 Today our newly elected President made an overt statement in support of queer Americans by declaring June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. And actually he is not the first. President Clinton made a similar declaration in June of 2000 (conveniently positioned towards the end of his second term, well after enacting “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”)

(AP Photo/Paul Sakuma) In a rather odd twist to the Proposition 8 decision, the California’s Supreme Court decided to uphold the ban on gay marriage, but recognize the 18,000 marriages that took place before the law took effect. From the San Francisco Chronicle:
The 6-1 decision was issued by the same court that declared a year ago that a state law defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman violated the right to choose one’s spouse and discriminated on the basis of sexual orientation.

Oy. I am definitely still in recovery mode from my stellar weekend at Maggotfest, the annual rugby festival in Missoula, Montana. In a 72 hour period, I spent over 18 hours in a car as the gracious DD to a wild and crazy group of ruggers. The drinking started in the car on Friday and didn’t end until we got back into the car Sunday afternoon.
 rugby girls know how to get down Maggotfest, my friends, is serious business. Serious drinking, costumes, nudity, ridiculousness, and rugby. Ok, so the rugby part isn’t that serious, but it is there–there are actual referees and real teams* and at the end of every game, there is only one winner.
This was my red dress party. Unlike red dress, most of the gay folks at Maggotfest were ladies who could ruck, maul and scrum it like a rockstar. I would argue that Maggotfest was clearly where it was at. It was–in a word–epic.

Like many of you, i’m a facebook addict. I never really got into myspace as much as many did, but I really love facebook. It’s less cluttered than myspace. It’s easy to use. It’s easy to find people. All my friends are on it. Squabbles over changes in the user agreement aside, and no, I don’t like the new format either, Facebook is still a great marketing/networking tool (and a bit of a timesuck). But this here issue is something that made me pay attention. Apparently, it seems, Facebook has a rejected an ad deemed “too racy” despite the fact that the creators claim many other ads on FB are a lot racier. Is the ad being targetted for being “too gay”? Is FB turning homophobic? Will this be the next AmazonFail?

Angela Zapata’s brother makes a tearful and emotionally moving statement to the press after the sentencing of Allen Andrade, who was convicted yesterday of first-gree murder and a hate crime.

But today the AP reports that jurors have reached a verdict, and that verdict is first-degree murder according to a live blog from Denver Westword Blogs.
The verdicts: Guilty of first-degree murder. Guilty of a bias-motivated crime. Guilty of motor vehicle theft. Guilty of identity theft.

 Angie Zapata The striking transwoman, Angela Zapata, was only 18 years old when Allen Andrade bludgeoned her to death with a fire extinguisher. The bias-motivated nature of this horrific crime could add 3 years to Andrade’s sentance when his trial begins this coming Tuesday.
