QDoc moview (P)reviews - 'Le Tigre: On Tour'

Le Tigre live at a filled stadium

Originally titled with the much preferred Le Tigre: Who Took the Bomp, the video diary for the last Le Tigre tour is a bit of self-indulgent nostalgic fluff. But it’s good nostalgic fluff. And you should all know how much I adore both of those things.

Beginning with a random home rocket kit test flight Le Tigre: On Tour takes an irreverent look at the comraderie and adventures of the team, and spends a lot of time fawning over the most masculine of the trio JD Samson. Dykes will appreciate the attention paid to this mustachioed butch dreamboat who comes across as genuine, humble and sexy, even when she’s accepting champagne from adoring fans.

Swan Island, Le Tigre DJ set tonight

I’ve known about this impending awesomeness for days, but it only occurred to me last night, as we tried to convince an east coast friend to move to Portland because of how much fun she was going miss at this show, that I realized I hadn’t let you know what a fantasically musical and dance righteous night this would be.

The night at Holocene starts off with "Portland’s answer to the tribal, experimental punk music of The Slits and The Raincoats," The New Bloods, at 9p, then moves on to Swan Island. Lead singer Brisa Gonzalez manages to commingle thrashing Siren with a throaty lusty Dietrich voice that is as smooth and soothing as it is energizing. I don’t even know how that’s possible, but it gets me on the dance floor in a sort of rock’n’roll trance that cannot be broken. If I had to be stranded on a deserted island and could only take 2 recent albums with me, Swan Island’s debut would be one of them. The other would be The Gossip’s latest, which I could also listen to over and over for the rest of my life. Check out sample videos from both of these fine bands in a post from December.

The evening ends with a Dj set by JD Samson and Johanna Fateman. From the amount of love Le Tigre generally produces combined with the beats I’ve heard hottie-dyke-mustached JD throw down this set is sure to get hoards of sweaty girls on the dance floor. I have little doubt that it will get you laid. If that ain’t worth 8 bucks, well, I just don’t know what is…

DJ of the Week — Linoleum

DJ Linoleum. Photo by Manny Reyes

Every week we introduce you to a local LGBTQ party DJ and ask them about their experiences in the scene and feature an audio mix they’ve made. If you’re interested in being featured contact alley@qpdx.com.

Today’s profile of DJ Linoleum aka Andrea K comes a day early. It’s a holiday week so why not squish  more into the front of it so we can enjoy our time off. And, while Linoleum plays at various events around town her only upcoming gig presently schedule it tomorrow night, Wednesday the 23rd at Aalto Lounge (3356 Southeast Belmont Street) as well as an appearance Superfresh Festival in February. (Plus, a new update first Thursdays at Tube Fast Weapons night starting Dec 1.

When and how did you get started DJing?

I think it was in early 2003. My roommate’s friend told me about this open turntable night that happened every week at Beulahland and was like, “You have lot’s of records! You have to do it!” So, we went down there and there was this great little community of people that simply loved to share music. Super fun and supportive. They showed me how the turntables and mixer worked and then I was hooked!

gayPod

So my gf has an iPod mini. A couple steps behind, perhaps, but perfect for our lackadaisical throw it around the car, use. Recently it began acting strangely. "It won’t stop on any songs," she complained, "It only scrolls past them." So I put it on shuffle to see if it would play any songs and indeed it would. For better or worse, however, it seemed to only want to play songs by gay artists. It’s favorite is the brazen bisexual, and dual-gendered quartet from Olympia, Gravy Train!!! but it would also occasionally play Le Tigre. So now the silver little aging devil has a potentially annoying yet wonderful quirk and we dubbed it the gayPod…Do you think we should copyright that? […]

The "ladies" are in town

Two girlie gay acts take stage this weekend.

Saturday will see post-punk riot grrl electronica Le Tigre, led by former Bikini Kill frontwoman Kathleen Hanna. The new face of coolness is also the new face of liberation and fluidity, both musically and gender-ly. Most recent release This Island chronicles New York City is a way that it both grounded and surreal. Hannas childlike voice on remake of the Pointer Sisters Im So Excited is an eerie romp into pop musics past. The dancey jangle of the 80s are also echoed on the keyboard-laden After Dark while On the Verge and Seconds remind more of Hannas 90s rock and riot roots. Still others give us the sound of the playful cheese of a gay nightclub in Nanny Nanny Boo Boo. But the message and the politics are certainly not lost, as evidenced by the anti-war New Kicks and the queer powered Viz. But the city is wrapped up in blips and beeps and lyrical reality on the title track The Island. Le Tigres latest release provides a nice sampling of time, place and genre that is refreshing. This Island may not have the energy and intensity of their first release (because although gender-bender JD Samson is not only hot, but a skilled musician, the loss of Playskool filmmaker Sadie Bening was quite a blow) but it is certainly an improvement on the largely boring beats of sophomore outing Feminist Sweepstakes. The play with naughty pretty boy Beck at the Memorial Coliseum.

Sunday sees folky favorites Indigo Girls at the Oregon Zoo. How wholesome sounding isnt it? Well, the girls of blue have their own form of rock edge and hard-hitting messagesits just acoustic. Amy Ray, lately, has been spreading her wings to rock out with the likes of the scruffy Butchies and you gotta love that smoky voice belting in chorus with these crazy punkers Lucy Stoners dont need boners I havent heard the Indigo Girls newest album but Closer to Fine is sure to be at the fingertips of every lesbian guitarist around a campfire forever more. Im also guessing that special guest Girlyman is a big ol queerbie too.

Presents for the Documentarian

Topp Twins characters Ken & Ken

Doc lovers are a special brand of film buff and while there’s plenty of good gay box sets of movies out there here’s a special subset of gifts about the “real thing.”

#1 Now out on DVD

Untouchable Girls – This year America experiences the Kiwi invasion when dyke music and comedy sensations from New Zealand, the Topp Twins, finally showed us they exist. The duo had a television show that still hasn’t come to the states but they have finally begun touring here over the past couple years, including a visit to Portland a year and a half ago. But the big news is that their documentary Untouchable Girls is finally available on DVD in the US. You can read our review from QDoc 2010 here.

JD Samson’s MEN take over humpday in PDX

Michael, JD, Ginger of MEN

To see some truly great bands you’ve got to be willing to party mid-week. And for the likes of electro-politico-indie-dance-rockers MEN it’s work any Thursday morning hangover. Headed by frontqueer JD Samson (Le Tigre), the trio are touring with their triumphant freshman album release Talk About Body, bringing it to Rotture (315 SE 3rd) tomorrow night.

Joined by local DJ hero Mr Charming, Silver Interior (featuring Jenny Hoyston of Erase Eratta), the Aussie MC Macromantics, and indie-darlings, queer or otherwise, Portland or not, Lovers it’s going to be a show of epic proportions.

As the DJ and the MC spice up the beginning, Lovers will begin the show’s upward surge to climax but eerily tugging on your heartstrings, though you may not even know why. Intertwining in a way that makes you feel both ecstatic and sad, I compared their newest album to doing drugs with your lover when I named it album of the year.

New MEN video – ‘Who Am I to Feel so Free?’

MEN's new album 'Talk About the Body'

The new video from electro-indie trio MEN is minimalistic, even simplistic, but it is awesome. Off their newly released debut album Talk About Body the video for Who Am I to Feel So Free? features frontwoman JD Samson (of Le Tigre fame) in a very calm and commanding stance atop a cliff. The climax is epically gay and I have little doubt that Body will make next year’s list of Best Queer Albums.

Gay days at MusicFest NW

Big Freedia gets the sissies bouncin'!

Besides books, bikes and beer Portland, Oregon is also known for its local music. And the space between summer and fall is when we choose to put it center stage with MusicFest NW starting today and running through the 12th. There’s a smorgasboard of both local and out-of-town bands, DJs and performers and no lack of queers among them. Here’s where to find the gays amidst all the action.

Thursday the 9th sees sissy bounce New Orleans based Big Freedia self-dubbed queen diva, dick-eater, and late night creeper. The culturally queer, hot dirty south bounce has been called rap goes drag by Vanity Fair and is one of the most exciting things to happen to dance music disco. PDX could use an infusion of booty and color and I’d personally be excited to have other bounce-able bums at my back. This may be the most exciting performance of the entire fest.

QDoc 2010 spreads queer documentary love all weekend long

Portand’s QDoc is the only queer documentary film festival in the US (and one of two in the world) held annually at the intimate Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton). That’s pretty special. But not surprising for our hometown.

It’s also a great kick-off to Pride season to reflect on our LGBT roots before we start the party. Several qPDXers got the chance to screen some of these films and will be providing reviews in the next couple days. But the folks organizing the fest have put together a pretty fabulous preview on their own:
