2 Girls, 1 Podcast ep#12: Bowling for Oscars

I was really hoping Glenn Close (R) would win Best Actress for Albert Nobbs though I do love Meryl Streep (L) as Margaret Thatcher. Both portrayals seem pretty gay.

This week’s podcast dispels some rumors, discusses the Hollywood Bowl drama and digs on the Oscars.

First we address a rumor about Just Out from last week before moving on to a couple “sports” related updates. Can queer […]

Small update on the Hollywood Bowl debacle

Hollywood Bowl

Last week we delved into the situation surrounding accusations of homophobia against Hollywood Bowl. A week later it still seems to be pretty much a game of “they said, they said” but folks seem rather interested in this one, so I figured I’d give what little updates are to be had.

Firstly, a reader by the name of ‘jo’ was able to wrench even more information out of an HB Manager Heather Moeller than I was, saying,

There were no leagues on Saturday already…The Sunday PCBL League was approached and asked if they would switch from 3:00pm Sunday to either 10:00am or 6:30pm which would allow us to have as large chunk open for birthday parties and open play. The league being at 3:00 on Sunday just made it hard to book anything else.

Ongoing debate on whether a gay league was forced out of Hollywood Bowl

Members of the LGBT bowling leagues. Photo courtesy Towleroad.

Some controversy between the gay bowling league PCBL (Portland Community Bowling League) and their former home Hollywood Bowl has erupted on the interwebs this week with the league claiming they were forced out due to homophobia and HB flatly denying the accusation.

The most complete form of the accusation comes from a Towleroad reader who makes this claim:

Breaking News: Portland Wins Bid to Host Women’s Softball World Series in 2013

The 2013 ASANA Softball World Series will be held in August 2013 in Portland, Oregon.

The Rose City Softball Association, Portland’s LGBT and Allies Softball League delivered a proposal and presentation about the city’s facilities at the ASANA meeting held in San Diego over the February 18-19 weekend. ASANA is a national women’s softball association primarily allied with LGBT softball leagues around the nation. In Portland, the women’s division […]

It’s a weekend for Lovers, Lezzers doing stand up, Bears and Booty Calls

Lavender Mirror

Thursday

Lovers benefit show – I love the combination of live music and DJs to begin with but when it’s also a benefit for a community member without healthcare its a triple win. Not to mention the lineup is incredible. Lovers are probably the best Portland queer band at the moment, (their last album was our number 1 of 2010), and Anaturale is some damn good hip hop I haven’t seen around these parts in years. Brittle Bones the q folks behind the decks are also stellar. With such a diverse group how can you not check it out?

Friday

Peep Show hosted by Fannie Mae Darling – The outlandish drag persona of Fannie Mae manages to bridge that drag divide of monstrous and beautiful quite magically. So while it may be sad to lose Peep Show’s usual hosts Darling is the perfect PS insert. Apparently the theme this month is sex, but isn’t always with Fannie? (And with Peep Show for that matter?)

Settled: Gay Softball World Series Suit

The North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA) has recently settled a years-long lawsuit filed by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) on behalf of three bisexual players whose team was disqualified from the 2008 Gay Softball World series because they exceeded the maximum of two non-gay players, as defined by NAGAAA at the time. The players had to endure a public interrogation process in which they were […]

Portland State’s Pride Night

Portland State’s women’s basketball program is about to make a huge statement in support of lgbtq athletes and coaches. This Saturday, their home game against Nevada is doubling as Pride Night, an event in honor of openly gay coach Sherri Murrell.

In addition to celebrating Murrell, the event will feature several queer rights and support groups. NCAA basketball is notoriously homophobic, so PSU putting on this event is […]

Go vaginas! I mean, go ducks! I mean, what?

Oregon is bereft of the NFL, but luckily we have two big time college programs to cheer for. Oregon State and the U of O are major rivals — unfortunately for Ducks fans, it turns out that they have been basically cheering for the Beavers the whole time.

As this New York Times article explains, the vaguely O shaped hand sign that proliferates at Ducks games means vagina […]
