Outstanding Film – Wide Release
Weekend took home a good bulk of the awards/nominations including Best Picture
Sometimes I get swept up in the excitement of award shows such as the Oscars, sometimes I find them a bore. But there is something fun about making lists of the things we love. And though the Academy Awards might make you roll your eyes, like when Brokeback Mountain lost out to the retch-inducing Crash in 2006, it’s much more fun to roll your eyes at an award show that’s predicated on LGBT content. It may be better, it may be worse, but I have a feeling the ceremony (or at least the after parties) are way more fun.
These winners were announced last Monday January 16th and the winners are listed below. Go ahead and check out how they compare to our own lists of Best Gay Film and Television of 2011.
The group’s Dorian Award winners this time include two big victories for the bold gay romance Weekend (for Film of the Year as well as LGBT Film of the Year). Meryl Streep earned Film Performance of the Year for her uncanny turn as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the biopic The Iron Lady, while Michael Fassbender nabbed the We’re Wilde About You Rising Star of the Year honor for his daring performance as a sex addict in Shame. In the more unusual film categories, the comic drama 50/50, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a young man diagnosed with cancer, was named Unsung Film of the Year, and The Muppets took Campy (Intentional or Not) Film of the Year.

This week 2 Girls, 1 Podcast records from the bar which makes us even more ridiculous in our commentary, like bringing up the lack of Grindr for women (“um, lesbians invented grinding”) and the already escalating gay gang war. […]
Since Ellen’s coming out episode in 1997 it has no longer been shocking to have a gay character on TV, but portrayals of LGBT characters in the new millennium can be all over the place. These are some of our picks for the gayest shows, the best shows with gay characters, the most interesting portrayals in a show, or just a show we’d like to highlight for some other gay ass reason. […]
You may not be able to watch season 2 of Portlandia on the boob tube until tomorrow night, but you can skip ahead and catch episode 2 right now online. Hulu is only offering it one more day but it may stay up on the IFC website a bit longer. So I’ve included that version below.
And I’m not exactly sure why they episode 2 was chosen instead of episode 1, except that perhaps they are hoping that Battlestar fans will become as obsessive about them as they are about Ron Moore. It’s not a bad bet. I’m certainly excited to watch this episode, which also guest stars Jeff Goldblum and Eddie Vedder.
And hey, while you’re at it why don’t you check out a behind the scenes photo gallery shot by Carrie Brownstein.

Sam Adams with 'Portlandia' director Jonathan Krisel and Carrie Brownstein at last year's season 1 premiere
In another edition of gays thanking gays, all those gays at City Hall have helped created a video of Portland Mayor Sam Adams taking a moment to thank Portlandia for creating jobs and boosting tourism by mocking us. Don’t worry, this proves we’re in on the joke.

Queerlandia 2012 – I don’t know too much about how this party’s going to be but they’re only planning a total of 5 before the end of […]
This week’s episode of ranting by Lyska and Alley features gay penguins, male model Andrej Pejic in a bra, Rick Perry’s Brokeback ad, sci fri smackdown and more (including more making fun of Alley). Plus, a special anniversary message to my favorite aunt and uncle. You made it 30 years. […]
Fred and Carrie in a real record store for Portlandia's season 2 skit 'Wanna Come to my DJ Night?'
Everyone’s favorite TV show poking fun at our hometown, Portlandia, is gearing up for a second season (a mere 3 weeks away) on IFC and the marketing has just begun. They say the more likes they get on their Facebook page the more tidbits they’ll pre-release. Normally I’m patient enough not to care (and I’m a “fan” already anyway) but seeing as the next clip in the rotation has the nerdgasm-worthy title The Full Motherfracking Portlandia BattleStar episode I’m willing to give in to the hype.
But most of you are probably not quite the geek that I am and the internet is an impatient world, so you’ll want to see the clips already released below for Wanna Come to my DJ Night and My Dog Survived a Tsunami, as well as the season 2 preview, which are all currently making the internet rounds. Folks in my circle are especially excited about DJ Night…Did I mention we have a DJ of the Week column. I’m not kidding. But at least I don’t have my own night!
