‘Viva Voce Virus’ at the Siren Nation Festival

‘The Viva Voce Virus’…you are infected…

This year’s 2nd annual Siren Nation Women’s Music and Arts Festival is already underway with a series of films showing at the Hollywood Theater (4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd) before the official kickoff on Thursday. But the crowning jewel in SI’s new filmic cap will be local Kathleen Bryson’s Viva Voce Virus, which premieres at tomorrow at 7pm.

Virus follows two stories, one a faux 70s B-movie gay utopia, the other Ronnie, a bisexual actress in London filming a lesbian vampire movie. Through a series of strange events, the obliquely closeted Ronnie discovers a mysterious cover-up from Hollywood’s past and the blue drugged virus that was partially to blame. A disease spread by the heterosexual screen kiss, a disease that makes screen actors shut up about their same-sex love affairs while trumpeting their heterosexual romances, Viva Voce continues to infect even the most “queer-friendly” contemporary productions.

The wedding

While Bryson is a master at queering the queer and keeping the viewer aware of the incredibly blurry lines between reality, gossip and fantasy this can make the movie overly confusing at times. And while this intense feeling of being disconcerted does resonate with the uncomfortably gay/not gay questions of Viva Voce Virus, I struggled to understand basic elements of what was going on, even if I was laughing at the jokes in all the right places.

What is a clearer success in Bryson’s work is the ambiance. Set, costumes and color combine to create scenes that are both evocative and comical, as well as much clearer than the shifting plot. Red is evil, pink is gay, and blue is the color of the virus covered universe. The simple plot device of making scenes of the past black and white works just as intended as Bryson cameos in busty Hollywood lesbian mad scientist flashbacks. And as long as you can stomach a sentence as robust and brazenly adjective-driven as that, you will certainly enjoy this campy but critically engaging satire that oh-so-eloquently skewers not just the Hollywood of yesteryear, but the continual doublespeak of Hollywood’s present.

I know many movies, plays, etc. about bisexual. Not sure if the director will request the real bisexual for the role, or the straight? If the straight, how can they know the life of bisexual? And after playing the bisexual role, will they become bisexual or bicurious? I know many bicurious and real bisexual on **BiLoves dotcom**. If you come here frequently, you may find what you are looking easily and quickly.
