Reeves and Phoenix in a still from the original 'My Own Private Idaho'
I definitely think James Franco has earned his toaster for being an honorary gay. Following his many gay onscreen portrayals Franco has teamed up with local queer film director Gus Van Sant for 2 art films in an exhibition called “Unfinished,” set to show at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills this weekend through April 9th.
Both are based on Van Sant’s 1991 classic My Own Private Idaho starring Keanu Reeves and the late River Phoenix, and are directed by James Franco. Endless Idaho, a 12 hour Cremaster–like monster, features edited outtakes, deleted scenes, alternate takes and behind-the-scenes footage from the movie as well as interviews with actual street hustlers. The score is by Luke Paquin and Tim O’Keefe. It’s a “behind the scenes” behemoth that isn’t like to keep the average fan’s interest for 12 hours, but is a goldmine for the truly devoted film process buff.

Gus Van Sant's 'Restless'
Quirky but cute weirdos have been all the rage in Portland for decades but they’re appeal is becoming more widespread. Local director Gus Van Sant has been introducing the world to loveable freaks for decades as well but has also hot the mainstream.
His upcoming film Restless fits this bill perfectly. It features an oddly symmetrical boy-girl couple, one of whom is sick, or dying or mentally ill while the other sees a teenage ghost and attends random funerals. It looks happy, sad and heart-warming…a chick flick for the Stumptown set.

Sean Penn in ‘Milk’
Alas, yours truly did not get to fly south and hobnob with the celebrities, political activists, film reviewers and Portlanders that attended last night’s world premiere of Gus Van Sant’s Milk in the Castro district.
But at least Oregonian writer Kristi Turnquist was there, and has nothing but good things to say about the film.

Local filmmaker Gus Van Sant will film 'Restless' locally
Local filmmaker Gus Van Sant has, no doubt, made it big. But though the native portrays Portland and the Pacific Northwest so elegantly on screen, not all his filming is done here. So for a local film industry that struggles at the best of times it is most certainly welcome news to hear that Van Sant’s next film, Restless, will be filmed here in Oregon.

Josh Brolin (left) was nominated for Best Supporting actor while Sean Penn gets a nod for Best Actor
While Portland’s gay community might be mourning one politician, we can celebrate the legacy of another. Today Milk, the film starring Sean Penn (and an amazing supporting cast) and directed by local, gay filmmaker Gus Van Sant was nominated for a whopping 8 Oscars.

As per my post last week about Just Out’s most eligible, I wanted to give an update and share a couple of reader suggestions.
V Day finally came last Wednesday and I was too busy to notice it right away, but it seems the Willy also did a most eligible spread in honor of the day of love. Even if my head was in the clouds, however, it did not go without notice. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a catfight but Just Out did seem to feel the need to say "We had that idea first." I have a feeling it has more to do with publishing schedule. (Who knows who really liked The Shins way before they were popular first?) And actually, I thought their choice of DJ Puppet as bachelor was a good one and would have been a much better queer choice for Just Out.
As far as reader suggestions I only got two, but they were pretty good. One was cheery faced Commissioner Sam Adams, who had crossed my mind, although I always assumed was taken. I have absolutely no verification of this so I really don’t know why I took that for granted. The other was bad boy (grown) filmmaker Gus Van Sant. I don’t know his status either, or if he would be looking but a profile seems appropriate nonetheless, even if the fella is unattainable.

In episode 2 they fall in with a cult leader played by guest star Jason Sudeikis, center.
This summer the Independent Film Channel announced that it would be producing a sketch comedy show starring Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen and our own rock goddess Carrie Brownstein, called Portlandia. Now not only does it have an air date, but video clips to give us a sneak peek and Brownstein singing fantastically silly theme song.
Premiering January 21st and continuing every Friday at 10:30/9:30 central, Portlandia introduces us to ourselves, our adbsurd, PDX selves. Each episode’s character-based shorts draw viewers into “Portlandia,” the creators’ dreamy campy rendering of the town we know and love.

This is the weekend that all the gay ghouls come out of the woodwork for All Hallow’s Eve mayhem. So whether your pleasure is tricks or treats there’s bound to be a party, or 2, for you.
Thursday
Cafeteria, HomoDeluxe and Drop Shop – Thursday isn’t particularly spooky, although I have no doubts there will be some excellent costumes at “lunch trays and ghoulish gays” themed Cafeteria. Dead lunch ladies? Zombie assistant principals? Vampire cheerleaders?
Friday
Crave‘s Halloween Bash – Sexy undead go go dancers and the chance to show your own go go off with costume prizes in several categories like originality, scariest, sexiest, nerdiest and cutest couple. The featured drink of the night is ‘Monster Punch,’ sweet/sour and strong, and it’s only 2 bucks before 10. Plus VIP passes and incentives for friends makes this the it party for girls.
