  Dan Ostergren's portraiture exhibit, 'Queers, Queens and Everything In-Between' opns Thursday at the East End Thursday
Portland Drag Race – Our local version of the popular drag star competition returns to Red Cap for its 4th 12 week run. The format will be a bit different. Each week a cash prize to the winner instead of one big prize at the end. So be prepared for some great new talent that was much to busy to commit to the long haul in past seasons.
Queers, Queens and Everything In Between art opening – Gender blending art photographer Dan Ostergren has taken some of the most loved queer portraits in town and this is the night to show them off. To help him celebrate the drag stars, local celesbians and other PDX characters he’s shot is a great 3 set show my up and comers directly below.

  Wayne Bund's photo series 'The Bathers' opens Saturday at East End Check back for our preview of Siren Nation festival, which will encompass the entirety of the weekend. As if you didn’t have enough to work with below.
Thursday
Thursday may not see a whole bunch of new nights but there’s always the stellar, incredibly danceable and Smiths-loving Dirtbag! at the Know (with special guest DJ Ill Camino) and the mellower Bobby Jo Valentine just down Alberta street making his Portland debut and the popular St Johns Thursday night gay hangout Sweet Tea where you can drink in southern style for only 4 bucks.
Friday
Deep Cuts – Only in its second iteration, DP has already become a music conisseurs good time. Good music without pretentiousness this party is hip and fun without being the kind of hip and fun that makes you uncomfortable, nervous and…no fun. I think that’s proved well enough by this week’s DJ of the Week, which profiles Cuts’ special guest DJ L-Train.

  "Bliss" by Atom Ion Sorry for the delay folks. I know these winners were announced over 2 weeks ago but I’ve been simultaneously recovering from and engaging in Pride both here and in Cali. But this year’s winners of the Just Out Pride Amateur Photo Contest were pretty amazing.
As far as I can tell there isn’t one Grand Prize winner this year but I’d like to highlight a couple of my favorite category winners. This year’s “Getting Graphic” winner was “Bliss” by Atom Ion, pictured to the right. This is what he had to say about it:

  Self Portrait by Brian Patrick from the 2010 contest Every year Just Out has an amateur photo contest; I was even a judge last year. Now it’s time to gear up for 2011. Here are the deets below:
Entries are limited to 10 per person. Any means of snapping that award-worthy original shot is fine: iPhone, digital camera or that old fashioned standard picture-taker, but we must receive a printed/hard copy — no digital submissions accepted. (We’d prefer you didn’t mat the image.)
On that note, no print size is too small or large — however, as we caution every year, your masterpieces will not be returned. To repeat, you won’t get ‘em back.
What you will get is recognition, one way or another. A winner will be selected for each of the six categories listed below, and all submissions will be displayed throughout the month of July at Q Center. Details on a forthcoming artists’ reception to come.

Catherine Opie talks about her current exhibition Girlfriends – Everyone loves a portrait they can relate to. For the queer community Opie’s work is the perfect synthesis of artistry and familiarity. Our very on heartfelt Annie Leibovits-style gaylebrity photographer. She pushes the envelope while making us queerdos feel uniquely at home.
Cafeteria – Hot lunch is back on the dance floor with this tiny bar crowded school daze celebrating gay night. Really great gender mix. You know this one.

  Pork chops with mustard sauce. Photo by Diana Edwards. Last night’s gastronomic get down was a culinary delight for queers and West Hillians alike. The atmosphere of Ethical Butcher Berlin Reed‘s meat meet-and-greet was the appropriately casual fancy that Portland so enjoys, and local farmers were rock stars and guests of honor. Diana Edwards and I caught the ‘Primal Cuts’ action on camera.
Bloodhound Photography‘s Ally Picard was also there to catch some snaps of food partygoers, but her real triumph was the small exhibition she displayed of photographs of Berlin and local farms.

  Grand Prize winner Untitled by J.T. Ollett So as not to subject herself and her staff to the anger that comes from not choosing your friends’ photos for prizes in the 2010 Just Out Pride Photo contest editor Marty Davis left the task to celebrity guest judges, including me. I was joined by Paul Fukui from Q Center, Artemis Chase, performer extraordinaire and Jeff Fisher of LogoMotives fame.
We didn’t have a tough time identifying some great shots but when it came down to placing them in order it got tougher. We ended up going with J.T. Ollett‘s Untitled as the People category and Grand Prize winner. Here’s the artist’s statement:

  2007 "People" category winner Lee Kyle's “Kajanne Pepper in Stripes” Even though it is still may and the rain continues to dampen our spirits as we head into the official beginning of summer, Memorial Day, and Pride Season, I’m starting not to be able to control my upcoming seasonal excitement.
qPDX has plans to march, of course, cover the hell out of our local festivities, and tweet all the cool stuff the whole time (my apologies if the tweets start to get messy by the end of each evening). But even better? We’re going to be doing it all again the next weekend from San Francisco!
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. QDoc will kick off the season shortly, and we’ll have some stellar review coverage this year. But you can get just ask excited as me RIGHT NOW by entering Just Out’s 2010 Amateur Pride Photo Contest. It’s bound to be an interesting competition this year with all kinds of new staff at the JO as well as…drumroll…celebrity guest judging from yours truly. (You’re calling me a local celebrity?  Work by Amos Mac Every Women’s Studies 101 class had to read that Laura Mulvey article on the cinematic “male gaze” which described voyeurism and objectification of a female by a heterosexual male viewer. And then Cindy Sherman turned the theory of the gaze on its ear with her “Untitled Film Stills” and other eclectic self-portraiture.
Now Queer Gaze opening Thursday at Fontanelle Gallery (205 SW Pine) aims to explore the gaze from woman to woman or queer to queer, as well as the way that many photographers use their own visage or that of their friends to subvert traditional expectations of portraiture.
