  Big Freedia gets the sissies bouncin'! Besides books, bikes and beer Portland, Oregon is also known for its local music. And the space between summer and fall is when we choose to put it center stage with MusicFest NW starting today and running through the 12th. There’s a smorgasboard of both local and out-of-town bands, DJs and performers and no lack of queers among them. Here’s where to find the gays amidst all the action.
Thursday the 9th sees sissy bounce New Orleans based Big Freedia self-dubbed queen diva, dick-eater, and late night creeper. The culturally queer, hot dirty south bounce has been called rap goes drag by Vanity Fair and is one of the most exciting things to happen to dance music disco. PDX could use an infusion of booty and color and I’d personally be excited to have other bounce-able bums at my back. This may be the most exciting performance of the entire fest.

  Kaj-Anne Pepper hosts the first Mrs. As much as I love you all, I can’t say I’m sad to leave town, which is currently raining and may be one of the shortest summer’s I’ve ever experienced in my many PDX years, this holiday weekend. But there are a few eclectic first and last times that are worth checking out if you are braving the local weather for that last sprint of summer good times…

TJO’s solo show :::VERTIGINOUS VESTIGES AND OTHER PROOFS THAT IM PHYSIOLOGICALLY INCAPABLE OF BEING A REALIST::: a doodle book – Tara Jane O’Neil is most known for wielding the musical axe but she’s also an avant garde visual artist. Her doodle book selections whimsically incorporate the elements of Dada and Primitivism into a contemporary comic book sketchpad. Food from Dovetail bakery and dykes making music. Oh and likely the best underground art at First Thursday…or at least the most Basquiat.

  Special appearance by DJ Beyonda Though we’ve actually gained an hour of light at the end of our sunny spring days, dusk is still the witching hour for frisky queer gatherings. Organizer and DJ Freddie Fagula is feeling the spring fever, categorizing the beginning as last week’s Bent. With a crowded, sweaty dance floor and hot homos sidling up to one another I can’t say I disagree.
He aims to keep that party vibe going with this Thursday’s Do the Dark Spring Break Edition at the Tonic (NE 31st and Sandy).
