Patty Schemel's 'Hit so Hard' screens Thursday
This 5th edition of Siren Nation, a celebration of women in music, art, and film and takes over many venues throughout this weekend. They’ve had some great music acts over the years, including a Team Dresch reunion that was not to be missed. This year the fun begins with an epic looking art show at the Albina Press opening Thursday. It features over 40 local artists including the fabulous Alicia Rose and occasional qPDX photo contributor Anna Campbell. Tunes from DJ Safi will set the stage for the weekend at this all ages event.
This year also has a much more robust film portion in comparison to former years, kicking off with Hit So Hard: The Life and Near Death of Patty Schemel. It’s the perfect combo to exemplify the fest encompassing both music and film. When it premiered in Portland at QDOC last June we not only reviewed the film but interviewed the former Hole drummer. So go ahead and read or even listen to audio of Patty Schemel talking Hit So Hard to get excited because Schemel herself, along with producer Christina Soletti will be live and in person to for a special Q&A after the Thursday screening. And visit the SN site for previews and trailers of the rest of the incredible lineup including animation from local Laika studios and several films premiering in PDX for the first time.

Tara Jane O'Neil performs Friday at the Someday Lounge
Portland is no stranger to alternative and women-centric music. But for a while little sister Olympia seemed to have the best fests, Homo-a-gogo, Ladyfest, Yo-Yo. All of those have evolved beyond the PacNW but Portland has taken on its own women’s festival. Now in it’s 4th year Siren Nation, is no longer a fledgling fest but the real deal.
Music is a big part of Siren Nation, taking up Nov 5th and 6th Friday and Saturday nights at Someday Lounge (125 NW 5th) with folks like sultry folkstress Erin McKeown, experimental multi-instrumentalist Tara Jane O’Neil and bhangra bright spot DJ Angiali.
But it’s actually visual art that kicks off the festival, as well as representing a true northwest flavor, with Thursday Nov 4th’s “Sometimes a Great Notion” group art show.

Dolly still looks fabu in her 60s...
Originally printed in Just Out:
Dolly Parton may not be an out queer herself (though, believe me, the rumors swirl like an overactive hot tub about Parton and longtime pal Judy Ogle), but she’s always been a champion of gay, lesbian, bi and trans causes. In a musical genre so often dominated by gun-toting good ole boys, the buxom beauty is fearless; she’s even received hate mail and threats for her status as a gay icon. What better way to honor her than to recruit some of Portland’s finest musicians while raising money for a diverse celebration of women in music, Siren Nation. The Dolly Parton Hoot Night cover extravaganza takes place at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) Saturday, June 6.

It’s getting busy, folks. I know this by the fact that I am expected at 5 different events this Friday! Two are private events, but Pride is definitely heating up. We here at QPDX.com are going to try and cover as much as we can…so before you say “Hey! You didn’t mention/cover/go to/take photos of XYZ” remember there is only two of us (Adina is sadly out of town…).
