This past weekend saw a stretch of intense partying for at least 2/3rds of your QPDX crew, so pardon us while we recover momentarily and start summing all of this weekend’s great events for you! Starting off the night on Friday was Portland’s newest lesbian dance night-CRAVE.
Crave - Monthly lesbian dance party at Crush
I had a chance to stop by on Friday and speak with some of the organizers, dancers and partiers in attendance, and if the clubgoers satisfaction is the best gauge of a party, then Crave is already a hit. Held at one of my favourite bars in Portland, Crush, Crave is a “stylish, fashionable, hip, themed dance party with lovely, sexy ladies, geared towards the 21-40 crowd who appreciate beautiful women”, according to organizer Mirage. And while the stated upper age limit of 40 is a bit high (I barely saw anybody into their 30’s), Crave delivers on the promise of themed nights, pumping dance music and enthusiastic dancers. “It’s a great party,” dancer Piper told me outside, “everyone is having fun, getting down. I love the vibe, it’s awesome”, and party attendees I spoke to echoed the same sentiments. “The music is pumpin,” my friend Byz said, ” The girls are hot, the drinks keep coming, it’s awesome.”

I’m just gonna copy in this email I got. Support SMYRC. They are awesome! As a youth, I profited greatly from a group like SMYRC, and I personally know queer and questioning youth who are current SMYRC regulars.

Come on, admit it. You’ve all done it-cruised the ads, that is, hopelessly mining the black 10pt Times New Roman on white, or even in your RSS feed viewer if you’re a technophile, searching for that elusive flash of recognition. Or maybe you just like the drama, the requests for initials, the coded messages between Frogbelly and Ratboy, the tortured twisted poetry sent out into the cold world of the intarweb, transmitted but only possibly received…or the slanderous name slinging and “your dead to me” threats, or even, maybe, the “me: brown hair, blue eyes, you: black tee, blue jeans, short hair, you looked at me for a second from the other side of Holocene, meet me for coffee?” infused jabs of wistfulness.

Whatever it is, you’ve done it. Read, that is. Skimmed. Maybe you’ve even posted your own ad? What is it about the missed connections ads in this town-everyone’s reading them, everyone’s writing them, are we too shy to talk to people up front any more? What happened to taking risks, asking someone out? Why are we resolving (or, actually, not resolving) our issues with people in public forums?

X Rated. Monthly. Queer. Sliding Scale. An institution of queer life in Portland gets a QPDX writeup.
Crowd at the two year anniversary of DQ
Dirty Queer (DQ for short), the country’s only X-Rated Queer Open Mic has been running for around two years now-and i’d never been! Bad Perry. I know. Come ‘ere darlin’, tell me off! Ok, ok. Nevermind!
But finally, finally…I managed to go last Friday and not only was I present for the readings and performances, I also got to interview host Sossity Chiricuzio and I read some of my own writing!

Not to be confused with the German-Turkish movie of the same name, this little known Australian gem is a tour de force of the chaotic place where Greek immigrant life collides with gay culture, and creates a complicated masculinity that rushes head on into nowhere.

Fabulous! Unbeknownst to me, RuPaul’s Drag Race is a pretty big deal—if you’re a Logo subscribin’ Drag Queen lovin’ homo that is- (i’m one of these things, and it doesn’t involve a TV) and I hadn’t even heard of it before. Nevertheless, I DID end up at the Red Cap Garage last Thursday until quite late to witness something I think I’ve never seen before-a Drag Pageant.
For those of you unfamiliar with RuPaul’s Drag Race, it’s a Reality TV show hosted by the legendary RuPaul herself—who is searching for the next drag superstar (Think Priscilla meets American Idol or even Top Chef and you’re almost there) Candidates are evaluated on their style, attitude, skills and overall fierceness.
