycation @ Holocene on Saturday.

G-SPOT @ Crush Bar on Thursdays

G-SPOT @ Crush Bar on Thursdays

No wonder my eyes (lots of cute people around), legs (dancing!!), arms (a boy’s gotta drink, no), and wallet are feeling pretty tired. And I know some of you (Hi Max! Hi Alley!) did part of that circuit with me, so you’re probably feeling the same way.So the good news is that this weekend seems to be a slow one, with only Fruitcake and a benefit for Rock Camp on our radar so far. That gives us all plenty of time to withdraw and regroup…
