Lions and Tigers and Bearracuda, oh my!

bearracudaTonight brings a much beloved night up from the Bay for the bear and cut set. Bearracuda sets up shop tonight at Rotture (315 SE 3rd) and the rumor mill swirls that another bear-friendly night, Blow Pony, may also be moving to the eastside industrial  hot spot.

Bearracuda began 3 years ago as a fun, friendly dance party for bears, cubs and other “wildlife.” The alterna-friendly event was voted “Best Club for Queer Men” by San Francisco’s #1 weekly paper, The Guardian, in 2008. For a city so saturated with gay bars, circuit clubs and rainbow overload, Bearracuda was viewed as the spot for an attitude-free, sexy good time.

Art, music, benefit, Barberama…a good time

Mural work by Rai Villanueva

Keep your night summer weekend nights with a laid back Sunday evening show at queer-friendly hairdressers (is there another kind?) Barberama (3905 MLK). A benefit for local bartender, performer and personality Colyn Fernandez, this soiree serves a bigger purpose in the march toward transition.

Electro beats by DJ Machineversman sets the backdrop to the intensely primal paintings by aerosol ninja extraordinaire Rai […]

I can’t believe I almost forgot about tonight’s Men show at the Doug Fir (830 E Burnside). Le Tigre fans will recognize the electronic artsy dance fun spearheaded by JD Samson.

Here’s a little snippet from the current J/O Diversion:

Letter from Tom Potter concerning Sam Adams recall campaign

potter-adams

Former mayor Tom Potter with an out of focus current Mayor Adams in the foreground. Oregonian File Photo.

Former Mayor Tom Potter sent a letter to Just Out (ostensibly in order to reach the queer community) addressing his support of the Recall Sam Adams campaign.

To my friends in the sexual and gender minority community:

You may have heard that I am supporting the recall of Mayor Sam Adams. Of all the communities affected by Mayor Adams’ actions, this community has deep and personal feelings about the outcome. I know there are strong feelings on both sides of this issue. Because I love this community, I feel it’s important to tell you why I made my decision to support the recall of our Mayor.

Invasion got its gloss on…and it was great

All 4 signature drinks from left to right: Blueberry, Basil, Pomegranate and Lavender Glosses.

All I can say is that organizer Carlee Smith puts on a damn good party, and the newly opened Invasion Atomic Lounge (412 SW 4th) is the perfect swanky spot in which to host it.

Opening night was the perfect melding of delicious drinks and alcohol soaked nibbly things, wandering chit chat, and aurally satisfying relaxation. And even though I love to dance, the space to simple sit and chill was a nice change of pace from the usual cramped hot quarters of other bars.

More Sam and Beau: Adams recall Breedlove event planning gossip

Photo by Michael Lloyd / The Oregonian

Jasun Wurster (center) filed a petition to recall Mayor Sam Adams this morning. Attorney Erin Fitzgerald accompanied Wurster as they filed the papers with Andrew Carlstrom, left, of the city auditor's office. Michael Lloyd / The Oregonian

We are a bit slow on the uptake, seeing as it was two days ago that Jasun Wurster, leader of the campaign to recall Mayor Sam Adams, officially filed his paperwork. In our defense is was mostly due to technical site issues that barred us from entering anything at all!

Wurster and the rest of the Recall Sam Adams campaign have 90 days to collect 50,000 signatures. They have at least 17,800 so far.

The Invasion of a Gloss-y new ladies lounge night

invasion

Opening night at Invasion

Somehow, the capacity for puns that so enthrals fellow blogger PerryWinkle has taken residence in my own writing style, hence the potentially painful title of this post. Luckily, you can sooth your aching ears with the much smoother sounds and surroudings at Portland’s newest ladies’s night, Gloss, at Portland’s newest queer bar, Invasion.

Put on by Portland’s premiere Fatshionista Carlee Smith, of Fat Fancy, Gloss is a night more for schmoozing and socializing than dancing. And though Wednesdays may have some competition from the north, there are plenty of perks that make Gloss a great place to hang out.

Independence day gay dance parties

casual-encounters-4thMany of us started the patriotic party early with last night’s Delicious but it’s not time to take off those dancing shoes yet because you’ve got 2 days to go. You’ve already been alerted to tonight’s Gaytriotic Gaycation, but July 4th itself also busts out with the new Casual Encounters at Rotture. One of the best parts of this party is the amazing back patio, perfect for Willamette fireworks watching.

More Beau Breedlove/Sam Adams drama, and this time Beau’s angry…

Every time we think this horrific saga might just end, there’s another wonderful wrinkle. Local station KGW aired an interview with Breedlove wherein the young man expresses anger over more of Sam Adams lying and evasion.
